Alyssa & John 3: Modesty Make-Up

I think it's kind of silly to say just because she owns a cleaning business, she gets a pass on her filthy carpets. I'm a teacher by day, does that mean when I get home I don't have to help my kids with their schoolwork (elementary children, not middle/high school FYI)? Nope, I might have already taught language arts and math all day, but I still have to help my own children at night as well. It's called just being a responsible person. Someone on the previous thread mentioned your nail technician, but I think there is a difference here. Living in a clean home, versus having your nails done up. One is a need the other is a want.

With that being said, do I expect her house to be spotless just because she owns a cleaning business? Absolutely not. She is human, just like we are....but golly, those carpets really are something else. If she has tried cleaning those carpets and can't get the stains out (and replacing them isn't financially an option), maybe just don't post pictures standing on them. Her living room had tiled (or vinyl, can't tell), flooring. Common sense says that would be a better backdrop.

I wouldn't buy new carpets for my landlord, and it sounds like a lot of people here feel the same way.

However, some tenants do fix up their place, essentially improving it for the landlord. Look at the improvements Chad and Erin have done to their rental home.

I know we snark but Alyssa actually looks adorable here, it also shows how freaking young she really is

I bet her parents are giving all the side eye, thoughts, and prayers.

Those are super short shorts by their standards. She looks amazing in them. I would not assume she was fundie if I spotted her. I love being in public and spotting fundies. We only really get exclusive breathans and some Baptist’s in my area.

Cute girls, but I looked up their church and what they believe in. Typical stuff - no homosexuality/incest/pedophilia, no sex outside of marriage, no abortion (even in cases where the mother’s health is at risk), and also no evolution. The world was created in six literal 24 hour periods and you must tithe 10%. Must live a godly way and surround yourself by godly people lest your own godliness be compromised

So.....who said Alyssa wasn’t fundie again?

I think some people do.

Because shorts. And tank tops. And leggings. She’ll probably send her kids to school. And she probably won’t have any more kids!

Yes, the delightful grey area of Conservative Christianity/fundie light/fundie and the multiple areas of overlap. I do get that people are pointing out she may differ significantly from her parents in several areas. If the anti-lgbt and anti-abortion stuff ever does go away, I would expect it to be one the last things to go. Far easier to loosen up the clothing and entertainment standards.

I think Alyssa will have more. I think she'll go till she at least gets a boy but with just hearing about her heart condition and how she has a fifty percent chance of reacurrance I really hope for her own health  she doesn't have more.

I think Alyssa is very much a non-critical thinker. I think she believes and does the fundie speak, and will continue to do such,  as long as it does not impact her wishes and desires too much. This heart condition, especially if it reoccurs, will cause her to  pause because of how it has affected her life. If she can continue to have kid after kid without it affecting her body, mind, marriage, pocketbook, free time, manicure, which we all know is doubtful , she’ll keep popping them out. I don’t think she approaches the rigid rules the same way that Michaela or even Erin does- Right now the fundie speak works for her, and when it no longer does, that’s when real change will happen. As long as all these folks have access to quick, easy, endless sources of money and remain undaunted and unburdened  by the realities of every day life, there will be no real change.

I don't understand. Isn't everyone against incest and pedophilia?

That the church puts LGBTQ relationships on the same level as incest and pedophilia is the actual issue. I think that’s what @front hugs > duggs was getting at.

I have their home church linked to their summary on the Family Summaries thread. Here’s a screenshot of that particular part of their statement of faith:

Perhaps the original poster was pointing out that the Webster’s Church is purposely grouping premarital sex and homosexuality with things like pedophilia and incest? That was the impression I got.

ETA: Posted at the same time as @nickelodeon. Sorry!

ITA, that is been my take on Alyssa too.   It seems she will make changes when it no longer works for her.   Right now the changes are such that she can do what she wants and still present herself as fundie or perhaps fundie enough.   When she runs into something that will more seriously challenge her beliefs for example, like limiting family size due to money constraints or health reasons, she will likely reassess it.

Yes, thank you @nickelodeon and @VelociRapture (also didn't realize you had that in the summaries - apologies for pointing out redundant info!).

The idea of homosexuality, porn, and even adultery within the same list as incest, pedophilia, and bestiality makes me think that they view all those "sins" as one in the same. I personally have an issue with that and find it problematic.

It's interesting that Alyssa calls it "Easter" now, and not "Resurrection Sunday."

Also, interesting to confirm that their church requires a 10% tithe. That adds to the mystery of their household budget. There were people who swore up and down they wouldn't tithe, but that looks unlikely in light of this.

I only have the name and link to their Church website listed, not any other information about it. I thought that’s make it easier for people to look around if they wanted to. :)

isn't that what most faith's think though that all sin is equal that seems to be what is thrown in my face when I try to point out something bad and a religious person will say those without sin cast the first stone and all sin is equal. which baffles me but seems to be the mind set not just in the fundy world.

The flattening of different "sins" is definitely a fundie staple. (I remember that after Joshgate, all the fundies were handwaving the molestations with "All of us have sinned! One time YOU invited everyone to your birthday party except Jimmy, so how can you condemn child abuse?") However, it's not typical of all religions or even all Christianities. And even faiths that do subscribe to the idea that all sins are equal may not judge homosexuality to be a sin at all.
