ETA: I have been scanning the blog and corners on courtship and "no touch" for J&E is all I see. Well, and very buried comments congratulating Christopher and Sarah!

It's also possible that they do have another church on the sly; large churches often have Saturday evening services and/or lots of small groups that meet in homes. I don't think it's likely but one can hope.

They may also want to keep the newborn away from a congregation that doubtless includes lots of runny-nosed children and probably not an insignificant number of "the unvaccinated" Maybe they are just temporarily attending services at the Steve's Church of the Elderly

And who would worship a god like that?

(A friend of mine has the same thing. Her child was born at 25 weeks, and is now a happy, healthy kid. But he will be an only child because they are not going through that again.)

A thing I often wonder about in regard to relatively intelligent people who also believe in sky daddy.

A good many churches here have multiple services on Sunday.

I don't think so either. And I really don't think a claim like Teri wondering if Susannah's passing was due to eschewing a no-touch courtship should be made without some evidence to back it up. "IIRC correctly" doesn't cut it. Some time researching the blog should be done before spreading such a thing.

Let's not forget that Steve believes God struck him down for an unnamed offense (I'm guessing drinking a beer or looking at porn) and he suffered in pain until god released him.

I don't have this reference at hand but I will be search it tomorrow if no one else finds it. As I recall je was struck in pain and couldn't leave the basement for days.

I have been pretty deep into Maxwellia and read every single thread here and I never recall this. Maxwells were actually my gateway to FJ. I am not as versed in the Corners as @Palimpsest but that just does not sound like Teri.

I agree. I have a freakish memory for all things Maxwell and I never recall them saying anything so awful. They were heartbroken when Susannah died. They certainly didn’t blame her parents; they mourned with them.

I remember that too, though I doubt it was beer or porn. He said it was something most people don’t even think is bad, just God told him in particular that he wasn’t supposed to do it.

I do wonder what it was, though. A skipped workout? An extra animal cracker?

He accidently went into a fabric store and saw all of those buttons, many of which were contrasting.

Yeah, yeah, that’s what he told people. In actuality he found the last of Teri’s Pepsi stash in the basement and went on a carbonated caffeine bender. I’m guessing there’s a half-Bath in the basement... ?

I see Joshua Bontrager is shilling Young Living. He is so creepy.

He’s just helping his wife. She’s doing most of the shilling.

I find it interesting that the MLMs are mostly done by the wives in MANY fundie families while the husband preaches/grifts. I just find it fascinating that these women are so against working mothers yet they are all working. And possibly more than their husbands. It’s become so popular in fundie circles.

Joshua Bont just admitted that he and Cassidy didn't have chaperones when they were dating, with their parents' blessing. He thanks his parents for trusting them enough, which sounds like a slight dig at the chaperone-enforcing families.

I know the Maxwells believe in chaperones, so I wonder if that was a tension point with Chelsea, She seemed to travel alone to Kansas quite a bit to visit John during their courtship. They would work on his house alone IIRC.

John would not have been allowed to do something if Steve did not approve. I am even sure there is a tension point. I really have not seen anything to prove that.  I think it is more that they just are not used to having a DiL who is as forward facing and public as they are so they have not adjusted in their reactions.

I’ve always suspected the Bons were not strict chaperones. They just don’t seem like the type to waste their time constantly chaperoning adults. I’m sure John and Chelsy were often around someone in the family when they were together. However if they went for a walk outside, I really doubt the Bons would find a sibling to go watch them.

I don't remember any of the Maxwell boys having Bates and Duggar style chaperoning. Does anyone else?

It's true, I ran a search of the word chaperone on their blog and found nothing. Maybe they were like the Bonts and trusted their sons with some alone time before marriage.

I have my doubts that they would allow the same for their daughters though. Steve will forever be lurking in their shadow, never letting them out of sight.

I remember that when Nathan was going to propose to Melanie, he got permission from both is parents and the Mahers to be alone with her for dinner and the rest.  He set up a table for two in his house and the rest is history.

I think that the Maxwells are so terrified of being alone with the opposite sex before marriage that they rigidly police themselves.  Steve accomplished his mission there.:annoyed:

Ehhhhh — just because they don’t mention it doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist!!

Wasn’t it Nate and Melanie who received special dispensation to be alone together in Nate’s just-completed, remodeled house for him to propose?

IIRC — and I may not! — the house is either across the street or next-door to The Fathership AND he had arranged Precious Moments figurines and candles around the place to set the mood.  Also, they had an understanding that the couple would emerge after a specifically brief time, alone together Chez Nate.

I’d look it up but I have a chore I must get done ASAP.

ETA: @Granwych, jinx! And thanks for the Maher info. I’d started to wonder if they’d been invited.

Yup, the Mahers got permission and invitations.  Their daughter who spoke Spanish was in charge of issuing drink orders at the rehearsal dinner.

I haven't seen people get their panties in knots over stupid stuff as often as the Maxwell's do.  The confusion over Sprites, Cokes, or whatever softdrinks ordered didn't doom the dinner.  They really didn't have much to post about then, and they still don't now.

He put Precious Moments figurines on the table, IIRC.

I'm sure there is something more important that could occupy the brain space which that strange factoid currently takes up.

EDITED to add, by jove, I was right!

The Mahers don't seem to be as strict with their other daughters, from what little I know of them. But if Melanie is the oldest girl, that makes sense. A lot of fundies seem to relax the rules with their younger kids. I have seen this with large families in general. The younger kids get to do all kinds of stuff that the older kids never would have been allowed to do because by that point, the parents are exhausted and just don't want to be bothered anymore. Or else these were the Maxwells' rules, not necessarily the Mahers'.

It’s exactly what happened with my Dad. He was the first and my grandparents were crazy strict with him. By the time their 4th kid was in high school, she did whatever she pleased. They admitted they were just tired by the time their last was a teen. The Bateses are another good example. Zach seems to resent the fact that his littlest brothers get away with murder. I bet they were quite strict with him.

I understand that he gave her the key to indicate that the house was now hers, too.  but in the ordinary world where I live, offering a key is generally interpreted as “spend the night any time” or “let’s live together first.”  The Maxwells would have palpitations over that.

If anyone proposed to me over a table he had decorated with Precious Moments figurines, I would stand up, turn around, walk out the door, and never look back.

I'd probably call an anonymous tipoff line about a possible lead about serial killers in the area.

Precious Moments figurines just scream "I have a pile of corpses in my basement".

Well Rufus Bless!!  Precious Moments figures are expensive. I knew a few people who’ve collected them; I never did because they’re too cutesy/corny for my taste.  I googled them just now, and most of the current ones are $35-60.
