Star Trek

Thought I'd start a thread for all things Star Trek.

I like Discovery and look forward to each new episode.  That said I was thinking that if I was in charge of Discovery when it was first made I would have made time travel and section 31 verboten.  As in no shows being done about either in any form.  They're both crutches that the writers use to the show's detriment.

I am also not fond of the mirror universe. It just always comes across as contrived. I boycotted Discovery for a long time because of CBS’ extortion, but watched it to prepare for the Star Trek cruise because several of the actors were going to be on the ship. I like the show, but it’s a bit uneven, just like all the other series.

BTW, I hate, hate, hate section 31.

I love Trek, but I won’t watch Discovery because I refuse to pay for yet another streaming service. I will just curl up with Voyager, TOS, TNG, and DS9 on Netflix instead.

I just came across this old interview that James Doohan - the original Scotty - gave.

You'll all excuse me but I got something in my eyes now.

Stacey Abrams got promoted to an office neither Kemp or any other Branch Trumpvidian ever will

Quote

Stacey Abrams may be running again to be Governor of Georgia, but the avowed Star Trek fan makes a pretty good President of United Earth in the 32nd century, as was proven in the Star Trek: Discovery Season 4 finale that launched today.

Coming at the end of a vociferous season of the Alex Kurtzman and Paradise co-showrun series and the heart thumping “Coming Home” finale, the surprise cameo by Abrams was treated like a state secret. Yet, at the end of cycle that saw some First Contact and Sonequa Martin-Green’s U.S.S. Discovery captain Michael Burnham and team stop the celestial rampage of the DMA, it made a lot of sense. Add to the fact that this was a pivotal Trekverse season that found the Federation partially rebuilt, it almost seems inevitable and the polar opposite of the infamous Kobayashi Maru

“I’m still floored when I think about Stacey gracing us with her presence in our Season 4 finale,” Martin-Green told Deadline of the woman widely regarded as having saved American democracy joining Discovery. “We spent so much of our time fanning out and pretending to be cool in her midst,” the Walking Dead alum reveals of herself and cast mates Horsdal, Doug Jones, Anthony Rapp, Mary Wiseman, Wilson Cruz, David Ajala, Blu del Barrio and Ian Alexander. “She’s a legend in the making and a civil hero, and she was an absolute delight to work with,” Martin-Green adds.

“She wowed us with her charm, humility, and generosity, and she whipped out some acting chops too!” said the barrier breaking actress who portrays the first Black female Star Trek Captain. “It was an honor for me as a Black woman to stand with her in the story. It’s an experience I’ll cherish for the rest of my life.”

It was so nice to see her on the show.  And if nothing else I'm all ready for the Branch Trumpvidian reactions

Here's the real breakout star of Strange New Worlds

Quote

“Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” stars Anson Mount, Rebecca Romijn, Ethan Peck, Celia Rose Gooding, Babs Olusanmokun, Jess Bush, Melissa Navia, Christina Chong, Bruce Horak, and Mount’s epic hair, dubbed by many fans, Pike’s Peak. The hair is a salt-and-pepper marvel, a magnificent mane that’s inspired many a meme. Fans have shared more than a meme here and a meme there, and Mount himself has liked a few of them. Heavy writer Eric Pesola recently posted a feature that examined the popularity of “Strange New Worlds” and Pike’s hair, interviewing Danny Epperson, who created the Twitter account, “Captain Pike’s Hair” (@CaptPikesHair), which is devoted to Pike’s Peak and other “Trek” news.

Now, Heavy has done the heavy lifting of collecting a collection of Pike’s Peak memes — along with some fan comments — from across the Internet and gathering them all in one place.

Star Trek has always been woke. Anyone who says it’s new to preach tolerance and respect for other people’s choices clearly doesn’t Trek, ‘cause that shit goes back to the ‘60s.

The very first Number 1 was a women and an Alien played portrayed by Majel Barret(of course) Whether she was recast because she was too unknown of an  actress to please the studio or it was just too revolutionary for the times is a debate.

Oh yeah. Trek has always had issues with female characters (note: for me, Trek ended with Voyager, though I tolerate picard). The sexism in TOS is breathtaking, though it was still groundbreaking for the time. TNG has its moments of ugly, and you do NOT want to start me on Voyager and how much I hated Seven’s character and how show suddenly ignored interesting female characters like B’Lanna to show off the (admittedly VERY) hot woman in the metallic spandex. I can rant about this for days.

All that said, it doesn’t negate that Trek has often been at the forefront of tolerance for LBGT folk and POC in particular and is basically a socialist utopia.

My understanding is that the studio gave Roddenberry  a choice - either Barrett or Nimoy, not both so Roddenberry went Nimoy instead.

I just finished watching the latest episode of Picard.  I've got something in my eyes now.

I just finished watching the final episode of Picard.  Yeah, got some further obstructions in my eyes this morning.

Spoiler

Once again the Enterprise-D took names and kicked ass.

And come on Enterprise crew.  I've been waiting 36 years for Data to finish that one certain limerick regarding a young woman from Venus.

Yesterday I wanted to watch some older episodes of Star Trek.  So I signed on to Disney+ and was searching through the service going where the hell is Star Trek?  All they have is this Star Wars.  Then I remembered.  Oh, right.  Star Trek is on Paramount+.

For my latest example of feeling old, Sir Patrick was two years younger than what I am now when this scene was broadcast....
