You may find out the answer to your question sooner than you think. The chances of Trump getting the virus have risen exponentially. If you wander over to the Corona thread, you will find that Pence and McConnell were potentially exposed to the virus... and are not being quarantined.

I wish we could quarantine all of the scum people in this sham administration in a small room. It would be like a real life Hunger Games with germs.

Dear Candace,

COVID-19 is not a flu, as you repeatedly state.  It is a new respiratory illness for which there is little known.  There is no treatment, and while there is a test available, it has proved difficult for many Americans to obtain. People of all ages are being affected. Morbidity and mortality are not laughing matters, especially for someone who claims to be pro-life.

Thoughts and prayers,

America

Candace, if you live long enough, you'll be 80, and another "pro-life" conservative will be yapping about killing you off for tax-cuts or whatever. Don't whine when it happens to you, sweetheart.

I *finally* convinced my mom to forego their trip to Florida, and this might turn into a rant.

Background: Mom is 56, dad is 62 with asthma (still uses inhaler), my 85-year-old grandmother who had trouble with a cold last year lives with them.

So earlier she said she would cancel if Trump cancelled flights. I had an lol and told her he wouldn't do that because it would hit airlines hard, and we wouldn't know how long it would be for. And also, the air company isn't going to cancel unless so many people do it's no longer financially worthwhile for the plane to head down.

"Well if he doesn't people will say he's killing more people and if he does people will say he's wrong for that and no matter what he does it will be wrong, that's the real wrong."
That's the real wrong? Are you fucking kidding me?! Trump isn't someone who's been hard done by! He was given enough money to declare bankruptcy 6 times, and how do you bankrupt a casino?? He was given a reality TV show, he had 3 conventionally attractive wives, and his only qualification for President was that he's a citizen - that's failing upward with a vengeance!

I asked her why, since she's so devoted to health, she's not taking this seriously:

"There is more going on then just this virus, you will know soon enough. I told you people will be arrested for their crimes against humanity."

Yeah, you've been saying that for 3 fucking years. I'm getting so tired of this. I am just so angry right now. I'm tired of this 'poor little rich boy' shit. He wanted to defund the CDC, and he never bothered finding replacements for those that quit! It doesn't matter if he succeeded in it or not (and he only didn't because of Congress); the fact remains that he doesn't think the CDC is important.

I was out with a friend today, standing in support of our Planned Parenthood clinic. An anti-abortion group is doing 40 days of protest there, I guess for Lent, and my friend has committed herself to be there every day with a counter message.

Our town is mostly liberal and we generally get a lot of thumbs up and smiles as people drive by. Today a woman rolled down her window while the light was red. We came over, and she asked us if we "are for the babies." I said yes, we love babies and want them to be wanted and cared for.

She said, "So you'll be voting for Trump then."

I said, "Never!"

She said, very earnestly,  "But Trump loves the babies," and drove off.

On the other hand, three different men walking by took the time to stop and thank us. One was oldish, one 40ish, and one college age.

Quote

Kid Rock is refusing to close down his Nashville bar despite a city order to do so.

In trying to combat the spread of coronavirus, Nashville's Mayor John Cooper ordered all restaurants to cut their capacity in half, and all bars were ordered to close for the time being. The rap-rocker's bar in the city's famous Lower Broadway section, however, is continuin

Following the city order, restaurateur Steve Smith -- who co-owns Kid Rock's Big Ass Honky Tonk & Steakhouse — issued a scathing response, thumbing his nose at the mayor.

"We appreciate the efforts of Mayor Cooper to combat the COVID-19 virus, but unless there's a statewide mandate that directs all bars and restaurants to be closed, the request made by Mayor Cooper is unconstitutional as he is targeting a select group of businesses," the statement read.

Still, Smith says he's sympathetic to the people who have contracted the virus, but implied that the government is overstepping.

"[A] Tootsie's patron as immediate as last night, mentioned having lived through the polio epidemic and didn't recall such extreme measures being handed down in history," he said. "In response, Tootsies Orchid Lounge, Rippy's, Honky Tonk Central, Kid Rock's Big Ass Honky Tonk & Steakhouse and The Diner will continue to remain open to serve the public until such statewide mandate is issued from the Governor of Tennessee."

