Bontragers and Bowers 4: Dumbass Love for the Romantic Lost Cause

Allison reviewed Debi Pearl’s idiotic brain book on the Bontrager blog. The review is just as awful as you would expect from a Pearl humper.

I just stumbled across  Moo! Jesus Dairy on the interwebs, part of the Everything Jesus Ranch near Seguin, TX.  I AM NOT MAKING THIS UP!  They are shut down right now, but they do sell raw milk.

Raw milk dairies are legal in Texas but tightly regulated, including regular testing.  The milk and butter can be sold at the dairy, can be delivered to customers by the dairy, or be sold by the dairy at farmers markets.

There's another Texas dairy, Mill-King Market and Creamery, that sells minimally pasteurized, non homogenized milk through grocery stores.  Their cream-on-top is simply divine.  However, it's the last thing that goes in my cart before checkout, and it's iced on the way home.  It needs to be kept chilled; it will go bad faster than regular milk.  I don't get it often, but it's available in our area at Whole Foods and at my local food co-op.  They also sell raw milk at the dairy and at a farmer's market.

I started to read it but then I saw it was by Debi Pearl and closed the window.

Then I wondered - what is Debi's background education that she is writing books about using your brain? When I answered myself, I weeped for fundies who fall for all this shit. Whether from the abusive Pearls or the extreme sheltering Maxwells - what makes fundies jump all in for other fundie's "writings"? There is a lot of fundie talk about discernment - but I don't think any of them know how to use it.

While I agree with you on the post, I reread it twice and it doesn't say it was written by Allison. But knowing me it is right there in front of me in the first paragraph and I am just missing her name.

I read the whole thing. The review is pretty much just accompanied with photos of the kids growing up. The part that upset me the most is when they talked about raising children with autism and special needs. Debi Pearl, most likely, gave advice saying that raising a child with autism and special needs is a one size fits all situation when it's not. I just hope that the Bontragers and other fundies who read this book understand that.

But, then again Mrs. Bontrager did a post on how shy children are rude. So, dealing with a nonverbal child who has a disability they may not be as understandable, especially if they are taking advice from the Pearl family.

I read it again a couple of times and I think you are right. I think Becky wrote it. I just assumed it was Allison since she seems to post on the family blog the most.

I have a feeling Becky wrote it after reading. Allison primarily writes on her own blog right now. Call me crazy, but I am strangely rooting for Allison. She seems to have an independent life for a fundie maiden.

She’s more independent than a lot of fundie girls her age. However she’s still so completely entrenched in the fundie beliefs and it’s causing so many issues for her. Her self worth seems to be at least partly tied in with having a godly significant other. I’m glad she works and has interests. But I honestly think she would give it all up in a split second to get married and have kids.

She would.

Evidence of her entrenchment is her brother worship.

She wasn't raised with a healthy view of life, of those with a penis, of her individual place in the world.

She exists to serve her brothers/family, and wax poetic about being single but wanting to be married & fulfill her destiny.

She definitely tries too hard to make her single life something she is happy about.

Same here, that is why I am rooting for her. I can see her being completely happy if she just left fundiedom behind. I can see her being married with kids and having a successful career at the same time. However, that is not allowed in fundiedom. So, I hope that she becomes a trail blazer for being in that sense. Sadly, I don't think that will happen. Once she gets married any ounce of independence she has or had will be gone in the blink of an eye. I kind of wonder if that is why Allison has announced a courtship or engagement yet. She is just happy being independent and knows that if she were to marry she'd have to give it up.

I don’t think she’s happy being single. I think it’s most apparent when she’s constantly talking about being happy to be single. It seems hollow to me. It’s also apparent when she places her brothers in the role of boyfriend. My biggest worry is that she will marry the first guy that proposes because she wants to get married so badly. And not because she is positive he is right for her.

Ok who is going to take one for the team and listen to this? I’m imagining it being pretty awful and I just can’t stomach it.

