If you haven't hit up the Youtube Dark Shadows clips, there's a hilarious one of the Twelve Days of Christmas... with them hunting in the woods (at night of course) for the tree, etc..

I just watched that. :pb_lol: I'm surprised there aren't more Dark Shadows fan-made videos out there. Maybe I'll have to learn to better edit videos and make them myself.

@Rachel333 It was just a response to another poster who found out about a surprisingly large Native American ancestry being tagged and the limitations on DNA testing (no differentiation between North or South), not a political statement. Just convenient since Senator Warren led to the Cherokee Nation having to release a response due to media inquiry, as that is her claimed heritage, tribal affiliation claimed or not. How it works isn't a common knowledge point, especially for those outside the US.

My dad and I both got an ancestry test done recently. He's 100% irish, I'm about 49% irish. The rest of me is a mix of mediterranenan, and apparently different parts of Africa. We're both in the top 60 percentile for neanderthal DNA, which is actually a cool fact.

These tests can actually be useful, as I learned I carry the gene for celiac disease. I've been having stomach issues the past few years, and got the blood test done today. If it turns out I have celiac disease, taking an ancestry test for fun could have saved my intestines lol.

@Gillyweed That is interesting--good luck to you.  So glad that you found out!  :5624797ec149a_hug1:

What other things do they test for, other than ancestry?  I didn't know they could test for things like celiac disease.  I'm guessing my DNA would show a high percentage of crazy!  We are a very healthy family, but a fair amount of alcoholism and crazy . . .

They can also test for "traits", although it's not very accurate and just says "you're more likely to have...". Mine said I'm more likely to have straight hair, no dimples, have freckles and be able to tolerate lactose. It's completely wrong lol. It did, however, accurately say that I'm a morning person, I have brown eyes,  I remain the same weight no matter if my diet is high in fats or not, and that I am more likely to drink a lot of caffeine.

Healthwise, it can show you if you have the breast cancer gene, and also if you carry parkinsons or alzheimer's. I opted not to find those out, though.

(The health tests cost extra, and aren't offered at ancestry. I got mine from 23andme)

Oh I know, that wasn't aimed at you specifically, I'm just tired of all the misinformation being spread about Warren by Republicans. Trump repeated it all in a tweet this morning and actually said, about the Cherokee Nation, that "Even they don't want her," which is incredibly offensive.

I mean, at worst Elizabeth Warren made too much about a family story. She never lied about anything. Meanwhile Trump lies about everything and constantly displays his racism and misogyny but it gets mostly forgotten because there's just so much of it and there's a new controversy daily, while whoever ends up running against him in 2020 will have every minor error discussed in detail. It's just so frustrating.

I have an ancestor named Collins... my sister and I are sure that the Collins family curse has descended to us..

Collins? Barnabas Collins? Dark Shadows? Anyone? Bueller??

The original one with Jonathan Frid as Barnabas and the two movies made from it. The first one was better. Kate Jackson (Charlie's Angels) was in the second. I refuse to watch the Johnny Depp movie.

I did wonder about her DNA my mom's branch is suppose to have Native American blood, we know the tribe and pretty sure we know who it it was about 4 or 5 generations back but it didn't show up in the Ancestry.com DNA, I know a lot of people claim it but all you had to do was take one look at my grandfather.

There were two other surprises from Ancestry.com the Iberian peninsula and Northern Finland/Russia. The latter seemed possible giving my father's Norwegian and Swedish roots. The other while no one knew anything about it. There was a possibility with my grandmother's biological father which we know nothing about and have never had an interest in finding out. But then a few months ago Ancestry.com sent me an updated results and both of those went away.

I'd love to do sometime of testing I think its call genetic testing but I'm not sure. One where it tests everything health wise and what if any comes from mother or father but not just me but on all my female cousins on my dad's side. Two of my cousins and I have ended up with problems with muscles, nerves, although both ended up with different diagnosis something with rhumenatoid, lyme disease, and other issues. One tried to go vegetarian because her body couldn't handle it, my stomach has problems breaking down vegetables and other hard stuff, while the other cousin has a specific diet she has to stay on or she has problem which I do but a different problem. Its interesting that the three of us have suddenly developed medical problems in ways similar to each other but different. I'd love to have us all tested see what else it all would reveal or what it is on my dad's side that's caused the problems. Is it the genes? Why is it just the three of us girls and none of the boys have had any thing like it? I'm not sure how to do it or if insurance would pay for it.