Kid Rock has not yet commented publicly on the refusal to close or the mayor's directive.

g to welcome customers with open arms.

While American citizens try their best to take every precaution possible to halt the pandemic spread of coronavirus, Kevin Stitt, Governor of Oklahoma, shared a tweet on Saturday night that infuriated users online. In the since-deleted tweet, Governor Stitt, a conservative Republican, shared a selfie with two of his six kids, dining at the extremely crowded The Collective Kitchen and Cocktails restaurant in Oklahoma City.

He captioned the picture, “Eating with my kids and all my fellow Oklahomans at the @CollectiveOKC. It’s packed tonight! #supportlocal #OklaProud.” While Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) implore people to wash their hands and to practice “social distancing,” which means purposely avoiding highly populated areas to prevent spreading the deadly coronavirus, it appeared that the Oklahoma governor missed the memo.

Update: I asked my mom if she had cancelled her flights and she said yes. I asked her how long she had to rebook, and she confessed she hadn't actually cancelled yet; she's waiting to see if they cancel domestic flights. I sent her a link to assure her that she won't be charged any fees if she cancels, buuut nope, she wants to wait.

Also:
"There is more going on then just this virus, you will know soon enough. I told you people will be arrested for their crimes against humanity."
And then she sent me Luke 8.

Sigh.

Your mom's comment reminded me of this guy I used to watch on YouTube, who was convinced that the Rapture of the Christian church was going to occur on a specific date. When the day finally arrived, his videos got more and more panicked as the day went on, and he was still here.

It hurts when someone we love gets caught up in something like that. :text-imsorry:

Uh-huh. :violence-smack:

I just don't understand how some people are so incredibly stupid. Or how people who otherwise seem reasonable just turn their brains off somehow when it comes to Trump. It's maddening.

But if they want to self-select themselves out of the gene pool (and off the voting rolls) by refusing to follow the recommendations to reduce the spread of the coronavirus, they can go right ahead. I have sympathy to their families and loved ones, but damn. Decisions have consequences. Not everyone can be shielded from dumb decisions like Trump seems to be.

I apologize if that sounds cold, but I'm just really struggling today.

Like I told Mr No, some people are going to find out the hard way that science is real.

Graham is using the COVID crisis to spread his message of hate. "Evangelist Franklin Graham Forces Volunteers For His Makeshift Hospital In NYC's Central Park To Sign Belief Statement That Gays Face 'Eternal Damnation'"

Spoiler

Evangelical minister Franklin Graham has set up a makeshift hospital in Central Park to help the city's overwhelmed hospitals deal with patient overflow.

We never imagined that we'd be rolling our eyes at someone jumping in to help in the middle of a pandemic...and yet...

Franklin Graham, son of televangelist Billy Graham, runs a charity called Samaritan's Purse. The charity uses donations to help fund assistance where it can—in this case by setting up a 68-bed tent hospital in the park to handle patients that nearby Mount Sinai hospital cannot hold.

So far, so good.

The homie JC would approve.

JC would approve right up until it comes to the part where Franklin Graham needs to staff that 68-bed tent hospital.

For that, he needs doctors, nurses and other medical professionals. So he put out a call for Christian medical professionals who want to step in to help.

Those medical professionals responded, expecting to be asked about their areas of expertise, medical training, whether they had been exposed, etc.

That's not what happened.

Instead, potential volunteers were first asked to sign a "Statement of Faith" that is the sort of thing Jesus would flip tables about. Yeah, if you have ever actually delved into what Jesus himself says and does in the Bible, it looks nothing like any of the stunts the Grahams pull.

According to biblical stories, Jesus hung out with sex workers, told men to chop their hands off if they touched anyone without consent and stab their eyes out if they couldn't stop looking at whatever revealing clothes women wore and never actually said a SINGLE word about the LGBT community.

That stuff all came from minor characters taken out of context when they spoke against adultery in Leviticus and lust and the tradition of temple whores in books like Romans and elsewhere. According to those who think God hates LGBTQ people, they can only find seven places in the old and new testament that if taken out of context might condemn men having sex with each other.

