I think it’s more the skill of memorising large chunks of text (poetry, sonnets, soliloquies, etc.) that was heavily valued when I was at school in the ‘80s and ‘90s.

I agree that it would be impossible to get through medschool or a physics degree without memorising things (I did both, which is why I’m using those as particular examples) but memorising Schroedinger’s equation, hyperbolic trigonometry/calculus, or a whole load of drug names and interactions and doses, or whatever, is slightly different from memorising Ozymandius.

@Georgiana thank you for sharing Harlem whenever it seems appropriate. It was new to me when you shared it a few months ago, and I love, love, love it.

I find that exposure naturally burns things into my memory - Anglican liturgy, Carol Ann Duffy’s Valentine (which was one of the readings at my wedding), Atlas by U.A. Fanthorpe (read at my dad’s funeral)...

There are many instances where memorization is necessary. I am a lawyer and no way is anyone passing the bar without memorizing as much as possible. You can’t pass by being in the ballpark with an answer. The exam is not subjective. You need to have every element listed in your answer or you are going to get a very low score. You need to know every element to pass the multiple choice portion of the exam as well. You have about six weeks of bar prep to learn how to take the test in the manner the state bar expects. If you aren’t going to memorize, you might as well not take the exam because you are going to fail. Having general knowledge of the subject matter just means you get the honor of having to take the exam again.

As a Catholic, I love that I have the mass memorized as it’s very comforting. At Catholic school, we were never made to memorize scripture but we did memorize poems and passages from literature we would then analyze. I can still recite Langston Hughes’ Mother to Son poem and I still love it to this day. Some things I memorized because they were so profound they just stuck with me.

It hurts their reputation when things like that come out. The image of the nice smiling Christian doesn't jive (or attract followers) like an out of control Derick.

Just imagine what you think of when you think "Derick Dillard:

- No job by choice, except industrious posts on GoFundMe

- Awkward (Exhibit A: Publicly posted photo of his junk pushed into a table corner)

- Mommy defends him online when people are mean to him

- Does not particularly like babies... too manipulative

- Constantly obsessed with gay and transgender people... for comparison, way more posts about transgender and gay people than posts discussing the Bible

- Publicly accepts money from the man who sexually molested his wife

Does this sound like the Ideal Manly Christian Man that a conservative Christian church wants as their public face?

Oh, could the twitter lockdown be because Something big is going to drop? Some celebs do this when a negative story is about to come out. Derrick seems to love having an audience so I can’t see him going radio silent because he enjoys privacy.

It might be weird to you, but memorizing scripture is extremely typical for conservative Christians and people in other religions, like Islam where memorization is really emphasized. In the past it was normal for people to memorize other things too, like poetry.

I just don't think it's going to hurt Israel at this point to memorize scripture. I believe he's also being taught letters and other things so I really don't think he's being taught memorization only.

It would be nice if he were in a family that didn't put such importance on scripture, but he is, and there's a difference between "not ideal" and actively harmful. Of all the things about his upbringing that are harmful to him this just isn't it.

I don't think it's harmful to him, I just don't think it's age appropriate. He clearly has no idea what he's saying because he isn't developmentally ready to comprehend what it means. It would probably be better for him to have a better understanding of the meaning and than memorize it, but again, I don't think it's actively harming him.

I think the emphasis on memorizing the Bible goes hand in hand with biblical literalism. Imo that's why many Duggars can whip out verses but would be crush in an actual biblical debate. They aren't taught to think deeply about it.

Just want to clarify I don't think it's wrong to memorize things you actually want to memorize, like poetry or parts of the Bible. Hell, I have passages of Harry Potter memorized just from reading it so much. But teachers should teach for deeper understanding first, with memorization coming as a result, or if it's what the student wants. I have a feeling that Jill's lessons are going to miss that key point.

i went to Twitter to see if I was following him.

I'm not, but apparently he's tweeted ninety times in the past hour.

I'll see if I can grab a screenshot of where I saw that.

Never mind that was someone else named derick.

That all being said, memorization is actually a very poor method of obtaining useful knowledge.  Not only does it have an incredibly low rate of retention over time, it also is not generally stored in a way that makes the data contained useful or even available to the brain in problem solving. Memorization =/= learning.  Doesn't make it a useless skill, but it's not as important as many people think it is...especially in an age of modern technology where we can store information in devices instead of needing them stored in the brain.

You said it better than I could. This is what I learned as a teacher. Unfortunately, I think a lot of fundies homeschool their kids to memorize things and do little else, since thinking too deeply about their brand of Christianity creates problems. I have no reason to doubt that Jill, who was likely just taught to memorize herself, won't teacher her kids simple memorization.

I went to Catholic school for 8 years and I don't remember memorizing portions of the Bible other than the Commandments or the Beatitudes. And there was discussion about the meaning of them. Though we were told Adam and Eve were fact. You must be younger than me!

It's possible. I'm 27.

That's definitely often true. My younger sisters were heavily into Bible Quiz and were really good at it. They knew all these Bible verses but I was talking with them and realized they knew nothing about the Bible, like who Biblical scholars believe wrote it or how it was compiled. That's a huge weak spot in a lot of conservative Christian Biblical education, IMO. I took a Bible class at a fairly conservative Christian college and the class was actually excellent but it was startling to see how little most of the students knew despite having studied the Bible all their lives.

JDugg ought to start checking the JRod threads before making any moves.  It's alarming how much alike those two are, and I wonder if JRod was a lot like JDugg in her youth...?  It's definitely possible.

