Courtney Rogers wrote an article (update: Pregnant w/ the 12th C Kid!)

Unfortunately, I doubt that the boy clothing clean-out has anything to do with her family size plans. It's just a practical expedient in a household that is short on room and stuffed to the gills with active kids.

It doesn't make a lot of sense to hang on to heavily gendered or season-specific baby clothing for long, even if you are the Babytron 3000. The longer she stores it, the less the consignment shops are likely to give her for it. Stretchy knits (even name-brand) are what 99% of kids clothes are now, and they don't last long. Especially if the clothing spends alternate years in an uninsulated shed in New Mexico.

Even someone like Courtney would struggle to reuse a lot of baby outerwear; her babies are pretty evenly spread throughout the calendar year, and NM has distinct seasons. A garment worn by one child in August probably wouldn't be suitable for a younger sibling who could be at a different age/size/developmental stage in August the following year. And that's not taking into account style preferences for sons and daughters, especially in a household where the girls are virtually always in dresses and leggings. Though to Courtney's credit, the boys seem to get a lot of gender-neutral, and brightly colored/patterned stuff that isn't heavily boy-coded.

I, personally, prefer thrift stores to big box stores because I'm trying my damndest to live a lifestyle more inline with non-consumerism, both out of interest for my personal finances; gross, gross uber-capitalism; the state of the planet; and the issues created by the exportation of second-hand clothes from the United States to other countries. I say this as an imperfect environmentalist who has a long way to go, but I'm trying to hit that "reduce" and "reuse" part of the old mantra, too. Also, sometimes I find really good deals on more expensive merchandise that I can't get at a big box store. But I think it's also important to pick the option that's most convenient and sustainable given one's lifestyle, too. I have time to mess around with thrift stores, whereas someone with many children does not--it's certainly not a one-size-fits-all solution.

On to the article. I recently learned the word "choad" as it pertains to people. As such, this quote makes me inclined to use it to describe Courtney's husband:

Quote

I do remember my husband suggesting having 10 because his mother had 10. I scoffed and said I was ‘too old.’

Maybe it's just me, but if a man came in saying "do this because my mother did it," my skin would crawl. Hell, it'd bother me if it was about how to flip eggs or drive, let alone anything to do with reproduction. Stick with "we both had big families and loved growing up that way" next time.

Quote

Thankfully, my body handles pregnancy well, and believe it or not, I still get thrilled with each positive test.

This is not at all how I remember this story going down.

Quote

having to book more than one hotel room

What an indescribable challenge to have to say "we need two rooms" instead of "we need one room."

Quote

Once when I was out with two of my girls, someone asked if I was going to try for a boy. I had to break the news to her I already had six boys.

Genuinely hilarious and I wish I could have seen that person's face.

Courtney loves rainbow anything. So her children (both boy and girl) wear rainbow stuff often. Or even semi rainbow stuff (brightly colored but not exact rain bow). Her babies do have gender neutral rainbow stuff so I bet she kept that clothing and got rid of some of the more gendered stuff. And you guys are right. I think she did say the shed isn’t great for storing clothing for long periods due to the weather.

The Goodwill as dumping ground for Target is annoying. I have that issue with the one closest to me. So, yeah, it's not in rotation.

I like a thrift just fine, but I need to be looking at something that is uniquely not elsewhere at the same price. It is somewhat defeatist otherwise.

Having the luxury of time is a big part of it, for me. For example, if I know a certain pair of black flats is on its deathbed, but I have a few weeks to shop around and wait for something to appear, then I'll thrift it. But if I need a pair of black flats for a wedding in two days because the sole just popped off the old ones, then it's off to the mall I go. I try my best to plan and have a mental list of stuff I'm generally looking for, but sometimes shit just happens and you need a replacement tout de suite.

My feet are enormous so I have a hard time finding shoes I like in both regular stores and thrift stores. I’ll usually just order them online and hope they fit well. I’m a size 11. Which you wouldn’t think is that extraordinary. But for some reason I find a million 7s, 8s, and 9s in the shoe section but only a few 11s. So it’s slim Pickens.

She probably didn’t write that for Lovewhatmatters.  They troll the internet looking for Facebook posts and blogs and copy/rewrite them.  I had a FB post go viral two years ago and Lovewhatmatters picked it up.  They didn’t even notify me; someone else told me it was now on their website and FB page.

Courtney might not even realize it’s up there.

She and I married the same year IIRC.  I have three kids. I can’t imagine having 8 or 9 or whatever she’s up to now.

So I just discovered this woman and I didn’t know where else to post about her. She’s basically Courtney 2.0 but somehow even worse because she’s only 30. I don’t know how these people stay sane tbh!

