Lady Lydia: Still Living in an Alternate Universe

No lie, the idea of "rain tea" (If I understand it, you set out cups to collect rain, and then drink it) sounds like a fun thing to do with Mini Fille. As for the other lady with the wedding dresses...well, it's not to my taste. BUT, if you happen to have extra wedding vintage wedding dresses (she bought them for her daughter to try on, right?), then why not find something else to do with them. Is it my taste? Nope. Nope nope nope. But it's creative and could be fun. This lady doesn't seem condescending (like Lydia), just supremely wacky. I like wacky.

I just had a weird thought. Nearly everybody we discuss has had one or two people who know or have known them comment, sometimes friends, sometimes family members. Yet, aside from Lydia herself, who popped in for a couple of comments, we have had *nobody* who knows Lydia or her family members comment. I wish we had an "outsiders" view of her. I have heard some scurrilous rumors about her on the web, and they're believable enough, but I'd really like to hear from someone who knows her better to confirm or deny.

We have (or had) a member here who lives in the area and has confirmed that Mr. Sherman pastors a real church and that Lydia and her house exist.  I don't think they ever darkened the door of the church though.  Yes, there are some unpleasant and unconfirmed rumors about her (I posted a link above to one site) but I try to judge Lydia solely by what she writes on her blog.  That is bad enough.

Are we sure Lydia is real? I only say that because of the her horrifically decorated house. I can’t imagine any man, whether fundamentalist or a normal relationship guy, would live in that tacky house.

I can't imagine inflicting all those ruffles, lace, pinkness, and floral crap on Mr. P.  However, like Lydia, I make most of the decorating choices in my house.   I do run them past Mr.P and ask his opinion.  He isn't very interested and usually agrees straight away to my suggestions.  He doesn't even object to the purple bathroom!  :P

I suspect Mr. Sherman spends most of his time at the church or at work.  I also like to imagine he has a potting shed in the yard with a big padlock on the door where Lydia is "not allowed" to go.  He spends his down time in there, sitting comfortably in a wheelbarrow,  wrapped in a manly snuggie, whilst perusing his secret stash of porn, watching action movies, and drinking whisky.

Perhaps this snuggie:

I got news for Lady Lydia: most women the age to be attending the reunion probably would not be showing a lot of skin.  Age can do some not nice things to our skin and bodies particularly if we've spent much time in the sun.  Us older women might try to hide that when it's not necessary to show it.  Also, doo-wop was popular in the 50s so why on earth would they be playing it for less than a 60th reunion?  I mean, I love doo-wop but I wouldn't expect to hear it at a reunion of the Class of '73.  Three Dog Night, yes.  Doo-wop, never.

Lydia is having a great time on the road trip. They have been to Walmarts and crummy motels they hated. They went to the reunion and she was pleasantly surprised that the ladies were dressed up nicely for the party, and that they said Amen when someone finished praying. However, the band didn't play tasteful doo-wop like she'd have preferred so she sat in the car for the rest of the evening and hopes to recover from the brain trauma soon.

Doo-wop? That was like mid-50's music. Early 70's? Ummm...Doors, Led Zep, Janis, Jimi, Black Sabbath, you know, the good stuff!

"Brain trauma"? The brain trauma that woman has is from being dropped on her head a few too many times as a baby. What a spoiled little brat...left her husband and sat in the car b/c they didn't play the music she preferred.

That particular corner of Lane County doesn't have a lot of people who read, or who know how to use the internet, so we may be SOL unless we hear from someone in another part of the world who knew her back in the day. I would love to hear from the two gentlemen who run the lovely tea room and antique shoppe in the next town over from the Shermans.

To be fair, it was Mr. Lydia's reunion and he's 75, apparently, so he would have graduated 57 or so years ago. Which is an odd anniversary to be celebrated. So maybe he graduated quite young and this was the 60 year reunion? So, Elvis, The Everly Brothers, Chubby Checker, Connie Francis, the Drifters. . .but Elvis most of all.

If her husband is about 75, he graduated high school early 60s. That was no the doo-wop era. It also wasn't any more romantic than today, as she claims.

Does anyone know how old Lydia actually is?

They may have combined years - Lydia mentions a 1962 graduate. My mom's high school did that - She, her one year older sister and two years old brother went to the same reunion because there weren't enough people in their individual classes to hold a reunion.

This is a great rabbit hole in which to have fallen.  I love to laugh but life has not been funny the last few months.  It's been a lot of hell.  I needed this.

I give a big shout out to all those who make me laugh.  There are so many of you.

Music from  early 60s would have been things like the Peppermint Twist.

And the Shirelles.  And Sam Cook....

I was fascinated with Penny and her house when someone first posted about her a few years back. Through reading her blog, the comments, and the links that she herself posted,  I discovered that she owned an antique store.  I just assumed that she found a lot of the stuff for her house while she was acquiring stock for her store.

Her house is definitely not for me, but Penny did figure out a way to turn her interests into a business.

Lady Lydia wanted doo-wop so here's some doo-wop for her:

The Coasters song "Poison Ivy" would blow LL's time mind if she knew it was about a girl with a STD.  And she really needs to watch The Flirtations sing "Mr Sandman".  I loved them singing it in the film Philadelphia.

I don't think she has the slightest idea what brain trauma is.  I do, and even though mine was not as severe as many other's or as severe as it could have been, it is not fun.  It's not easy to deal with.

That's something that seems to be fairly common among older people, one big reunion for all attendees instead of separate ones.  Mr. Briefly's mom went to one a few years back for the small school she would have graduated from, if she had actually finished school instead of dropping out to get married.  She was invited to it and she was glad she went. She said it was a lot of fun and that there were a lot of people that she was glad she got to see that were not in her graduation year.

I'm just enjoying the knowledge that ~*~laaaady~*~ lydz is still cosplaying the girl's section of the 2003 VF catalog. I guess it's theoretically possible to imagine a more pointless way to live your life, but I haven't yet found one. By all means, LL, carry on. I'm sure the God who gave you (something akin to) an intellect is very very impressed by your refusal to use it.

They went to Mexico, and saw Poncho Villa's statue and bought a teapot. The highlight of their day was Walmart with its paved parking lot.

Poncho Villa

Don't forget, her husband once met Poncho Villa's son.

Why this is important, I don't know - it's not as if he met Pancho Villa's son, after all.

That cake...what a tacky dust collector. My grandma would have loved it. She was known for spray painting things gold and hot gluing lace, ribbons and rose petals onto clearance home decor items.  She was the sweetest lady, but her taste in decorating was dreadful.

It looks great behind the glass doors of a china cabinet, on a pedestal cake plate.

If this monstrosity is suppose to "scent" your home, doesn't closing it up in a china cabinet sort of defeat the purpose?

Apparently in an exam pupils had to have a digital clock on display as they couldn’t read an analogue one. (This was a news story).

On her blog, she mentioned she got married in 1972, so if she was at least 18 when she got married, she’s at least 64 now.

Re high school reunions: I’m high school class of 1970. When the band started playing ‘50s standards at our 40th reunion, we damn near threw an insurrection and made them stop.

My oldest daughter who is turned 38 recently and I were talking about smartphones vs wristwatches.  We'd both rather wear a watch.  It's more convenient than having to haul your phone around all the time.  Besides my granddaughter is often watching episodes pf Peppa Pig on my daughter's phone.

Lady Lydia would probably suggest that you make several. Make an unscented one for your china cabinet, a scented one to display, and some heavily scented ones to terrorize your neighbors.  ?
