In his FB post, Michael says "victims." Meaning more than one.

I had a (non-therapy, just casual!!!) conversation with a therapist who worked with pedophiles a while back and asked him about why we hear about so many children being abused. I wondered if that pedophilic population was growing exponentially. He said it isn't that there are so many more of them, it is just that those who molest are prolific. They have many, many victims. They have multiple molestations going on at once if possible. They don't molest one child at a time and then move on to the next. They molest as many as possible during the same time period. So, I can easily see Alan having numerous victims; there may even be some who have not been discovered. I don't want to accuse Alan since I have no information about him, specifically, but I do wonder.

I'm glad he finally pled guilty but I'm concerned that the far lesser charge of molestation will mean almost no prison time, possibly even time served up until now.  Convictions for child rape and incest could have kept him behind bars for the rest of his life, which is right and just.

I'm sorry if this is a dumb question, I never really followed the S'Mortons until this crime came to light and even then I'd just briefly check in over here to see if there'd been a trial yet.

But, does Katie have the option of remarrying? Has she completely left fundy-ness, or if not, is theirs a group that allows divorce/remarriage?

Also, does anyone know where the summary page of the S'Mortons is? I went looking for it yesterday and couldn't find it.

Thanks!

I don't know if they have had this situation prior but I believe that they would definitely let Katie remarry.  I said this a while ago but the fact that Katie was such a subservient "good" wife is probably what helped a lot of people/family members to come to her side.  If she had been a more rebellious, less doting wife/sister/daughter she probably would have gotten some more comments.  As an aside it occurred to me the other day that she probably did a lot of sister momming.  She was the oldest and then had a bunch of brothers after her.  No doubt she changed many many diapers and washed many many dishes and prepared lots of meals before she went to being Alan's property.

There are many threads on here.  I always have trouble finding the main summary page, I think it was last updated a few years ago.  Basically the Mortons have 12 kids, 3 of whom married Smiths.  There was even a marriage between the grandparents at one point but after Alan's arrest it became apparent that they had separated at some point.  They are deeply dominionist, legalistic, patriarchial, quiverfull families.  And almost all the Mortons had a honeymoon baby, with only 1 exception out of 8 married kidults.  And they have been slowly moving to Paraguay to start a new compound and avoid the government.  They used to be part of VF before that broke up and they tend not to follow government regulations (seatbelts and carseats seem to be voluntary from their social media posts and citations on record).  The Smiths are their own brand of WTF, Cap'n Brett needs pages to explain but they had 4 bio kids and then adopted 8 more when their kids were mostly grown.  Sadly Kressant/Michael's wedding was the best video to explain it all but that got pulled after the arrest.  Katie's wedding was a close 2nd.  I think the pictures are still up on the original blogs but I haven't checked in over a year.

Are they definitely actually leaving the US to move permanently to Paraguay? All of them? Why would they want to leave the US-and why Paraguay? Does that include all the married children and their families or just the unmarried ones? I don't follow any of them on IG or FB or wherever so I'm not up to speed. I miss the old blog. I knew they were doing mission trips there, but a permanent move? That seems extreme, especially just when they were getting their farm all set up with actual livable conditions. It's hard to believe they will all go to South America and stay.  That is such a huge change.

What about Katie and her kids? Aren't they still on the family compound? I keep thinking about how unsure she was about marrying Alan...if only she had followed her gut and said NO, instead of deferring to Daddy's wishes.

Re: the Mortons in Paraguay. It's hard to tell what they're doing, or think they're doing. They've kept pretty mum.

According to a guy who claims to be a specialist in establishing international residences, for Paraguay it's a matter of paying your money & waiting out the required time periods as well as the basic stuff (e.g., not being a criminal). Given his info, it's likely at least some of the Mortons have already received permanent resident status there.

Here's similar info from another internet guy who advises on setting up foreign residencies & citizenships.

