Michelle 2: Mom of 13 & YouTuber Accused of Neglect on Dr. Phil

Get the popcorn out and rescue ferrets may be needed for this rabbit hole... :popcorn2:We were discussing this family in the MisForMama thread and some suggested we create a new thread.

Michelle & Rod have 12 going on 13 kids and most of the kids feel neglected because "Our mom is either pregnant, nursing, or making YouTube videos" and father is someone "We don't really know" and one kid says on Dr. Phil, "I feel like my dad is a stranger living in my house". The husband says the mom neglects the kids with her YouTube channel, GOTKiDz. The kids agree that the mom neglects them for their Youtube channel. A sister says "I don't think my parents should have children anymore and they should focus on the ones they already have."  The family's kids are having major issues. It's tragic.

Names: The kids names rival the family from New Zealand. A sister is named "Sunshine", a brother named "Iron Rod", one named "Tuesday", another named "Daily"...

In one of the other videos at the link on the Dr. Phil website below, Dr. Phil says to the mom "I get that you always wanted to have 13 kids but was there ever a point where you said, my doing this, my being pregnant all the time, is not fair to the kids that I have?" Dr. Phil also said "I'm going to give you a COMMON SENSE alert-- first step, get rid of homeschooling and have the kids go to public school." The mom gets MAD about it--and is still mad per her YouTube video. Dr. Phil says "COMMON SENSE ALERT!! YOU DON'T HAVE THE TIME TO RUN A SCHOOL! YOU'RE HAVING A THIRTEENTH CHILD! YOU DON'T HAVE THE MANPOWER!"

Link to the entire show consisting of all of the video parts here on Dr. Phil's website (the entire show is separated into clips of about 7 videos): https://www.drphil.com/shows/12-kids-one-on-the-way-and-too-many-problems/

Michelle was NOT HAPPY with how she was portrayed on Dr. Phil.
In the spoiler is only one of almost 3 videos of her ranting about Dr. Phil and fanatically defending homeschooling on her GOTKiDz Youtube:

Spoiler

Also, she REALLY wants to be famous. She makes her titles and descriptions of her videos overly dramatic. Her 13th baby was born about 4 days ago at home and has Down Syndrome. HOW crazy is it to be 47 years old having your thirteenth baby, and despite knowing the baby has Down Syndrome, you STILL give birth at home?! After the kids went on Dr. Phil accusing her of neglect and addicted to her YouTube channel, Michelle is BACK AT IT and still streaming a LIVE YouTube video EVERY DAY. She reminds me of JRod...

My mom had three kids to home school. My older brother was so much work she said she didn’t have time to properly home school my younger brother and me. I couldn’t imagine home schooling 12. That’s nuts. Kids need social interaction. Plus if they are telling you you aren’t being a good parent you need to listen.

i would think that someone who has a child with down syndrome, would actually know it is down syndrome and not downS syndrome, as the title of the youtube video spells it. that baby is not going to have her many needs met. i suspect this mother will say things like jrod about jannie...she's fiiiine, no issues at all, she's a miiiiiiiracle :my_dodgy:

Iron Rod?!? Is that the kid's real name?? That could probably be child abuse right there...

Thanks for making this thread! I'm working my way through the Dr. Phil clips. This family is a mess. I'm watching the clip about the dad's porn addiction that he's had since high school. I have to wonder if this is a real addiction, or if he just watches porn sometimes but thinks of it as an addiction because of his Mormon beliefs. I don't think it counts as an addiction unless it's impacting his functionality in life. Can he not go a single day without it? Is it impacting the family finances? Can he not make it through a workday without taking a porn break?

One of the kids also casually mentioned a drinking problem. AND he has a gambling problem? JFC, STOP HAVING KIDS.

These addictions all just scream escapism. Oh god, I'm agreeing with this self-help rando "Coach" Mike. Yuck. But Rod is barely present and probably crushed by the 3 jobs he has to work to support his 12 children. So it makes total sense that he would just crave some oblivion at the end of the day. Some tiny escape from the oppressive life he's built for himself. There are not enough hours in the day to decompress from an 80 hour work week AND be a good parent to 12 children. It just isn't possible. He clearly knows that every day, no matter how hard he works, he's failing someone in that house. Yeah, I'd be drowning myself in addictions too.