Anyways, if they HAD done so, they would have seen that locking down the "privacy" settings doesn't do a lick of good if you don't clean out your friends/followers.  Also, it really puts you in a bind when it comes to promoting your "ministry" and asking for donations.  Lots of good Christian folk don't have their own social media accounts, you know, so they can't follow you and THEN how are you supposed to get their money?!?

I bet we'll see a spike in blog postings as the Jills try to stay relevant...but in a way that doesn't allow for people to comment mean things that hurt their feels like facts and figures and their very own words from several years ago.

There have been various andedotes about skeptics knowing the Bible more than many (not all) Christians. I knowba handful of Christians who acknowledge to rarely, if ever reading the Old Testament.

Oh my Rufus. I just saw that Jill posted a video about attending a Ramadan "feast" at a local mosque. I don't have my headphones handy and don't want to subject my husband to this video... Has anybody watched it and cares to let us know what's going on? It's only 39 seconds, so hopefully that's not enough time for it to be TOO racist. Here's the link: https://www.dillardfamily.com/2018/05/iraqi-feast-at-the-mosque-during-ramadan/.

Okay, I just looked at the "recipe" you were talking about (here). What the actual fuck?! "Burritos" without a shred of any kind of veggie, but slathered in "sauce" that consists of canned cream of crap mushroom soup, sour cream and milk/cream? Yeah, I think I'll pass.

The video isn't bad. Jill has her friend say they're at the mosque eating an Iraqi feast for Ramadan. Jill says the food is really good. The friend thanks her and says she's glad to see Jill there. Jill comments that she has to show Jessa the food. She has the friend tell her what the food is (shawarma and biryani). Then she pans over to Sam (who makes a great face), he just woke up due to all the excitement.

Really hope Ofjill didn't tag along to Iftar. I shudder to think how he'd act. At least Jill can put up a facade of curiosity and politeness even if she believes the same odious shit he does.

Also, I'm getting real tired of their appropriation. "Tee hee I'm gonna eat your food and go to your parties, but if people like you flee violence and come to my country, I'll happily turn you away, tear your children away from you if you managed to make it here, and claim that you and everyone like you is a terrorist or criminal!"

I agree that it probably won't be private long. Can't feign persecution of a SuperChristian if all his hateful tweets only bounce around the walls of what will mostly just be an echo chamber full of huggers.

If the privacy change is in any way related to Cross Church like someone suggested, I imagine OfJill will resurface just about the same time the program ends and they don't offer him a position (assuming he can even stay private that long).

"We have decided to go another direction..."

"Cross Church didn't fire me. You can't get fired if you were never an employee."

"You have zero proof that I was pressured into making my account private. Temporarily limiting the size of my audience was always a part of our social media plan."

(Sorry, just thinking of what his responses to comments will be like...)

Wouldn't it be amazing if Jill's friend belongs to an evangelical group and is hoping to befriend the Dillards and save their souls by converting them to Islam? A girl can dream...

Either way, this is definitely an attempt to soften their image and counteract Derick's hardliner comments and idiotic tweets. At least Jill seems polite enough to not be cringeworthy.

You do this, and I fall asleep wondering if when I go to Wegmans the next day, there will be those great sugar cookies with icing.

Before I go to sleep I often think about how I will spend the money when I win a huge lottery win. Who I will share with, how much will go to savings, charity, spending? How will I hide it so people don’t threat me differently? Will I work? How much? Where I will buy houses is the most important part. If I get that far I decorate the houses too.

Once I’ve got my plan ready I’ll start buying lottery tickets. :D

It is possible that this is a special iftar celebration open to non-Muslims to show them what it's like. In that case, depending on the religious convictions of the organization, head-coverings aren't always required for non-Muslim women. However, I have only known of those kind of "open to all" iftar celebrations being held in large halls or someone's home, and not in mosques. So I'm not quite sure if this "no head covering for non-Muslim women" would apply during a celebration in a Mosque as well. But if it was a requirement I don't think Jill would have been let in without one, so I'm leaning towards "no head covering required for non-Muslim women".

I agree with your second part, but not necessarily with the first. I don’t think Jill is faking her curiosity - I think she’s genuinely curious about other cultures and cuisines. If she stopped with the conversion crap then she’d probably do fine.

But yeah. I think OfJill would be a massive vibe kill at a gathering like this. He may very well be nicer in person than he is online, but I just have this feeling that he’s probably be less capable of holding his tongue than Jill.

Agreed, I think Jill is curious about other cultures too, but I also find her very phony in how much she actually cares about them beyond trying their food. She wouldn't be there unless she was secretly hoping to convert some of them to her brand of Christianity.

And lol at OfJill's twitter being private.

I love baseball but I'm dreading the new season because the White Sox ownership is THE FUCKING WORST. I watched Dominican League Baseball (Lidom!) over the winter and fell in love with their joy, spirit, and exuberance. The broadcasts were in Spanish and my Spanish is pretty weak but I loved catching phrases and repeating them. Bombe! I'm sad about MLB and Commissioner Idiota's busywork rules. But I love baseball, always and forever.
I guess I don't have a point. Just bitching. Te amo mucho, Lidom!

Feeling ragey this morning. I have a doctor's appointment this afternoon in the hope of getting help for an ongoing injury. I went to a (different!!) doctor late last year who completely blew me off. He wouldn't do diagnostic testin, he refused to send me to a specialist, and he just told me to "take it easy" and "take ibuprofen." I'm hopeful for today's appointment but I'm also feeling a SEVERE amount of rage at that doctor from last year!

It is definitely strep skin infection. I am getting so damn tired and run down from this. Who the f would immagine being hospitalized freaking TWICE for a rash?
