Jana 9: So, What is Jana (and her Instagram) Being Primed For and Why?

Just think of all those chances to work on her photoshop skills! I hope to see photos of the family with showgirls wearing extravagant headpieces but otherwise covered neck to knees. The accompanying post can be vague preachy lies about successful conversions. C'mon Jana, show us what you got!

My husband and I go to Vegas roughly every two years. While there are plenty of family-friendly things to do, they aren't going to be able to avoid seeing a ton of "Nike" things.

Is it worse than some other similar in size cities in the US? I’m just curious because the Duggars seem to travel a lot. And there’s basically Nike stuff everywhere.

I'm Canadian, so the only cities I've spent much time in are Vegas and Boston. There wasn't much Nike in Boston in November. Vegas has showgirls everywhere and cars with ads for strip clubs and guys handing out discount cards for sex workers.  I would say Vegas is a lot more Nike than other places, but I can't be 100% sure.

It has come to my attention that they are business cards, not discount cards. Still, they're usually everywhere, including all over the ground.

Oh Jana, SODRT strikes again.

John Wesley was the pastor in England whose heart was strangely warmed who was the founder of the Methodist Church. John Wesley Powell was the guy who led the expedition down the Colorado River. As I recall, he lost an arm in the Civil War. There's a really interesting book called Down the Great Unknown that talks about the Powell expedition. And to echo what people said above, Powell didn't discover anything that wasn't already there and hadn't already been visited by others.

Apparently John Wesley Powell was the first person sponsored by the government to traverse the Grand Canyon via river. So he was (technically) the first of something in regards to the Grand Canyon and exploring but not the way Jana seems to think.

For crying out loud Jana, use Wikipedia once in awhile! Despite its reputation it can be reliable at times. Or just Google ‘Grand Canyon History’ the National Park Service website has a very informative and comprehension description of the Canyon’s history.

ETA: Just did a little research. I now understand why Jana said what she said - the monument to honor Powell at the Grand Canyon is very misleading:

(In summary: the monument gives Powell credit of being the first explorer).

So in other news Jana is super racist

From Jana's text: 4. Major John Wesley was the first person to explore the Grand Canyon in 1869 by the way of the Colorado River.

From wikipedia's Grand Canyon entry: For thousands of years, the area has been continuously inhabited by Native Americans, who built settlements within the canyon and its many caves. The Pueblo people considered the Grand Canyon a holy site, and made pilgrimages to it.[10] The first European known to have viewed the Grand Canyon was García López de Cárdenas from Spain, who arrived in 1540.[11]

So I guess both Native Americans and Hispanics aren't considered people?  I'm descended from Natives and Hispanics who lived in Arizona and New Mexico for a long time before Anglos came.  Jana can fuck right off with that revisionist history.

It's a product of a very Eurocentric way of studying history. Like saying Christopher Columbus "discovered" the Americas.

I'm guessing Duggar history books do not delve into the recent historiography and examinations of colonialism from alternate perspectives.

Yeah, I get that.  I'm just incredulous that she could think the 2000 people she mentions living in the canyon (Native Americans) only moved in after some white guy "explored" it.  But I suppose I shouldn't be.

And that sign is super misleading.  I honestly can't believe that's there.

Looks like Jana went with Josh and Anna and the M5 to Vegas while JimBob and Michelle, JD and Abbie and Jackson to Josie went to Phoenix. They were altogether as a group at the Grand Canyon yesterday.

I thought maybe the group was headed to CA to see Jinger, but Jinger is currently in TX. Seems like poor planning and a missed opportunity for a family visit, but I only know and operate on regular sized family logic.

OK I rarely follow the Duggars so I don't know their racial views in detail, but my read on this was that she (and the sign) was referring to who lives inside the park boundaries, rather than referring to the native people in/of the region.  In other words, the 2000 is referring to National Park Service employees.  One of the commenters seems to validate this interpretation.

