Joy and Austin 25: Guest Starring Grandpa Munster

My husband missed my oldest daughter's first birthday. He left for a short deployment on her birthday. He did give her a kiss goodbye as he left that morning but she was sleeping. We both missed our son's first birthday. It ended up being the best day to move so he and his sister stayed with my mother in law that weekend while we moved. We did stop in for dinner (we had been living an hour north of MIL and were moving about an hour south of her) but he was sleeping. Poor kiddo ended up with a trip to urgent care for his birthday with a nasty virus and a double ear infection. We were finally all together for my younger daughter's birthday, but she was also sick that day.

We do try to make birthdays a big deal in general, it just never seemed to work out for their 1st birthdays though. The Duggars don't seem to put much value on any of their birthdays though, for the kids or adults, except maybe Jim Bob and Michelle.

I had to spend my 11th birthday at Yom Kippur services (which, for those not in the know, are three hours long and extremely solemn). I tell my parents that that equated to at least two therapy sessions.

I read the flyer for the retreat to my husband. His first question: "Why are all the speakers male?" Oh honey, I do not have time to explain the fundies theology before Mass. He also enjoyed hearing the seminar topics and proclaimed "Wow those people make the Catholic church feel progressive" ? (Jury is out on if he was joking or not)

On the site for the conference they have pictures of all the pastors who will be speaking, with their names below. The creepy thing is that every single pastor's wife is also in the picture with them, unnamed.  The captions really make it seem like the couple is just the man.

These retreats are a ministry of United Baptist Church of Springfield, MO. It's an "independent Baptist" KJV only church.

It's so weird to me that she says it's just the two of them, when in reality they're in seminars full of other couples all day...not my idea of a romantic time alone with my partner. I'll also never understand why fundies feel the need to go to marriage conferences/workshops when they've been married a hot second. If anyone I knew in this "season of life" did that, I'd think they were unhappy in their marriage.

I know people who were born in April. Sometimes their birthdays are during Passover.

Ok so it looks like Gideon is an average size 1 year old. Have not seen a pic in a while. Just assumed he was bigger because he was BIG at birth. Love that smile. Hope he enjoyed stuffing his lil face with bday cake!

Does anyone else see a resemblance between Gideon and Sam? I'd never seen it before because most other pics of Gideon are with a full smile. But I do see the resemblance this time.

That retreat looks awful and interesting at the same time. The helpmeets should be given recognition for their contributions, because we all know they did/do MUCH MORE WORK than the headships.

I was born at the end of December. During High school and University years I spent most my birthdays studying or taking exams.

Same here - limited birthday celebrations in grade school because everyone had holiday obligations, then exams on my birthday from 9th grade (14th birthday) through undergraduate and graduate degree #1 (23rd birthday). Then repeat for four years while I earned graduate degree #2 (31st-35th birthdays). Now I’m done with school, but in a career with 3-4 work-related holiday parties each year, so there is inevitably a work obligation on my birthday.

Well I wouldn't be sure that Michelle knows when all her offspring were born. Joy may know for now, but the more babies that come, the less "joyous" the event will be.

First birthdays are more for the parents! My parents had a huge party for me and all my cousins. I stuffed my face full of cake and so did everyone else! It was great, all the older kids had a good time and all the little kids wore themselves out! Do I remember it? Nah, but the pictures of poor confused little me trying to figure out what to do with a cake are hilarious.

Because nothing refreshes the romance in a relationship like listening to some middle aged pastor tell you not to touch your junk.

I am pretty sure the Duggars prescribe to the  traditional mindset that the relationship between the parents is paramount and mothers first priority is her husband. That’s not necessarily a Fundie or particularly Christian belief though.  Like your kids just happened to be yours because sex happened at the right time  but you chose your husband and he chose you.

Yeah, my mother subscribes to this and explained it as "you're only temporarily living with your children, but your spouse is with you for life".  I don't think that sentiment is entirely wrong, but fundies tend to take it to an extreme.

I have an April birthday, so Passover occasionally falls on mine and when I was a kid, I used to only get a Passover cake for my birthday. Now when my birthday is during Passover, I have a real cake to celebrate either before or after Passover, and sometimes I'll have a Passover cake day of.

Unrelated to this, Gideon seems pretty small to me in most pictures they post of him. I'm curious what his height/weight are--he was so big when he was born but now he seems fairly petite. Joy's pretty small too, right? Maybe he takes after his mother.

I've had my suspicions about the "research" that the Family Research Council (the organization who employed Josh Duggar) does.  For the sake of families, of course.

I love Jessa's defense of her sisters, she is very maternal, I see a lot of myself in Jessa, Motherhood made us both seem to blossom.  I love her devotion to her family and her fierce protectiveness. As horrible as their beliefs are you can see that some of these siblings rally love each other.

As for Joy & Austin being gone most of the day on G's birthday, while I wouldn't have done it, and most of us here wouldn't have either, these folks don't seem to place as much importance on things like birthdays, or holidays.  Jessa was OK with Jinger getting married on Spurgeon's 1st birthday.  I would have been LIVID if my sister got married on my child's 1st birthday, maybe a subsequent one, but not the 1st. I think it is because WE the parents want/need the party the child doesn't have a clue.

I really think it’s because most of us have very few firsts because we have very limited numbers of children! It’s very different for people who treat children and adding another like most of us treat weekly grocery shopping.

Is this the friend that will hide your porn from your parents if you die?

Gosh, that sure sounds like a sexy funtime weekend.  They really know how to make a weekend away from the kids sound worse than having your wisdom teeth out.

The fact that they're advertising "time alone with your sweetheart" is so weird. Is it common NOT to have alone time with your spouse at these things? Is this secretly a fundie swingers' retreat?

I'm early September. When I was younger, school started the day after Labor Day. (US Labor Day, 1st Monday in September.) My first day of 1st grade was my 6th birthday. Then, they changed the schedule and school started the last week of August. So, I got to see my friends on my birthday, but we were all still getting used to the school routine again.

The first college I attended started on the Tuesday after Labor Day, so I turned 18 on my first day of college. It wasn't awful, and I have some interesting memories because of it. (And a good pun--I was born on Labor Day. :pb_wink: )