@JordynDarby5 It seems like most everyone who used Ancestry had some changes to their results. Sorry to hear about the three of you having a hard time health wise. ❤️ I think your specialist would have to order genetic testing if there's reason to suspect that it a root cause AND if it will change your treatment plan. I believe the insurance threshold requires both and all of you would have to go through it separately. Some of DNA over the counter companies will do a health test, but I believe the results are pretty general. Though Vitagene does diet, exercise and supplement information based off a combination DNA and saliva analysis.

Genetics wise figuring out which parent it comes from is complicated in a lot of situations, without it being on a sex chromosome or being a known disease on one side. The technology is growing rapidly, but is far from perfect, especially with problems that present with a cluster of symptoms.

If you live near a university with a quality medical school, or near a research hospital, there are often opportunities for free genetic testing, and follow-up with genetic counselors.

I loved the original, and I didn't want to see the Johnny Depp version. But then I heard it was meant as an homage to the original series, which Depp claimed he loved as a child. It's over the top, and it's different, but there are cameos by Kathryn Leigh Scott, (Josette), Lara Parker, (Angelique), David Selby. (Quentin) and Mr. Frid himself, at the "Happening" where Alice Cooper performs. What Depp does as Barnabas is actually kind of funny. I could've done without the Barnabas/Angelique sex scene, though.

We watch the old and sometimes the new. We've never watched the remake with Ben Cross.

I'm a fan of the colour pink, but in the heavily gendered fundie world, I like seeing Felicity wearing plenty of things that arent pink. Plus most of her head coverings look practical, like they're actually made to keep her warm and comfortable instead of being feminine accesories.

I thought that might be the case. Thanks for the information.

That might be a possibility I'll look into our university to see if there's anything like that. Thanks.

It's not even that girly. :my_confused: It's a white pom pom on a hat. Here's one of many that comes up via google listed as a men's hat:

I also read recently that there are ancient ancestral DNA similarities between Scandinavians and native Americans. I will link the article if I can find it.
Oh, and archaeological evidence strongly links Celtic cultures to Siberia/ancient Asia!
We are all connected :)

That might explain the commonality of the epicanthic folds that many of my Native and Scandinavian friends share.

She is cute.

He is not of Sami heritage (the indigenous population of northern Norway, Sweden, Finland and part of northern Russia)? One of my SILs has a Sami grandmother and looks very Sami and she has been asked by an American if she is Native American and plenty of people have asked her if she is part Asian (Chinese or Thai). She has dark brown hair, brown eyes with a fold, darker skin than the average Swede but a more typically European facial structure and nose. Sami people do vary a lot in looks but there are more who have dark hair, dark skin and narrow eyes among them than among the Swedish population. The variation doesn't seem to be totally down to intermarriage, at least the light hair seems to have been a constant feature throughout history and it is even a theory that Sami and Nordic genes together may have favored this color in Scandinavia to a higher degree than in the rest of the world but it is unproven.

People will know she is a girl because her name Felicity is on her hat. Can't have anyone mistaking her for a boy. The horror!

Last week my son found the most beutiful piece of clothing he has seen in his 4,5 years of life. A bright pink, ruffled dress with Sky, his favourite Paw Patrol. He made the biggest eyes and begged me to buy it. Since I’m neither fundie nor particularly fond of  gendernorms I did.

He has worn it several times and he cried when it was dirty. He is so happy in it. ”I look so pretty mum!” He also has long hair, because he wants to and absolutely everyone who has seen him has obviously thought he is a girl, including a relative of ours.

He doesn’t want to be a girl, he just likes the dress and he doesn’t care what other people think. He knows that it’s mostly girls who wear dresses but for him there is nothing wrong with looking like a girl. A dress is just a piece of clothing, pink is just a colour.

We don’t care as long as he’s happy and no one is mean to him about it. I hope he keeps standing up for what he likes for ever. If it’s still ruffles and pink when he’s 25, so be it. Today he chose spiderman socks and a pink top with a tiger. He’s pretty much my fashion role model. ?