@SassyPants - Jessa had posted a promo for the ALERT family camp in big sandy. I just checked and it's october 12-18. So maybe the little kids and JB&M are headed back over to texas for that? It'd be a lot of driving to go back home and then go to TX if they are attending the camp, but it also doesn't take a week to get from vegas to big sandy. Who knows.

I'll admit I'm a bit curious about whom is travelling with who. Laura wore pants when she and Jana were at the petrified forest, so I doubt they'd met up with the parents at that point. And both Laura and Jana seem to have been at a wedding in TX and then stopped by magnolia market again in OK last week.

Jana really hasn't been home much the last several weeks. I feel like anyone who was making an argument that Jana was intentionally staying home to protect the little kids needs to give up on that already. Jana is living the life she wants.

I thought Jinger was in the group Grand Canyon photo, but it might have been one of her sisters looking more like her than usual.

I can. Putting up a plaque, a statue, a commemorative monument, etc. is a highly biased choice in itself. Even if it is not done consciously, it is a message meant to be seen and portrays the views of those who erected the monument at the moment they did.

Even an historian, in what he chooses to study makes a biased choice (but I won't go into the dephts of why it is not always a bad thing, because professional and good historians are trained to recognized their own biase).

It was my first thought when I saw her post. Exactly that. I suspected Jana probably read it somewhere and just copied what she saw. I mean... this girl probably has no idea what critical thinking is. Heck, even looking up Wiki (which I agree can be an okay source if the article is well documented); this implies that she would have to research at least one or two outward sources to confirm something. Seems pretty normal for us, but I doubt it crossed Jana's mind. Something is put on a sign, it must be true.

I agree with you that she's not staying for the kids.  It's a stretch to say that she's living the life she wants.  I've been harping on this a lot lately, Jana only has the illusion of choice.  If she were living the life she wanted, she might have; gone to college, started a career, lived on her own or with a roommate, and still be able to travel and grow a succulent garden.  She has not been given the freedom of choice to say she's living the life she wants. Her options were, and still are, very narrow.  She seems to have figured out coping mechanisms to adapt and mold her life into one that she might enjoy.

@Charliemae, at this point for Jana, I disagree. She certainly had limited choices growing up. But she’s nearly 30. She’s making the choices now. Sure, it would be difficult to decide to move out and go to school or get a traditional job, but she could do those things. She has Family (if not friends) outside the strict religion. She is not kept under lock and key. She has many options to support herself.

Just because it would be hard to strike out and potentially lose her family connections, doesn’t mean it’s not an option. And she has had enough exposure to the world and freedom the past few years that she could have questioned things.

Jana is old enough and with the potential for financial independence now for me to say that she is actively choosing this life. As a child she had no choice.

About the Duggar trip to Vegas...

I went there a few years ago and wanted to share some things:

  •  IIRC, if you stay inside the resort area, I think there might be some rules about handing out sex worker/escort cards and things of that nature.
  •  the people who hand out the cards make a loud flicking noise with them so they grab your attention.
  • During busier times, the people who have been handed those cards often just drop them on the sidewalks/street corners, so their whole nike!/look down!! routine probably didn't go too well.
  •  Secular music is played throughout the city.
  •  Lots of alcohol. Everywhere.
  •  Gambling is also everywhere.
  •  Trucks will drive by with big pictures of show girls advertised on them.

In other words, I think it is possible for a trip to Vegas to be secularly family-friendly, but this is the last place I would have ever thought a fundie family would visit.

If I were your mother, I would have gone by Grace also. Must say that although we have an Aunt Ethel and an Aunt Edna, those are two names that eluded the tradition LOL.

She was my grandma, but yes, Grace is a nicer choice, for sure! She almost called my aunt Gertrude (after her mother, my great-grandmother) but got talked out of it because my aunt was born in 1948 and Gertrude sounded "too German." She dodged a bullet there!

Jana posing in front of the Brady bunch house is ridiculous because she was never allowed to watch a show like that growing up. They are trying so hard to look mainstream.

I wonder if all of these pix of Jana in front of "normal" landmarks is a ruse to get her photo out there for prospective mates. ?Instagram post dating site??
