@HarryPotterFan,  years ago someone spray painted "Surrender Dorothy" on one of the bridges over the beltway (I-495) near the Washington, DC, Mormon Temple.  It looks a bit like the Emerald City in The Wizard of Oz.

The "last straw" on my finally making the official move from the SBC to the United Methodist church was hearing and seeing some of the pro-trump crap coming out of the SBC.

In the fundie church that I used to be a part of it began before trump was elected. Members started reposting a "prophetic word" about how God was doing to use him like a "trumpet" to bring Americans back to their Christian roots.

once the election results were in, they started posting about how it was obviously God's will and that he had godly favor. Interestingly, they never said that when Obama was elected.

I remember seeing photos of that!! Too bad it got washed off or painted over. But now they don’t even fill child sized potholes.

Yes! Avengers Assemble! Good for Ruffalo and Chris Evans (who just keeps getting hotter and hotter in this thread!) I wonder if any other avengers will weigh in on this. I hope Ellen gets more support and more people will really have to think about if their expression of faith is harmful to others.

Star Lord needs to pull his head out of his arse.

Chris Evans also posts longing videos and tweets when he's away from home for filming...

About his dog.

Because he adores his dog.

The fact that he’s a dog person and I’m a cat person is a major point of contention in our (fictional) relationship.

From the Elle article:
"Chris has also spoken about how Jack's difficult birth (he was born five months premature) renewed his faith in God."
5 months, 9 weeks.... big difference!!!

I cannot see how they managed to mix up 5 months with 9 weeks. That's (best case) 22 weeks gestation vs 31 weeks gestation. Also you just don't get 22 weeker babies that are 3lb 12oz (1.701kg). More like 1lb (450g) or less. (Yes I am late to the discussion but this is apparently a soapbox I am willing to stand on.)

@VelociRapture, I completely agree about the Hartford (actually Farmington) temple! Its style would have fit in if it had built in the older part of downtown Hartford, but looks entirely out of place where it is. I was sorry to have missed its open house—I was curious to see what it looked like inside.

Yeah, I think it would have been ok in Hartford. I spent a lot of time visiting Farmington growing up and I still visit occasionally now. It’s a pretty quaint New England town, so I feel like it just sticks out like a sore thumb.

Chris Evans can share my bed any day

But do little kids think that temple is Disney World like the one in the DC area?07EB4B92-9E73-4956-93F2-E68D02AFB56C.thumb.jpeg.ce170ce4b3de5f21186cb9bb40a0a823.jpeg

Here’s a photo:

I think they took inspiration from religious buildings in the area, which is a nice gesture. It’s not as bad looking as it could have been, but it’s a very different look from the surrounding area. Farmington is a smallish, slightly more rural town. The area they put it in doesn’t have other big buildings like this, so it just takes you aback a bit when you come across it suddenly.

And for anyone interested, The Hartford Courant wrote an article after some of their journalists did a walk through tour during the Open House period:

My favorite is a video of Evans trying to do push ups and his dog, Dodger, keeps coming over to give kisses and getting in his way. He's also posted video of Dodger in his kennel at the shelter (he adopted a shelter mutt ?) because he took one look at him and knew it his dog and wanted to have a record of the moment. What a wonderful dork.

If this story was about Chris and a shelter kitty instead of a shelter dog, my panties would have just fallen off.

A friend of mine once went to a service at Hillsong's Manhattan location, not because she wanted to join but as an undercover observation type of thing. She is a minor player in the pop music industry and knows some of the celebrities and not-so-much-celebrities who go there, and she felt like they were getting sucked into something crazy. Anyway, the whole thing really creeped her out - apparently they put the prettiest congregants in front to greet everyone and tag along with any visitors to bother them about joining and such. It's definitely focused on the prosperity gospel, as well as maintaining celebrity presences. It strikes me like Scientology in many ways - they ask for LOTS of money (at least at the Manhattan one) and really play up the publicity angle.

I was pretty shocked that there is a real mega church in NYC. Now that I think about it, there are probably others but I really have no clue. I guess that goes to show how religion is pretty much ignored around here, but it was surprising to know how many attendees they had there on a random Sunday.

One of my sisters once visited Elevation Church in Charlotte and she said that they are like this. They have super attractive people who hound visitors about providing personal info so they can follow up and talk to you about joining. She said a team of them literally followed her to her car trying to get her full name and address.

These hipster fundie mega churches are very, very cult like. They are like the IBLP of today. They attract large crowds, people tend to dress in a certain way and they want to worm into every aspect of your life.

Public Service Request: People, there are entirely too many Chrises being discussed here. This old needs a field guide to the Chrises. K thanx!

Seriously, should we be surprised at how fundie Christians & their churches are morphing? Never having been fundie myself, I tend to see them as businesses more than anything else. They are simply marketing their brands or changing their brands to capture greater market shares. Given that view, it's not surprising that so many fundie churches -- especially the cargo cult, mega-churches -- are adopting the hipster brand. Are similar cultural shifts happening in other religious faiths where there are conservative congregations -- say Orthodox Judaism?

In my church lobby is a rack where we keep people’s name tags in alpha order by first name. There are more Chrises than I can count. (In my own family and circle of friends, at one point we had six Chris/Krises.)

I was born in 82. I remember so many Chris’s  around my age. So many babies were named Christopher in the 70s and 80s. Plus there are so many girls named Christina, Kristin, Krista, Christy, and Christine that there are plenty of female Chris/Kris’s to go around.

When Chris Pine hosted SNL, he did a musical number about he was "NOT THAT CHRIS!"  I was a bit bummed that he was in the Wonder Woman movie because I wanted all the Chrises on the Marvel side.

It starts about 1:50.

My oldest daughter has what was one of the top names for little girls in the middle of the 20th Century.  There was only one other girl with that name in her high school and they were not only in the same class, they were good friends.

I love baseball but I'm dreading the new season because the White Sox ownership is THE FUCKING WORST. I watched Dominican League Baseball (Lidom!) over the winter and fell in love with their joy, spirit, and exuberance. The broadcasts were in Spanish and my Spanish is pretty weak but I loved catching phrases and repeating them. Bombe! I'm sad about MLB and Commissioner Idiota's busywork rules. But I love baseball, always and forever.
I guess I don't have a point. Just bitching. Te amo mucho, Lidom!

      Happy International Women's Day!

Humanity may have some work to do, to improve gender equality, but I was glad to hear that France has taken an important step to protect healthcare for women (and people of other genders who can get pregnant).

Feeling ragey this morning. I have a doctor's appointment this afternoon in the hope of getting help for an ongoing injury. I went to a (different!!) doctor late last year who completely blew me off. He wouldn't do diagnostic testin, he refused to send me to a specialist, and he just told me to "take it easy" and "take ibuprofen." I'm hopeful for today's appointment but I'm also feeling a SEVERE amount of rage at that doctor from last year!

Well, the rash is back with a vengeance. It never completely cleared up. I saw the derm yesterday and they did another swab and yup, raging infection again, still? It is definitely strep skin infection. I am getting so damn tired and run down from this. Who the f would immagine being hospitalized freaking TWICE for a rash?

My niece is going to be a seat filler at this year's Academy Awards.  Seat fillers are asked to wear tuxedos regardless of sex/gender.  If you see a pretty young woman with very curly hair, it could be my niece.