Even if they can't have more kids, the damage is done. They've already got 13 that they clearly cannot handle. I hate that I have more sympathy for Rod than I do for Michelle, but her stubborn insistence on having 13 children and homeschooling all of them is repulsive to me. She claims it only takes her 3 hours to homeschool them!? How is that possible? That just sounds like their education is also being neglected. Fantastic.

Thanks for this, @luv2laugh I needed a new rabbit hole.

While I agree with your statement, if the baby didn't have heart problems (common in DS babies), maybe the homebirth had the same (low) risk than her previous babies? Do we know if she has proper healthcare in her pregnancies? I know that probably she's just stubborn, but I hope she knew that the birth was low risk.

That 1st clip! Sheesh. On and on and on. Mom, if your children are saying you're neglecting them, listen, please just listen. If your other children keep you from paying attention to each individual child, well then you had to many children. Sometimes, not tyo be flippant, there is too much of a good thing.

Wow! We’ve unearthed Mormon Jill! Wowzers, does this gal love to talk. I think each of her 30-minute videos is just one long run-on sentence.

And, um, honey? YOU reached out to Dr. Phil to solve your problems, but it’s somehow his fault that they were exposed?

I’m also loving the way she just emotionally jettisoned all her kids who are over 18, as if the problems she caused them are no longer any of her concern. Completely illiterate at 12? Hey, you’re an adult now—just move out and get a job! Suicidal at 13? Hey, you can just knock on the door any time the “Do not disturb—recording in progress” sign isn’t up.

I could go on all day.

It’s from a Mormon hymn that goes something like, “Hold to the rod, the iron rod...” https://www.lds.org/music/library/hymns/the-iron-rod?lang=eng&_r=1

I also have to say that I kinda hate Dr. Phil and this self-help guru nonsense. Because Michelle clearly needs real help in letting go of these stubborn ideas in her head, and yelling at her on TV is not going to make that happen.

She hoards things, she hoards children, and she gets stuck in these assumptions like "homeschooling actually saves me time" without seeing the obvious damage these things are doing to herself and her family. Why is she so reluctant to let these things and ideas go?

Oh god. Even her own children say the homeschooling failed them, and yet she insists that it's the only thing that works. River didn't learn to read until he was 12?! Oh my god, that's so horrible! That's neglect. You're not a good parent if your kid is struggling that much academically and you just throw your hands up and say "Well, I'm a good parent! I don't know what you need!" and then go have 10 more kids.

You're a bad parent, Michelle. Really bad.

I thought the Finnish blogger's kids names were bad, though it would have been hilarious if she had named her child Wednesday, instead of Tuesday, after Wednesday Adams.

People need to think of the impact on the child before giving out crazy names.

OOooooh my god, I have too many thoughts about this family.

Tell me if I'm wrong, but in the clip titled "Dr. Phil To Guests: ‘I Am Not Opposed To Home School’" I believe I distinctly heard Michelle say that it was River's choice to not learn to read until he was 12. You can hear it at 00:44.  She says "That was his choice." Uhhh, what? Now, she says this after blaming the program that they were using. She says "That was crap! That was a crap program!" So maybe she means he chose the program? But still, you stuck with it long enough that your kid was still illiterate until 12? WHAT???

There are restrictions on how many pets a person can have in many places, for a good reason.

I'm not saying there should be restrictions on the number of kids people should have, or that it's not possible to be a good non-neglectful parent to a large number of kids. I just think most people should consider the amount of time and energy children take before having a large brood of them. It's certainly possible to be a good parent to many. But is it PROBABLE for most people? Probably not.

Someone on the old TWoP Duggar thread beautifully destroyed Michelle D’s “Having too many children is like having too many flowers” line.

I'm just going to live blog her response video because I'm watching it now and I'm sure I'll have thoughts.

Thought #1: She says that her youtube videos are only ever 15 minutes long. This video is 30 minutes. So is the "48 Hours After Baby" one. She's off to a great start!

