Lori Alexander 66: An Assortment of Cheap Whines

Recommended Posts

I liked some of the stand alone non-fiction stuff Netflix has done.  The Brene Brown special on courage was nice.  I also enjoy the documentaries/docuseries from "The Innocent Man" to "Behind the Curve" about flat-earthers.

My mom is hooked on the Casketeers - which is a reality series about a Maori funeral home.

And the 2rd season of Designated survivor is on Netflix on June 7. . .

On today's post, thank you, DeeAnn, for telling me about the roll of women (like cinnamon or crescent?).  And Flicka, yesterday, thank you for warning me against playing musical beds with many men every month.  Deanna, DeAnn, Flicka and Lori make a good miserable, old hags quartet.

Quite a group. Frankly, right now Flicka is a 100+ on my annoyance scale.   She says this today: "The main reason women are opting for careers is because she is jealous of the attention a career gets for men. Many men are honored world-wide. Many men are applauded for what they do. The women are not seeing how the men have to push himself until he rests in the grave, to provide for their wives, children and the home they share. Women do not hear the cursing and rejection men suffer almost everyday. They do not see the men desperately striving to keep from getting fired or losing his position."

Yep, Flicka. You nailed it. The MAIN reason I work is to get attention.  Food, clothing, a roof over my head and health care insurance are just fringe benefits.     I especially *loved* her soft-porn story the other day of riding a motorcycle or dirt bike of some sort into the woods with her late husband and getting it on outside.  :eyewash:

Yes flicka, I started working at 16 to be like men. I didn’t need the money so I just tore up the checks. *eye roll* I actually started working so I could pay my way, gas, cell phone, car insurance, and clothes. My mom was working two jobs because my dad wasn’t able to work.

The post was about women not being able instruct in the church. If women can be rabbis, they practice OT law, then women should be able to be pastors.

Yes, indeed, Flicka—I spent nearly fifty years of my life clawing my way up to the world-renowned prestige and dazzling power of being a cube dweller for a public utility company. I did it by stepping over the prostrate bodies of scores of men who had worked themselves to death putting in grueling forty-hour weeks (with full medical benefits and as many as six weeks of paid vacation time) and laughing aloud at their futile sacrifices.

I have been looking at that specific passage in 1 Timothy for some time (thanks Lori). It is important to try to understand it in its original context. It is also important that the cultural context does not negate the application.

Dressing modestly is important because church services aren't fashion shows. Also, supposedly, extravagant dress was associated with prostitution. There are other things regarding the goddess Diana and how women were superior to men.

"Learn quietly with all submissiveness"- Think about being in school. Students listened while the teacher taught. They were not rowdy. It has nothing to do with shutting your mouth, it is about having the spirit of a student. Women did not have theological education back then. Paul wanted women to learn.

"I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man...For Adam was formed first then Eve."- There are many ways to look at this. I think, and what would likely make sense, is that it has to do with the relationship between the husband and the wife. Many versions, including the KJV, use the word "usurp" which means to take by force. Is someone that takes power by force modest or self-controlled. If she is arrogant at the pulpit, it is wrong. Women shouldn't be at the pulpit because they can, they should be called to serve God, not to impress men.

An evangelist that I receive daily devotionals shares this view. I believe that there needs to be accountability to make sure everyone is properly educated. Every person in church leadership needs to be above reproach. Not every man nor every woman is fit to be in a church leadership position. As a whole, 1 Timothy was about addressing false doctrines and making sure the church in Ephesus was upstanding.

Did she really say musical beds? If the hags don't want us doing that, maybe they shouldn't make it sound like so much fun.

Soooo men are better suited for street preaching because they have a booming voice? That's assuming preaching is more effective because of being loud. Most people just find it annoying TBH. True street preaching to me is men and women being out on the streets and demonstrating love and kindness to others. Actions speak louder than words. Of course that would involve getting dirty and actually relating with others.

The problem these guys have is they assume the church is just a building. It's not and the Pentecost is a good example of it not being about the building but the gathering of believers. Lori essentially holds church. She is the main pastor. She had her deaconesses (her page admin). She preaches her sermons and gatherings offerings through comments and people buying her book. However, not only is she the pastor but she is their god as well.

I'm late to this thread.

I was married almost 11 years ago, so before Lori's amazing literary contribution, but I did receive this as a gift:

https://www.amazon.com/Excellent-Wife-Biblical-Perspective/dp/1885904088

I wish I'd thought to burn it....I think it just got tossed in the trash.

Along with Babywise that someone gave me as a shower gift.

No, these people are no longer in my life.

@feministxtian, I just want to say that you have often inspired me here to live authentically and to figure out who I wanted to really be. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

“Preach the Gospel at all times. When necessary, use words.”—St. Francis of Assisi.
This quote by St Francis is just beautiful and inspiring. Imagine what it would be like if people like Lori would shut up for a minute and live their lives like true Christians ...?

I imagine it would be painful and unpleasant. They'd have to act like they give a damn about others.

@feministxtian, I’m reading “How Good Do We Have To Be” by Rabbi Harold Kushner (author of “When Bad Things Happen to Good People”). This wonderful little book talks about forgiveness—of both others and ourselves.  It reassures us of God’s love, reminding us that although, as fallible humans, we do sometimes fall short, God is confident that we can do better.

Here are some non-British shows Mr Dress and I like:  Sneaky Pete, Bosch, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Power (on Starz -- extremely gritty with violence, but the acting is amazing), Magic City (If you can find it, from 2-3 years ago)

For British check out:  Endeavor, Inspector Lewis, Midsomer Murders (20+ seasons!) , Traitors, Grantchester, The Bodyguard,  Taboo (on Hulu - Tom Hardy in 1814, season 1 came out a year or so ago, season 2 maybe early next year), Penny Dreadful (HBO)

Seconding how great Happy Valley, River, Luther, Father Brown, and Ripper Street are.

For fans of telenovellas -- Velvet (Netflicks). The lives and loves in a fancy Madrid department store in the late 1950s. Clothes are to die for.  Series is in Spanish, but with excellent subtitles.

Thank goodness I was a career woman because it enabled me to escape my abusive marriage.  If I hadn't been earning a good paycheck on my own I would have been stuck in a miserable situation. So, Flicka, I am damn happy that I could take care of MYSELF when I hit one of those "deep pits in the road."  I am so tired of the judgmental crap.

I can highly recommend the tv show "Charite", wich wikipedia tells me is available on netflix US. It's a german show about the famous Charite hospital in Berlin. It mixes fictional characters with real one. Season one starts in 1889 and has famous physicians like Robert Koch, Rudolph Virchow, Emil von Behring, Paul Ehrlich, Kitasato Shibasaburo and Arthur Conan Doyle. Season two starts in 1943 and has famous surgeon Ferdinand Sauerbruch and his wife Margot Sauerbruch, Adolphe Jung, psychatrist Max de Crinis and the spy for the allied forces Fritz Kolbe.

Today Lori says in her blog post 'I had a miscarriage with our first baby.'  Has she ever mentioned that before?  Maybe I missed something (very possible), but I don't think I've seen that bit of information before now.

DI found a new one recently called Forever, which is on Amazon. It has Maya Rudolph and Fred Armisen as a couple who die and go to the other side, where life is pretty boring. Its funny, but it’s thus far been very “clean” humor. For some reason I can’t do really dirty stuff when I don’t feel well. Maybe is age setting in, as well. ?

It's in her book, but she never talks about it much from what I can tell.   sorry the pic is sideways.. Not sure how to fix that!
