In other news, Charlie Bowers has an Instagram now, and he's also selling Young Living.

I find this fascinating because I though essential oils was the exclusive province of fundy wimmin. Also, I was in a TJ Maxx (which I believe is TK Maxx in Europe?) and there were various essential oils for sale in the cash register aisle.  I've seen them at Bed Bath & Beyond & Wegman's too. So I don't understand why on earth I need to buy them online from someone?

Also, @Aithuia, I want to make "too jet-lagged for Jesus" my new location : )

My husband and I went to Rome for two weeks for not much more than this is costing (per person, not total). We spent some more, obviously, on food, tours, and gifts, but we were able to get airfare and a decent hotel for two weeks.

These girls should save and go to Rome.

Hold on... you guys spent around $500 for 2 return tickets to Rome from the US and a 2-week hotel stay? That seems too good to be true!

I honestly don’t understand why anyone buys anything from MLMs. You can almost always find the same kind of stuff online without the middle main (the poor fundie MLM seller). I suppose MLMs made more sense back in the day. When online shopping with free shipping wasn’t so common.

My guess is that if Allison felt she had a choice, she would have flown to KS right after the baby was born.

According to fundie wiki, these are the 2 living locations of the sisters. Chelsy is in Kansas, and Alison in Iowa. It would prob be more practical/conveneient for Alison (and family) to take a 5 hour drive rather then fly. As Jermajesty suggested, Alison's schedule was prob preoccupied with the family band.

Yes, they were on tour when he was born.

But think of all the evangelizing they could do for the lovely young Italian men! They could save them from hell, in the cafes, in the nightclubs, on the beaches, on the back of a Vespa....... Why, dropping an E or two with them would really open their hearts to hearing God’s word......

They’ve had a few breaks in the schedule since he was born. It’s more practical than flying to Switzerland for a single girls conference lol.

I don't know which is more disgusting, Mexican hot dogs or dating your brother.

I had to google Mexican hot dog and, to be honest, they don't sound any more disgusting than the "Seattle Dog". Because at least they have bacon. mmmm. Bacon.

The Bowers family loves to brag about their business acumen. Surely they must realize that having at least five people in their immediate family peddling these (snake) oils would be a horrible idea. I can easily believe that they would scam people, but honestly don't understand how they think they'll make any money off of it. Maybe constantly moving around the country helps them find new suckers to sign up as well as spouses for their children?

And @HereticHick If I were able to travel as often as I dream of, I'd be way too jet-lagged for Jesus! :)

That Iowa/Leavenworth trip might be rather long and roundabout right now due to flooding.

I can't imagine that $225 per attendee will even cover the cost of the retreat for Allison. She may be getting the venue at cost, but I doubt it's free, and groceries in Switzerland are NOT cheap, plus picking up attendees at Zurich airport, the activity supplies, and all the little extras she likes to throw in like a fancy coffee bar. She's going to have her own travel expenses (airfare, ground transportation, a few days' accommodation and food if she arrives ahead of time to prep, maybe some sightseeing after), and I don't think she's going to make enough to cover those.

This whole retreat puzzles me: the costs, the fact that it is in Europe and people have to travel across continents only to pray and drink fancy coffee for three days and the apparent Switzerland connection that Allison seems to have that was never mentioned before.

On one hand I really want this retreat to happen just to see who could afford to attend and on the other hand I doubt she will get enough girls to pay the price and travel on their own across the world. Some of these SAHDs can hardly run errands without a male headship! Traveling to liberal/socialist/heathen Europe? Sure!

I think Alison wants to go on vacation in Europe. However, fundie maidens can't be allowed to prance around Europe without a male headship UNLESS they are going for some Godly purpose ie a mission trip. With this retreat she gets to pretend it is all for Jesus. Even if not enough girls attend, she can still go. She has a friend to travel with and a place to stay so while it will not be a cheap vacation it will likely be a nice one.

Totally agree. As she writes, "So, my dear friend, Priscilla (pictured above), has relatives in Switzerland and has been there many times. This retreat is her vision, and I am so very honored to get to be a part of it!"