She's all pissed off about the editing and how she was portrayed, but uhh... she chose to go on this show. She may have even submitted herself for consideration to be on it. Has she not seen Dr. Phil? What did she think was going to happen? Maybe she thought Dr Phil would say "You ARE a perfect mother, Michelle. You children need to make more of an effort for YOU." Mmkay.

Next she's all pissed off that she's being accused of Neglect. OH, she's "given up" her "entire life" to raise her kids. FUCK OFF. You chose to have so many children! This was not a hardship thrust upon you! YOU WANTED 13 CHILDREN. Do not play the bullshit self-sacrifice card here. Oh, nice she manages to casually shame working moms too by saying she's not "one of those moms that spends time outside the home." Nice.

Oh, her kids over 18 don't count as children. OOOOH WOW she's blaming her son for going "down a wild path." She's pissed that he says she doesn't spend enough time with him and she's doing more of her victim bullshit. She doesn't know when she's "allowed" to knock on his door. OH MY GOD She actually just said the words "That's not my problem. He can come to me." NO. NO BITCH. It is never the child's job to chase down the parent and beg for attention. YOU ARE THE PARENT. Oh my god, I want to smack her. Her child is dabbling in drugs and asking for help and attention and that's not her problem? "If he feels neglected that's his own fault." Wow, Michelle. Wow. Mother of the fucking year, right here.

Now she's ranting about how hard Rod works and how everyone in the house is "freeloading." Again, none of these kids chose to be born into this family. They don't owe you shit. You chose to have more than you could afford on a single income. Hey, Michelle. Why didn't you ever think to get a damn job? You're clearly not putting much effort into homeschooling your kids if they're barely literate by the time they hit puberty!

She seems to really REALLY resent the fact that her 18+ children still need parenting, financial help, emotional support, etc. She is ranting so hard about it. And she seems to want special credit for taking her kids to doctors. Ok, wow! ROUND OF APPLAUSE for doing the bare minimum. They go AT LEAST once a year, people! My dog goes to the vet at least once a year too. It's literally the bare minimum of care.

Wow, you get your kids new glasses and contacts every year!? Well stop the presses! You go to the dentist TWICE a year? WOOOOOW Someone get this woman a fucking medal! She's obviously belaboring this because she's trying to assuage her own guilt, but it is seriously repulsive. Shout all you want, honey, your kids are still contemplating suicide.

Their doctor is a 4-hour drive away in Utah. Why? Find a new doctor that's closer you moron! What a colossal waste of time!

She's ranting so hard she can barely catch her breath. She's shouting about all the fun outings they go on. Camping! Amusement Parks! Obviously, that means she cannot POSSIBLY be neglecting them as individuals.

Oh my god, I'm only 10 minutes in.

It’s horrific that she blames her older kids’ depression and addictions on them. They clearly were traumatized somehow and hadn’t had good tools to cope with their upbringing.

One kid said “It would be nice if you, Mom, could at least say ‘Hi’ to us.”

Her YouTube is disturbing. She says she only lives streams for 15 minutes but most of the live stream videos are 30+ minutes long and basically, she does this every single day.

How old are the kids?  I'm a bit confused how they ended up on Dr Phil saying their parents were bad - surely that's a risky thing to do, because the parents could retaliate?   ETA Or is it only the adult children who were included?

And if the mother is so upset about this, how come she agreed to go on the show?  Or is it all coordinated by the family to try to drum up attention?

(Just FYI, Down's Syndrome is the correct medical term in the UK and in a lot of the English-speaking world.  It was changed in the US in 1975 to Down Syndrome by the medical establishment, but per wikipedia, Down's is in common use in the US too. And it could easily that she's picked up a lot of information from sites outside the US, so picked up that spelling without realising it's not the term used by the US medical establishment)

One of the minors revealed on Dr. Phil that he tried cutting and it was a call for help because Michelle neglects them. I felt like crying.

In one of her GOING LIVE YouTube videos (She only goes live like everyday) she said something such as she expected Dr. Phil to only advise her on organization (she’s a FlyLady fan) and wasn’t expecting the kids to accuse her of neglect. She said she expected encouragement from Dr. Phil on being a mom trying her best and needs to be easier on herself or something along those lines.

