I'm wondering if we'll hear about Annabel at all on the show?

If they do I think it will either be covered next season with the rest of the pregnancies/births, or there will be a note at the end of Tuesday's episode saying something along the lines of 'Tragically, shortly after the filming of this episode Joy suffered a miscarriage of her daughter, Annabell Elise. This episode is dedicated to her memory.'

Talking of the births though; there have been no birth specials of Lauren/Kendra's girls yet. Don't TLC usually release them a week or so after the birth?

I hated that the girls had to go back to cook and set up the tents while the guys got to do a "fun" activity, but at least we didn't have to see anyone hiking in skirts and flip flops.

I just read the summary of the episode on Ellie's blog (she's a friend/leghumper, so it's all just straight description and no fun snark). As soon aas I read that bit, I came here.

"This week for family night, the Duggars are going on a camping trip, planned by Jana. When they arrive at the Devil’s Den State Park campground, Jim Bob and the boys meet up with an orienteering instructor to embark on a map challenge. Jana collects their phones before they leave. “All of us girls thought it’d be fun to take the boys’ phones away,” says Jana. “That way they’d have more of an experience of really just using a map and trying to find their way to camp.” Meanwhile, the ladies set up camp and make dinner. They have an RV and some tents, which they successfully put up using girl power."

 grrrrrrr

Here's the blog in case anyone is interested:

The Mormons were my first thought too when learning of Duggar Family Night. I suspect they took the idea from some Mormon blog but want to pretend it's a Duggar thing.

Ha ha, totally my first thought, too. The Duggs would hate knowing they're taking after those non-Christian* Mormons!

*As an agnostic atheist, I have no dog (or god, ha ha) in this fight; I just know evangelicals think Mormons are following a false prophet, so the irony amuses me.

I am thinking they may do a joint birth special since they are close together.

They are so clearly out of content with 5 pregnant women that they just have to do whatever they can sitting down?  They have to remind us its all about #Jesus and being a good submissive wife!

Really pales in comparison to all the other drama going on but. Some humble thoughts anyway.

  • JB and Michelle continue to be far too involved in this show.
    • When they're talking about Henry's speech problems, JB and Michelle say they want to help their children thrive. Thus they joined what amounts to a Christian fertility cult and allowed their oldest son to molest four of their daughters with nary a consequence in sight. Thriving!
  • When they ask how they could categorize Felicity's artwork, Joe and Jessa are the only honest ones. Joe says, "I didn't get any of those terms" when the producers ask him if it's Surrealistic, Post-Impressionist, Existentialism, or some other fourth thing. Jessa says, "I'd say that's finger painting."
  • Jenny again looks miserable and completely over the nonsense of her house, which is again Iconic. Michelle has no fucking clue about anything, and Jenny ends up schooling her. It's nice to see she doesn't just nod along to whatever Michelle tells her.
  • JB’s old election signs are decorating the walls of the calf’s shed. Iconic.
  • Michelle says, “Anna enjoys coming over.” It is left unsaid that she enjoys coming over to get away from her sex pest husband.
  • Jeremy is having way too much fun lording his superior fanciness over the most bumpkiny of his in-laws.
    • “This messes you up, huh? Knowing this is frog legs? Do you have a friend frog or something?” Jeremy asks Kendra this while stuffing frog legs in his mouth in a manner unbecoming a gentleman, but what do I do know, I don't own any pocket squares.
    • Because of this, Kendra wisely promises to investigate the restaurant and what they are eating before they eat with Jinger and Jeremy again.
  • The ending was depressing in hindsight because it’s the announcement that Joy is expecting again. JD tries to be funny in saying that “it’s becoming kind of a weekend tradition for somebody to announce that they’re having a baby,” but the joke is on him because he and Abbie are probably going to be announcing two episodes from now. If, you know, TLC doesn't pull the show after all the drama.

Considering that I'm like 90% certain turdanna is living in the warehouse guest house, I find it funny that they say Anna is "coming over" as if she doesn't already live there.

That screen cap of John and Abbie just annoys me. You can't even unlike your arms to eat a grasshopper taco? Come on!

As for Joy's loss, I hope they do address it in a very open way, if Joy wants to. She's been very open on social media. This would be a way for them to actually address real life on this show. Michelle is an anomoly having so many pregnancies and only 2 losses. The truth is many lose pregnancies.

We dont know that there werent other losses.  They always talked about J'Caleb because he/she fit their anti birth control narrative.  Before Jubilee there wasnt a big show for them to make a big deal out of.  We know Anna had atleast one loss but didnt televise it.  Its possible that there were others over the years but it wasnt worth publicizing because it just didnt fit their agenda at the moment, and now they cant go back and admit they didnt mourn their other babies.

I think it's a combination of this and that generally as a society we've become more open about pregnancy loss. The Duggars aren't immune to things like stigma etc and they may have genuinely felt uncomfortable talking about it because they saw it as something you don't share. Not to mention the stigma in their group may have been so much worse than society at large. With Caleb they could use becoming qf as a redemption thing but for other potential losses that wasn't a possibility.

"Moderate" speech delay?  Wait six months to see if he catches up???????

