LGBT perspective: Chris Pratt + Hillsong Church

Howl

Recommended Posts

I didn't know just how bad Hillsong was until Pratt got called out. The Lutheran congregation I grew up in had and as far as I know (I haven't attended services in almost a decade) still has some ties to Hillsong. So there are people in my life who like them. I really have to talk with them now, I knew Hillsong kicked out openly gay pastors, but I didn't know they practiced conversation therapy, or that their founder's father was a child molester!

My little sister regularly attends charismatic hipster mega churches that seem modern but where bigotry is lurking under the surface. (I'm not sure if she has attended Hillsong or not though.) The churches have conferences where they brag about the thousands of souls they save every night. They talk a lot about how today's European youth have "turned their backs against god" but how they, the members of these kinds of churches, are evangelizing more than ever before and winning more souls all the time. They scare me honestly, not only because of their charismatic elements, but because of their regressive values. My sister has been very supportive ever since I came out to her more than 5 years ago, but I'm scared she will one day stop supporting me since I know she hangs around people who think my sexuality is a sin all the time. She even recently said she doesn't really know if homosexuality is okay or not, since the Bible is a bit conflicted on that point. She says she'll always love me though, but I'm so tired of "hate the sin love the sinner" kind of people. I grew up surrounded by them and even though they think they are tolerant because they don't abandon me or other LGBT people in their lives; they are, if they can't accept that what we are isn't a sin, not really so tolerant after all.

So much this. They put the "sin" of being non cishet in a category by itself. No other sinners are prohibited from fully participating in church life, and "all have sinned". These folks do not love the sinner because love does not include rejection and condemnation. I am cishet but I cannot stand this hate the sin love the sinner nonsense directed towards non cishet people, who are people first and foremost.

It's interesting that both Pratt and Page are in the headlines for things they said to Colbert. Colbert is also openly devout, but he is so much more thoughtful and clearly has the ability to engage critically with his Catholic faith.

Which seems like it should be the other way around, right? Colbert, like most practicing Catholics, is Catholic because that's how he and his parents before him going back who knows how far were raised. With these brand-new megachurches, on the other hand, everyone has decided to go there instead of whatever they were doing 5, 10 years ago. You'd think that would mean that you did some research and shopped around-- I mean, if I were going to join a congregation, I would most definitely be asking about their views on LGBT people and women before I even set foot in the door! But apparently not.

If you were raised into it and know of nothing else that's at least some sort of excuse. But if you chose hatefulness out of your own volition it's completely on you.

I can't share him. I'm sorry.

Seriously, I have not had this bad of a celebrity crush since seventh grade. His presence in the world has negatively affected my dating life because of comparisons.

The next two guys on my Fuckit List can't even hold a candle.

I am demisexual, so it's very rare I get crushes on people I don't know personally, or turned on just by looking at a guy, even though I can appreciate attractiveness on an aesthetic level, like I can with another woman.  But when Evans came on screen with that beard in the latest movie, I went "hhnnnggg" and practically melted into my seat at the theater. lol . It made me question myself. ???

Chris Pratt is in hot water on twitter. He was praising his new wife. He included a line that said he thanked her for "giving him a healthy daughter".  People are concerned, because his son with actress Anna Faris has disabilities/health issues and is this a slam at them? I don't know. It may just be his praise for the new wife.  I notice he didn't mention what kind of stepmother his wife is. His new wife has the "gaze at your headship" look down in the photo of her.

I was concerned about how quickly Chris re-married after his divorce. I feel like he was engaged after less than a year of dating. I also wonder if Anna Farris not sharing his religious beliefs played a bigger role than is acknowledged.

I started a new thread about Pratt because I didn’t know about this one. Yeah, what a dick. And I’m so disappointed that Mindy Kaling liked his post.

He thinks he's being funny by being fake-sexist but the real sexism is so deeply ingrained he can't even see it.

Chris Pratt is trash. He can fuck right off. I really wish he didn’t keep getting huge roles and tons of money.

What a douche canoe.  That article won’t make him look any better to his critics because he’s still sounding smug.

So instead of saying, “I posted without thinking and I’m sorry.” He makes a “I has a sadz.” Post and then goes on to talk about god. He reminds me so much of fundies. I know he’s not fundie but there is some overlap in the way he acts. What a man baby. Anna Faris was way too good for him.

He's conservative Christian/fundie-lite. Conservative Christian, fundie-lite and fundementalism are different levels of the same beliefs. I got into fundie-snarking, because of similarities between fundies, fundie-lites, and conservative Christians.

Wow, I learn new things every day. I knew he was Christian, but didn't know all of this.   I assume he still gets big movies because he has contracts with Marvel, etc.

Chris Pratt and his wife announced they are having another child. Chris has a son from a previous marriage and a daughter with Katherine. The announcement is on Instagram. They not only quoted two bible passages; they quoted Psalm 127 on Instagram!!! Psalm 127 is the Psalm from which the Quiverfull movement takes it's name!

I recently managed to not avoid a quote of his somewhere. “I have to talk to my wife about having more kids. I want as many as the big guy will give us.”
It’s talking like a quiver-full and acting like a quiver-full…. I am happy to call this quacker a fundie!

I don't think it's a coincidence he ended up with a wife a good decade younger than him. Anna Farris was pushing 40. I believe she had complications with her first pregnancy. There were reports she wasn't going to have a second child because of that.

He’s going to end up with a bunch of “healthy” children. I’m glad he gets push back for all the shitty stuff he says and does. But I know he thinks it’s all because he’s Christian. I bet he talks about Christian persecution in Hollywood. I hope he’s lost a bunch of his friends in Hollywood. He never used to be like this. He probably used to be an entitled douchy white guy. But now he’s so much worse. He’s an entitle douchy white guy who thinks god is his personal servant.

I love baseball but I'm dreading the new season because the White Sox ownership is THE FUCKING WORST. I watched Dominican League Baseball (Lidom!) over the winter and fell in love with their joy, spirit, and exuberance. The broadcasts were in Spanish and my Spanish is pretty weak but I loved catching phrases and repeating them. Bombe! I'm sad about MLB and Commissioner Idiota's busywork rules. But I love baseball, always and forever.
I guess I don't have a point. Just bitching. Te amo mucho, Lidom!

      Happy International Women's Day!

Humanity may have some work to do, to improve gender equality, but I was glad to hear that France has taken an important step to protect healthcare for women (and people of other genders who can get pregnant).

Feeling ragey this morning. I have a doctor's appointment this afternoon in the hope of getting help for an ongoing injury. I went to a (different!!) doctor late last year who completely blew me off. He wouldn't do diagnostic testin, he refused to send me to a specialist, and he just told me to "take it easy" and "take ibuprofen." I'm hopeful for today's appointment but I'm also feeling a SEVERE amount of rage at that doctor from last year!

Well, the rash is back with a vengeance. It never completely cleared up. I saw the derm yesterday and they did another swab and yup, raging infection again, still? It is definitely strep skin infection. I am getting so damn tired and run down from this. Who the f would immagine being hospitalized freaking TWICE for a rash?

My niece is going to be a seat filler at this year's Academy Awards.  Seat fillers are asked to wear tuxedos regardless of sex/gender.  If you see a pretty young woman with very curly hair, it could be my niece.