When one of the minors was talking about his cutting, guess who started crying? The two adult sisters.

Michelle complains that the kids only want her attention when she’s busy and not whenever she’s “available”.

In one YouTube video, Michelle was even discussing going out of town for “me time”. Me time is great but not the priority when you have 13 kids that are accusing you of neglect and are suffering from major issues.

Oh MY GAWD.

I couldn't watch but about two minutes of her videos but I noticed she does a lot of breathless stuff and the hands are in her hair... like JillRod.

I don't watch    Dr. Phil anymore because of all the sensationalism, but he used to offer to    set up and pay for help for people, in their community. Does he do that anymore?

If the mother knew the last fetus had a hole in her heart, perhaps she thought if she gave birth at home, the baby might die and      solve the problem... i very much doubt this. but who knows   what people think.

Part 2! I gotta keep going because I cannot look away at this point.

She's still shouting about how all the fun fall activities the kids get to do. Hay rides! Trick or treating! Face painting! She says the parents do this "Out of service. Out of [the] kindness of our hearts." I haven't felt this repulsed by a parent since I started following the Nauglers! Doing fun things with your kids isn't a service.

Haha, she's so desperate for credit that she's now moving through each season's fun activities to prove that she's a good mom. For the winter season: They're going to (eventually) get over to Kawabunga Bay for their winter wonderland! I bet that will get the kids to stop longing for the grave! They're going to build snowmen and have snow fights! Take that, kids! Now you can't be depressed!

"Why would I do that if I don't care about my kids!?" She seems to fundamentally misunderstand the problem here. The accusations was never that she didn't care. I'm sure she cares about her kids a great deal. But that doesn't mean she's any good at showing it. That doesn't mean they aren't still neglected. This is actually reminding me of Hoarders, and it's fitting that hoarding is one of her many issues. Hoarders claim to love and cherish their possessions and animals, but their actions never show it. They're blind to the neglect and damage they do because they seem to think that "But I love them!" should be enough. It isn't.

God, she's long-winded. She's detailing their Christmas traditions. Ha, she literally said "What more do you want? You want more than that for Christmas?" Michelle, none of the kids complained that Christmas wasn't fun enough.

12:40 - "Tell me, am I not doing enough for my kids? I feel bad for women who aren't doing as much as I am. Because they probably feel like loser moms!"

I just... wow.

To be fair she follows that with "And you shouldn't. You just do the best you can. That's all you can do." True, we cannot do better than our best. But if my kid came to me and said "I'm on drugs and thinking of suicide." My best would not be to throw a shit fit and rant about how my kid is an ungrateful freeloader. But maybe that's just me.

She claims to spend $1600-1800 a month on groceries. This is her evidence against the kids being underfed. The kids did complain about that on the show. Which is pretty damning. I just did a quick google search and found the average family of 4 spends somewhere between $700-1000 on food a month. They have 8 kids at home currently. So is $1800/month enough for a family of 10?

They do pizza once a week though! So obviously no one is starving.

Woah. She's throwing the daughter that complained about being underfed under the bus. "That child loves carbs! But only certain carbs." Basically, she's saying that this girl needs her special favorites or else she whines about not being fed enough.

13:55 - "Because she does't like what we're having. . . . She doesn't want anything that we're normally eating. She only wants certain things. So she may only eat once or twice a week. That's her fault, not mine!"

Y'all. My jaw actually dropped.

This girl is over 18 so naturally, Michelle says "Girl, go get a job and buy whatever you want! I don't care!" That breaks my heart for this girl. I bought my own food when I was a teen, too, because my mom was similarly unconcerned with what my preferences were. I still resent my mom for this.

She's now saying that she had to cut off the older kids and focus on the younger ones. "Because they will take every lovin' minute of every day if I let them be in charge of me!" Oh, so you do neglect some of your children. Just not the under 18's. Got it. What a callous

14:50 - "Kids think they're starving, but they're always hungry! . . . I don't think you should believe everything you hear."