Want to guess how many references there are about adultery?

JC even broke the ten commandments down to just one because he figured people would forget the others (seriously, that's in there). Just love without conditions.

Help.

Care.

Whether or not we're Christian or religious at all, we can all pretty much get behind that, right?

The "Statement of Faith" that potential volunteers were asked to sign laid out a LOT of conditions before these brave and already-overworked volunteers could jump in to help care for any patients.

Like first you had to condemn them to hell if they are LGBT. Nope. Not kidding.

Before Graham even asked about the volunteers' medical qualifications, they were told to sign a statement that read, in part:

"We believe God's plan for human sexuality is to be expressed only within the context of marriage, that God created man and woman as unique biological persons made to complete each other."

"God instituted monogamous marriage between male and female as the foundation of the family and the basic structure of human society. For this reason, we believe that marriage is exclusively the union of one genetic male and one genetic female."

The statement ended by noting that any who stray from those beliefs would face damnation and eternal judgment in hell.

There was no way to continue as a volunteer if you refused to sign the statement that you believe gays, trans people, nonbinary people, non-monogamous people, anyone who has committed infidelity or who is not XX or XY genetically is going to hell.

Mayor DeBlasio praised the charity for coming forward during this crisis, but has not commented on the statement that volunteers are forced to sign. That doesn't mean the statement hasn't faced scrutiny, however.

Potential volunteers have spoken out about how totally irrelevant it is as well as how it goes against everything a medical professional tries to do in their practice, particularly doctors in NYC who are accustomed to treating patients from various backgrounds.

The "Statement of Faith" goes against their mission to help everyone possible. It's also potentially illegal.

A spokesperson from NYC City Hall released a statement directed towards these concerns:

"Our record on human rights is clear; and we are confident that the joint effort by Mt. Sinai and Samaritan's Purse will save New Yorkers' lives while adhering to the values we hold dear by providing care to anyone who needs it, regardless of background."

The spokesperson also insisted that the tent hospital must abide by the same rules and regulations that Mount Sinai does, including minding all HIPPA regulations and a policy of non-discrimination.

That sounds more in line with the words of Jesus, but that doesn't mean it's what the Grahams believe.

We will see how this plays out.

Heaven Schmeaven....I'm beginning to think the Grahams have their own private villa waiting for them in hell.

ETA: they need to kick his sorry bigoted ass out of the park.  It's only 68 beds - surely some other DECENT organizations can help come up with that.

This is straight up QAnon shit. You may or may not want to query you parents about their beliefs regarding QAnon.

QAnon followers believe that there will be a massive  roundup (tens of thousands!) of horrible Democrat/liberal Soros sex ring cannibal pedophiles (including Hillary, I'm sure) and they'll all be sent to GITMO!

This particular QAnon belief has been floating around for a year or two.  The fact that it's been predicted numerous times and nothing has happened has not shaken QAnon followers' belief that it WILL happen.

JFK, Jr. never died in a plane crash and  will reveal himself  is another QAnon belief.  It was no surprise to rational people that JFK, Jr. did not show as predicted.

Oh, I know. She began telling me these weird things 3 years ago (I've still not lost use of my cell phone or Internet, weirdly enough) and wouldn't tell me where she was getting them from. Sooo I googled it and confronted her. For whatever reason, the woman who told me not to trust people on the Internet when I was a teenager thinks this is totally legit.

When I came home for Christmas last year she even had Q merch. I did observe that if the 'deep state' was real, it's odd that Trump 1.) got elected 2.) is openly Tweeting such things without fear for his life 3.) is still alive.. but she assured me they're trying. Pretty much everything that goes against Trump is the deep state.

She usually obsesses over things for 5 years, so hopefully in 2 more years she'll be over this one. There really is no talking anyone out of conspiracy.

As for my dad, he just goes along with whatever she says (but he does have to live with her). Unfortunately, my mom's mom also lives with them and has gotten into the Fox News rabbit hole... she doesn't use the Internet, but she does believe whatever my mom tells her.