Up until 15:00 or so, I agree with most of what he says even though he gets some figures wrong. I agree that the media has interest in sensationalizing death for more viewership. 24/7 doomsday news is their bread and butter - I live in a hurricane state, every year they serve us the same shit. The flu kills around 35,000 people each year (not 56,000 as he claims), but it's still important to remember. There are a lot more cases of COVID than we think because a majority of carriers have mild symptoms (though I doubt his 95% claim). The good news is that the death rate from the virus is likely lower than reported, the bad news (which he fails to mention) is that it's spreading faster than we think because people don't know they're sick. And this is precisely why we need a full lockdown!!

Which bring us to the second part of his argument in which I disagree with everything. He thinks everyone should go back to business as usual except the immunocompromised. Trump has the right idea to lift the lockdown but is being ill-advised by scientists. Millions will die from the related economic crisis. And creating panic is a massive plot from the liberal elites to step in and gain worldwide control to implement socialist programs (I still don't see how healthcare for all is an evil plot, and who would gain from it).

Anyway, nothing surprising here... A far-right selfish prick with concern only for his own freedom and not an ounce of community solidarity.

And the Bontragers agree completely. Along with many other fundies I’m sure. They are also ignorant, selfish, and short sighted.

Thanks for taking one for the team, @usedbicycle.  Curtis Bowers and family have a shiny happy surface, but are actually scary, conspiracy loving, gun humping, penis worshiping, doomsday preppers. And I don't know for sure, but I get more than a whiff of xenophobia, racism--maybe anti-semitism--from them too.

And lets not forget that Curtis uprooted his whole family--yet again--and moved them from Iowa (leaving two married daughters behind) to Alabama, allegedly to deal with his chronic LUNG problems.

I bet if mama had lung problems, she would have to just suck it up.

I feel that as well. I just meant for now, she wants to remain single and in a few years gets married. But, yeah I hope she doesn't propose to the first guy. However, I think Chelsy getting married and moving all the way to Kansas has gotten to her.

Call me crazy, but I don't think that is Allison's intention by posting about her brothers that way. One of my coworkers has a brother whom she is close with and he sends her flowers on her birthday and on days when she knows she's has been having a rough week or just to surprise her. The two of them live close to each other. So, I just wonder if the boyfriend void being filled by the brothers is just an unintentional thing.

The boyfriend void being filled by the brothers is something the parents push. It's not just the Bontragers, it's other fundies as well. Your siblings are to be your best and only friends right up until the time you marry, when of course your spouse will become your best friend. This way, children are kept safe from the malign influence of other children. Alison and her brothers is a successful manifestation of this.

Seems like a really risky blurring of roles for kids without romantic/sexual outlets or normal behavior models.

Oh man, @HerNameIsBuffy, I hadn't even thought of that. I'd gotten all the obvious squicky implications about emotional incest and inappropriate behaviour... but the actual risk a la Josh Duggar hadn't occurred to me.

This is such a dangerous and destructive cult, in so many ways.

Oh it’s occured to me a lot. I’m not saying if any of the families on FJ have committed any incest. I just think that blurring lines and isolating your kids means that incest is probably more likely.

Just to be clear I was speaking about the danger in a general sense, not particularly about the Bontrangers (or any other family.)

Fundies are experts at blurring roles.

The whole "daddy keeps her heart" BS is the epitome of line crossing/gross/creating lasting damage crap fundies do.

Pledging your "purity" to daddy til he gives it to some boy who answers all the questions right and jumps through all the hoops. Teaching the girls they belong to daddy until daddy literally gives them to a boy who will now be their life & soul & headship.

For a movement that obsesses over purity and no sex  before marriage - they are, in fact, completely and utterly obsessed with sex.

On another Bontrager tangent, is anyone else as surprised as I am that Carson and Lina haven't announced another pregnancy yet?

Definitely! Although it’s possible they are expecting and not announcing yet. I’m thinking they will announce soon. They are the quietest couples out of the married Bontragers. Therefore I think it’s possible they won’t publicly announce until Lina is quite far along.

I've thought about although it has more to do with having read Flowers in the Attic that book can kind of skew things.  Sometimes its hard not to hear Fundies talking about going on dates with their brothers and the weirdly close pictures some of them do and think about that book. Its not just Fundies there's been other things scenes from TV shows, books and movies that have made me think of that book. Almost always accidentally but I'm always happy when I'm not the only one asking if a particular scene seemed a little too Flowers in the Attic. Plus there's a lot of religious fanatics in those books.