No!  That's not how any of this works!  Well, if their Birth to 3 (assuming Birth to 3 involvement given a speech path came to their home) is as underfunded as it likely is, then yes.  But that's horrific.  Between 12 months and 5 years, average children add about 100 words to their vocabulary every year (most of the 1st hundred comes between 18 mo and 2 years).  Given how often older brother is seen with a book and how often both Jessa and Ben read with the boys, I would actually expect vocabulary development faster than 100 words/year but that's besides the point here.  The point is that even a 6 month delay in services can have long range consequences that don't seem significant when you're talking about a toddler but rapidly multiply in school years.

If you're a child with a moderate to severe speech delay and you're trying to catch up vocabulary as a pre schooler, grammar and prosody (conversational rhythm and give and take, basically) take a back seat.  If you know what to listen for, you can often still hear the lingering effect of slightly stilted prosody in high school and college age kids.

I mean, kuddos to Jessa for contacting Birth to 3 in the first place but shame on Arkansas for underfunding so severely that a 2 year old with 2 intellegable words can't get services (is he two?  or older?)!  My speech kiddo had six words at that age and we had speech path for a year, then aged into "special ed" pre school with additional speech and occupational therapy services and my state's funding for those services is only a few steps ahead of Arkansas!

He will be 3 in February.  I just looked it up.

I was thinking that I've known some children with delayed speech who caught up pretty well but most of them were talking by 2 1/2.  Two intelligible words beyond 2 1/2 is troubling.  She needs to push them to start services.

That is beyond horrific for a 3 year old

I wonder though.  If he's almost 3, he wouldn't qualify for Birth to 3.  In most states I'm aware of, he'd go into early pre school at a local public school.  In my state, it's technically Head Start, but its a HS class in a public school, with certified teachers and specialists pushing in to the classroom to work with individuals and small groups.  Other states just call it public pre school and reserve the majority of slots for low income and special needs students (a 3 year old with 2 clear words has a very clear special need).  I wonder if Jessa's "wait six months" was a way of saying they were refusing services through the public school district.  A savy parent can force the district to provide the speech services without the pre school program but you have to know you can refuse parts of the recommended plan.  Of course, there's also private speech but you pay out the nose for that unless you have one of a very small handful of diagnosis and can prove  to your insurance company that the delay isn't related to birth trauma, injury, or illness.

It's tempting to say "well, if they would do well child check ups this would have been caught sooner" but my experience with my speech kid suggests maybe/maybe not.  I started telling our pediatrician (who was otherwise an excellent doctor) about speech concerns when my son was 18 months old.  He told me multiple times not to worry.  That boys start up a little slower, that my son was within averages (hah!  NO!), basically quietly said I had first time parent syndrome (LOL).  Then, when son when for his 3 year old well child and still only spoke six words and had a moderate to severe level of self harm related to frustration to go along with it, only then was I taken seriously.

@OyHiOh and @Xan  Jessa was the one who said we’ll give it 6 months. The speech Pathologist said let’s see where he’s at in 3 to 5 weeks. It’s not the state delaying services.

Also, Henry was 2 when this was filmed. He won’t be 3 till  February.

Yup . . . . that's more than likely about Jessa and Ben not wanting to send their precious to public pre school :(

Is speech delay in toddlers an epidemic right now? I know a few parents with 2 1/2 year olds going through this right now and a big concern seems to be the wait lists. First for the hearing test then for the speech therapist and waits can be up to 6 months possibly. that is a long time for the toddler and the parents to wait... i can see how it would be frustrating for both the child and parent. Does anyone know of online resources with tips or advice for parents who are waiting (given the childs hearing is ok)? Is just talking and reading to the child enough? Limiting screen time?

I’m not a speech therapist, but I have been through over 20 years worth of speech/special ed classes with my kids.  Speech therapy isn’t magic.  A speech therapist isn’t going to work with your child once a week for a hour and, instantly get them to talk.  At Henry’s age, a speech therapist will be more of a guide.  They will give the parents advise, techniques and monitor progress to facilitate speech but the really “work” will be done by the parents.   A good therapist will identify gapes that a parent might miss.  So while speech therapy is a excellent and necessary thing, the parents need to be 100% on board.  There are all kinds of resources that a speech therapist can steer parents towards.  So if one can’t get in to see a therapist, there is still a lot you can do.  Ben and Jessa need to jump on this now and not just wait to see what will happen.  Good thing they only have 3 kids, they still have time for Henry.  Just wait til number 10ish, that poor kid will get lost in the shuffle.

My youngest was in speech therapy for about 5 months around that age (2 1/2).  His issues were around articulation of consonants.  He got one-on-one services through the state (if he'd stayed in after age 3 he would have transitioned to the school district and I think it would have been a small group class but he 'graduated' before then).  Anyway, I only was with him on his first lesson - after that they took him back without me - but a couple of fun things they did to work on his muscles in that area included having him blow bubbles and having him lick a sucker (not suck it - he had to stick his tongue out to taste it).

Of course those exercises only are useful for his type of delay, but if you know any kids for whom that's the issue feel free to pass that on.

BTW my oldest is hoping to become a speech therapist.  She finished her BA this past May with the wrong major and is taking the rest of the prerequisites now that she needs to apply for SLP programs.

My son was in speech therapy when he was in second grade. He had trouble with TH, so Those and Them were Dose and Dem. He loved speech therapy, she always gave him a candy when they finished. She also looked like Kristen Davis (Charlotte from SATC). My son was too young too know then and no longer remembers her, but I do. I even told her.

Delayed speech is the first signs of a child with dyslexia.  Many interventions can resolve many potential issues.  They need to jump on this immediately.