Basically, she's going to Switzerland with her friend Priscilla to visit Priscilla's relatives. Probably Priscilla has some family members--perhaps grandparents--who have agreed to clear out of their house for a long weekend if Priscilla and Alison actually convince any other gals to come along. Probably some family member has a car to loan the girls during their visit.

Every time I see this I think “how much fundy crap would I tolerate for a free/cheap trip to Europe?” So hard to say. I think at a minimum I’d need to get it out of the way first - so then I could do me.

But... idk, if it was totally free...I mean, at this stage in life I might fake baptism to get my ass over there. It really depends.

Do you think there might be a connection between Allison’s super-expensive “retreat” and the Botkins’ failed conference in Hungary? Maybe she was going to be involved some way, or she’s riding the coattails of yet another failed Botkin venture and trying to glean attendees from the crowd that would have gone to the Botkin’s shindig.

I waiver on this one. On one hand, it's easier for me to put up with bullshit as I get older and less impatient and irritable. On the other hand, as my patience has increased, so, too, has my tendency to say whatever I'm thinking. So it's a double-edged sword. I could put up with it, but there'd be A LOT of shade and snarky comments.

The vibe I'm getting from this is also very much along the lines of "Let's do something to make those married girls really, really JEALOUS! Sure, they get to be married and adults and have weddings and sex and cute babies, but we SINGLE GIRLS get to go to a CHATEAU!"

ETA: Given the context, I'm kind of into it.

You don't have to hang out with all that fundie maidens. Paris is a 3 hour train ride away. I'll pick you up at the airport and we'll get lost in Montmartre. I now a sweet little bar there that offers a wonderful Muscadet!

Could someone give me more information about the Botkins' failed conference? Seems like their brand is really going down at a fast rate.

@Dominionatrix I think you nailed it.

Well if I can plot a scheme that allows me to somehow ditch the fundies once I arrive and find all the European FJers...that works!

I have some space in my flat. [emoji56]

As for the housing, since it‘s a chalet I assume it‘s owned by someone she knows so I guess she‘ll get it for free. You can keep the costs for food down by shopping at certain shops like Aldi or Lidl and take only certain brands. But I doubt they have one there. So maybe they buy all the groceries at once. Because the „normal“ supermarkets like Migros, Coop or even Volg are expensive.

But I don‘t get it. The States have mountains too? Why ever leave the continent when your own country has that much to offer? I just don‘t get it.

She could not have picked a more expensive country in Europe. Its absolutely beautiful there but soooooooooo expensive! Even FRance or Spain would have some cheap n' chearful holiday resorts.

I think you're right.  Whether or not it's conscious, there's a pretty clear divide in fundie circles between all the single ladies and the "mamas."  I grew up fundie and married a guy who also grew up fundie, but a slightly different strain.  To many of you, we'd probably still be considered fundie-lite, but we're slowly breaking away.  Longwinded introduction aside, once I got married I had no place in the social world of my fundie church (we plan to leave but are waiting until we move this summer).  The single women have small-scale versions of Allison's retreat frequently (movie nights, dinners, etc.) and the women with children have play dates.  As someone actively trying not to get pregnant right now (my husband and I want to have time as a couple before we add kids into the mix), I don't fit anywhere.  A retreat like Allison's sounds kinda fun (I actually went to one of her retreats back in my fundie days - other than the gender-conforming stereotypes, it wasn't that bad), but it's not an option.

Sorry for the rambling response, but the way the fundie world compartmentalizes everyone is really getting to me today and that rant felt great. :)

What’s funny is that I felt a little bit like you in the mainstream world! In my non fundie mainstream circles, I felt a little left out when I was married with no kids. I had a few friends who were in long term relationships and no kids. They were great to hang out with. But it was a little weird sometimes when I would hang out with friends who had kids. They would all just chat up a storm about pregnancy, babies, and stuff while I sat there quiet. I had little to add. And then my single friends would often want to go to the bars and party but I wasn’t really into that. I imagine what your dealing with is magnified times 100. I at least had some childless married couples to hang out with. You probably don’t have any since most of the married women in your church get pregnant right away. I hope you find a church that is a better fit when you move!
