Excellent op-ed about Pompeo on HuffPo. 

First, some background. Pompeo isn't stupid, but he's, you know, stupid.  He graduated first in his class at West Point, left the Army after five years with a rank of Captain, and graduated from Harvard Law.  He was head of CIA for a year-ish before Sec of State.

He was confirmed as Sec. of State by a relatively narrow margin (57–42) -- some Dems defaulted and voted yes.  He was a Tea-Party congressman from Kansas, is a climate change denier and Islamaphobe. 

The author of this opinion piece, Richard North Patterson, refers to Pompeo as Trump's global eunuch, among other things.  It's long, and primarily covers NATO, the Middle East and Korea. Worth a read if you want to get caught up on such things. 

Anyway, this op-ed lays out how Pompeo is flailing about as Sec. of State while sucking up to Trump, as one may guess from the title: Mike Pompeo Is The Spineless Personification Of Donald Trump’s Nihilist Foreign Policy

Mattis is out as Sec. of Defense on Dec. 31, and Pompeo is dispatched on Jan 8 to try to keep the Middle East balance and military alliances Mattis originally put together re: Turkey, Kurdish Alliance w/ US in Syria, Saudi Arabia/MBS, Yemen cease fire, Iran, Israel, UAE, Qatar from falling apart.  Trump managed to fuck up and destabilize the entire US Middle East policy in a matter of days.

I can't imagine what's going on right now on the ground in Syria -- with our troops trying to sort out WTAF US policy with the Kurds, who are realistically facing genocide from Erdogan.
