JinJer 47: Sparking J-O-Y

I don't want to play devil's advocate, but in that talking head, what I remember Jinger saying was, "City, please! City, please!" That's a pretty broad category. She didn't say (at least to my knowledge), "I would love to live in New York City." A city could mean a metropolis with 8 million people, or it could mean 100,000 people and a WalMart. I have no reason to believe that Jinger doesn't want to live in LA (and obviously I hope that she does, since she's moving there) but if she ever said that she definitely wanted to live in a 'big city' like NYC or LA, I must have missed it. And it's also possible that she told her mother/family that by 'city' she really did just mean 'near a WalMart', either because that's what she really did mean, or because she felt a lot of emotional pressure to be 'content'.

Is it bad I’m actually kind of...happy isn’t the right word but maybe excited for Jinger? After Jill all those years ago told her to work on her contentment, that her dreams of living in a big city where unrealistic, and now she gets to fulfill that dream? Fundie women especially have, to me, very little joy in their lives. How many of them have fulfilled any dream that isn’t being a wife/mother?

I don't think so--I feel the same. It's a lot more than "living near a Walmart!" I hope it shows her a little more of the world, even incidentally.

She certainly is the one who got the better deal, but I don’t think that equates with her being free.

I personally still have so many wishes for her. I wish she’d gone to school, or maybe gotten a job. I wish she didn’t worship Jeremy so much. I don’t know if she’d be able to thrive as an independent woman, she seems to be pretty reliant on Jeremy.

I agree. Better deal, but not free. I hold out hope for some kind or school or even job, but I feel like it would have needed to happen before Felicity was born (based on their views). But I'm still kind of crossing my fingers that she'll take some kind of photography classes or workshops in LA. Then again, there will be a much higher cost of living. But given that she partnered with Skillshare and used their classes, something like Coursehorse doesn't seem totally outside the realm of possibility. Not a degree or credits. of course, but would still be something for herself, for her own interests...learning for the sake of learning.

All that said, I know I'm not the only one who finds it hilarious how poorly Michelle and Jill's comments on this topic have aged. I don't think they ever expected her to be leading this kind of life. Obviously it's not a huge deviation, she's still an ultra conservative Christian with an ultra conservative pastor husband, taking part in the family reality show, but I really think they probably expected her to marry someone who would work for/with Jim Bob and stick close to home.

Finally, I wonder if The Master's Seminary is also looking for a boost from Jeremy. They have had their accreditation suspended for lack of diversity in hiring (women), a messy lack of response to a rape on campus, favoring wealthy donors, nepotism, etc. Grace Community Church does have its own private school, though, for Felicity.

Where did you see about the school?

I think she's also made multiple references to loving to visit NYC, if I'm not mistaken. I think Jeremy also mentioned that they both love New York.

Big city or small, I think Jinger's always been pretty clear in her introverted way that she's a city person. As a fellow city person, I've always had a soft spot for her because of that. I thought due to her fundie lifestyle and Jill's "contentment" comment she'd never actually make it out of Arkansas, so I'm happy for her. While definitely not "free" yet, it seems like she's the closest to living her desired lifestyle given her upbringing. Maybe this move will help her grow.

I live in a big city that has a lot of different neighborhoods. Neighborhood cultures can vary greatly, but even when you stick to your own neighborhood bubble you can't completely avoid mixing with other areas. That's the nature of being in a city, imo. So just because their new neighborhood is conservative doesn't mean they won't interact with other parts of the city.

Ok, so when will we consider Jinger "free"? Never been to LA but I'm pretty certain it's a large city. Does anyone know of any popular fundies there? That Cooper guy is the only one I can think of at the moment.

Between Living in LA and visiting JV’s kin on the east coast, there will be very little time for AR.

Interesting that the 2 seemingly closest Duggar sibs have set up their lives so far from one another.