And of course Courtney follows her

I almost exclusively buy my little kids' clothing at thrift stores or last-day-major-discount weekend big consignment sales (Just Between Friends and other things ike that) or garage sales, because I don't trust new cheap clothing, and would rather get cheap clothing that I know has been laundered/worn hopefully many times.  Also my eldest had major sensory issues with tags or itchy stuff, and getting worn-in and maybe even tags already ripped out for someone else's sensory kid was a major bonus.

Also, if you store clothing that has been laundered in really good opaque roughneck storage containers, you might be surprised at how well they keep.  I came across a treasure trove of clothing that had been accidentally moved to our really gross falling apart shed that we finally got rid of, and it was pristine after 10 years (and we found it just as my surprise #4 was getting to that size too!)  This was despite a few incidents of extreme weather plus a moldy floor and a roof crush from a fallen tree branch (and subsequent water issue inside the shed).

It looks like she had surgery this year when #10 was a month old. Her gall bladder had released stones that lodged into her pancreas and had pancreatitis. She had her gallbladder removed and those lodged stones causing problems. I bet she will still announce another pregnancy soon though...

Landon's middle name is Alan, but those birthdays look right. She makes it very clear with all of those table decorations she sets up for every birthday. Also, she had a miscarriage between #8 and #9 (that would have been another Irish twin) and another one very recently. She had a couple of stints of birth control/NFP earlier in her marriage, too. That lady is fertile, and she's trying for more. I should do a calculation on how many she could have.

At least she actually has a bachelor's in education from a secular college.

Also stalked "farmschool_mama." She is following the old Erika Shupe (sp?) method of doing three-tiered bunk beds.

They use the weird Jesus co-op Christian insurance.

She seems to also be doing the homeschool method where every child, no matter the age, does the same activity. There is some element that makes it more challenging for the 10 year old and less for the 4 year old. I guess this works with the current grade levels, but probably not sustainable (to what you or I would expect) into teenage years.

TBH she seems really suited to the job -- very organized, as a teacher, it seems to me that she "thinks like a teacher," finds time to read (actually quality non-religious novels), likes doing outdoor activities, etc.

I always really respect the women that can pull this off (assuming the kids are actually learning appropriate and challenging stuff) BUT it isn't a prescription for every woman!! Very rare, actually!

Looks like the older kids will soon be up to "buddy" age right around the time when she might have her Me-chelle "laundry room moment."

They're clearly religious, but somehow Mom still seems involved. A lot of what I saw surprised me. They use actual science equipment like a microscope and celebrate St. Patrick's Day - so not anti-catholic. They are also not strict on modesty or absolute gender roles.

There are plenty of concerns like all the kids reading the same book. Sure, differentiation is possible, but based on the book, it was inappropriate for the older kids.

I think they may also do some homeschool co-op. That is becoming so popular amongst the fundie homeschoolers.

I didn't know that. But, I first read it because she linked to it. So, in her case, she knows.

Her spacing, not including the periods where she's said she used BC and NFP, and not counting her marriage-to-#1 spacing because she was pregnant when she got married, is 403.9 days. If she's fertile until 40, she'll make it to 19 kids.

She sounds a little more together than most of the fundy families/mom's we follow.  It sounds like they are more so-called "normal" than many.  But I do have a question:  what was the laundry room moment?

Michelle Duggar has a moment of breakdown surrounded by piles of laundry when she had like 10 kids under 10 and no bigger kids to help. She was rethinking having so many kids then God sent her a laundry angel in the form of an older woman from church and she went right on reproducing.

Ohh she was pregnant when she got married! I follow her but didn’t put 2 and 2 together. How far along was she? So that’s why she married at 17!

I guess we shouldn’t be surprised. Fundies and conservative Christians usually don’t do a good job of teaching their children about birth control. Teen pregnancies are inevitable in these groups.

They got married October 2006, and Landon was born in April 2007 about a month early, so 2-3 months along? They were high school sweethearts; her husband is less than a year older than she is.

I love baseball but I'm dreading the new season because the White Sox ownership is THE FUCKING WORST. I watched Dominican League Baseball (Lidom!) over the winter and fell in love with their joy, spirit, and exuberance. The broadcasts were in Spanish and my Spanish is pretty weak but I loved catching phrases and repeating them. Bombe! I'm sad about MLB and Commissioner Idiota's busywork rules. But I love baseball, always and forever.
I guess I don't have a point. Just bitching. Te amo mucho, Lidom!

Feeling ragey this morning. I have a doctor's appointment this afternoon in the hope of getting help for an ongoing injury. I went to a (different!!) doctor late last year who completely blew me off. He wouldn't do diagnostic testin, he refused to send me to a specialist, and he just told me to "take it easy" and "take ibuprofen." I'm hopeful for today's appointment but I'm also feeling a SEVERE amount of rage at that doctor from last year!

It is definitely strep skin infection. I am getting so damn tired and run down from this. Who the f would immagine being hospitalized freaking TWICE for a rash?