I'm pretty sure it's just the older married kids and their children so far. They've got a construction business set up there, which makes it seem like a permanent arrangement. I think it was going to be a larger group but after Alan's arrest the Morton parents and their unmarried kids came back to the US, presumably to help Katie? And it doesn't sound like the more recently married couples are planning to go at all.

I am confused - was he ever sentenced?  Typically if someone pleads out the sentencing is packaged with the court action.

I don't know about typically, but I know sentencing hearings are a thing. I also know that if the judge doesn't agree with a plea, they can throw it out. Here's hoping that whenever sentencing happens, he goes to jail for a long time.

I'd hope that Katie only remarries if she truly wants to and that here parents support her on that stance. After her previous experience with Alan she perhaps would find it very difficult to trust a near stranger with her children. I know financially it might be beneficial for her to remarry but probably not emotionally.

Do we know how long he will serve? I'm sorry if this has already been answered!

The two sentences listed in the Georgia Offender look-up are 8 years and 10 years. But it lists his maximum possible release date as July 24, 2020. I know that date takes time served into account but it still seems really early.

Another interesting thing to note, the date of the crime is listed as May 17, 2012, four years before his arrest.

Could the rest of the sentence be suspended?

I suspect that he has a split-sentence where he will serve half of his eight year sentence (July 2016-July 2020) in jail* and the remaining half of the sentence on probation.

*He is still at the Colquitt County Jail.

I'm sure the Cap'n and Jackie will open their home and arms to their prodigal son in two years. He will probably be paraded around on some sort of redemption speaking circuit. And if they ever allow their other children servants to leave and cleave, there will be children around again.

They make me sick.

I remember, way back when I was lurking here but hadn't joined, looking at those two blogs and being really disgusted over the foot washing. I read about a wedding once where the groom washed the bride's feet and she washed his, as a symbol of how they would care for each other. But this one? There is no way to spin it as anything other than domination and B.A.D.  I didn't realize that we were talking about the same people.

I suppose the fact that it was a plea deal played a role.

I don't want to come across as too judgemental but it seems that Jackie and her headship believe Alan can do no evil. Honestly I'd be scared of him taking advantage of those in their household after he's released. I think they'd believe him over any of their adopted children. Hopefully I'm underestimating them but from what I've seen so far I'd be scared for their two girls in particular, no matter their age given their upbringing.

The terms of his parole will probably restrict his access to children/minors, and because of the specifics of his crimes, that will likely include those from his family.

with or without a plea deal, the parole board will have access to all of the information about this case, and should (hopefully) proceed with all of that information in mind.

isn't Alan facing charges in 2 separate counties? Is this plea deal for the charges in both locations?

I love baseball but I'm dreading the new season because the White Sox ownership is THE FUCKING WORST. I watched Dominican League Baseball (Lidom!) over the winter and fell in love with their joy, spirit, and exuberance. The broadcasts were in Spanish and my Spanish is pretty weak but I loved catching phrases and repeating them. Bombe! I'm sad about MLB and Commissioner Idiota's busywork rules. But I love baseball, always and forever.
I guess I don't have a point. Just bitching. Te amo mucho, Lidom!

Humanity may have some work to do, to improve gender equality, but I was glad to hear that France has taken an important step to protect healthcare for women (and people of other genders who can get pregnant).

Feeling ragey this morning. I have a doctor's appointment this afternoon in the hope of getting help for an ongoing injury. I went to a (different!!) doctor late last year who completely blew me off. He wouldn't do diagnostic testin, he refused to send me to a specialist, and he just told me to "take it easy" and "take ibuprofen." I'm hopeful for today's appointment but I'm also feeling a SEVERE amount of rage at that doctor from last year!

Well, the rash is back with a vengeance. It never completely cleared up. I saw the derm yesterday and they did another swab and yup, raging infection again, still? It is definitely strep skin infection. I am getting so damn tired and run down from this. Who the f would immagine being hospitalized freaking TWICE for a rash?

My niece is going to be a seat filler at this year's Academy Awards.  Seat fillers are asked to wear tuxedos regardless of sex/gender.  If you see a pretty young woman with very curly hair, it could be my niece.