She's really not convincing me that her kids aren't underfed. She hasn't said a word to refute the kids' claim that there are locks on the pantry. She says it's no big deal to skip a meal because there are snacks to eat instead. I suppose those are kept in the locked pantry.

Part 3!

She's red in the face over Dr. Phil implying that her kids don't do chores. I must have missed something because I don't remember that from the Dr. Phil clips. I assumed the kids had to do chores. How not, with that many?

She wants to speak on the "unsanitary conditions" of her home. The little kid's bed doesn't have a sheet on it? I missed that. She claims they put one on it every night before they go to bed. One sheet? Like, you just throw a fitted sheet onto the bed every night? Why? Nevermind the fact that sleeping on just a fitted sheet is odd, maybe they also get a blanket, idk. But why are you putting a fresh sheet every night? That makes no sense. And she claims the kids take the sheets off every night because they'd all rather sleep together in a pile on the floor? Every night? Sorry, not buying it.

They have a housekeeper that comes once a week, to clean thoroughly in addition to the daily cleaning that she and the kids do. Ok, sure. It still looked dirty in those Dr. Phil shots. But she's chalking that up to all the clutter. Fine! Get rid of it. Why is it there? Clutter is dirty. Boxes and piles of crap attract dust, bugs, and mice. They're the perfect place for nasty critters to nest. If your home has piles of clutter in it, it is NOT clean.

Oh yay, she's going to talk about all that she "gave up" in order to homeschool her kids. But it's ok because it is her "favorite hobby." That's a misunderstanding of what a hobby is, but ok.

19:07 - "Do I even deserve to be a mom? You tell me!" Honey, you don't really want to hear the answer to that.

Jesus, she really is soooo long-winded. She's been sidetracked by talking about all the kind and supportive messages she received after that episode. But of course she sought out the negative comments too. She went to a Dr. Phil facebook group or page and they were just saying the stupidest, most closed-minded things!

She wants to make it clear that they're not on welfare or assistance of any kind. Ok, maybe you should be.

21:50 - "That's why my husband works three jobs. Because we pay for our food, we wouldn't ask anyone else to do that. We probably wouldn't want what they have to offer, right? Because we eat a different way."

Huh??? Different how? If they have dietary restrictions I don't see how that would be incompatible with welfare or food stamps.

WAIT WAIT WAIT. She previously hired the same de-cluttering expert that Dr. Phil sent, but claims that she fired this woman because "she didn't know what she was doing." What? How complicated is organizing and getting rid of shit? I love the idea of Michelle meeting Marie Kondo. She'd probably shout at her that she doesn't know what she's doing either.

Shoutouts to all the nice people who validate her! Especially her internet friends Joanna and Heather! Yeah, girl! We'd be such good friends if we ever met in real life!

It is so funny that people are accusing her of being a bad mom! She's obviously not! SO many people are inspired and encouraged by her youtube channel!

Not a word about her kids' suicidal thoughts. Not an iota of concern. This entire rant has been about her. Her feelings and bruised ego are the only things on her mind here. She admits that she submitted herself to Dr. Phil for help with clutter and her "wayward boys" but they turned it into a circus. She clearly didn't think this through or didn't realize that her kids would be so quick to spill the truth. She obviously expected to be praised and helped, not shamed for her obvious shortcomings. Too bad for her.

27:48 - "I've been on here way too long. It's not a big deal because the kids are watching a MOVIE. They're attended to!"

Does she really think a movie counts as being "attended to"? Jesus, that's telling.

That was disgusting.

Bless you for doing that. I don't know if I can handle her or not. I think I need to watch the train wreck. I feel so bad for her kids.

She even said the baby has holes in her heart in a LIVE streamed YouTube video!!! I cannot believe she had a homebirth and even admitted she is a “high risk” pregnancy...

@Melissa1977

That is actually quite common for babies born with DS. That’s why I thought having a homebirth is crazy. Hopefully they are small holes. I can’t believe this woman.

@Hashtag Blessed, you are more patient than I am. I can get through J-Rod and Pope Pee Pee, but I could not do it with this woman. Thank you!

There's something going on with this woman, mental-health-wise. She almost seems hypomanic in that video.
