Dillards 51: Making Play Look Complicated

I think it depends on location, because where I live ‘Miss [first name]’ would be very condescending and insulting. And really weird. ‘Ms [last name]’ is okay but kind of formal and distant. Doctors and such generally just call people by first name, which is definitely what I’m used to and what I prefer.

This, this, a thousand times this!!

I have never, ever been insulted by someone younger or older calling me "Miss My first name". It's respectful and slightly intimate, and for a caregiver, I would find it appropriate. I despise hearing "hon" or "dearie" or "sweetie" from someone younger. I find it disrespectful.. so "Miss Me" and "ma'am" are JUST FINE.

Besides, you can get a little sassy or silly with the "ma'am", depending on how you say it..

Guilty. I used to use the phrase "your baby" a lot. Nothing pisses off a parent more than calling a boy a girl and vv. And any endearing moniker would anger someone. No little one, peanut, big guy..."your baby". I'd rather be impersonal than wrong or offending.

Hildegard had 5 bradys last night or we needed to increase Heistheway's blood pressure drip last night- nope.

I'm so easily food influenced while pregnant. I went to go check out Derick's tweet about teenagers, got distracted by his #nationalpancakeday tweet from yesterday, and ended up making my whole family pancakes for dinner. They were delicious, much unlike Derick's tweet.

I admit that it's definitely dependent on culture. I grew up in the midwest and people would have given me the side-eye if I used it there. It can get weird, too. I used to work with kids, and so I went by 'Miss Viola' with the kids. Of course, wanting to model good behavior, we called each other by "Miss" when the kids were around. That morphed into calling each other that all the time, including when we talked about work in situations outside of work. So I'd be all "and then Miss Shelley and I had to..." and people would look at me strangely and ask how old my co-workers were. :pb_lol:

So Derick is complaining about a network interviewing teens who just survived a massacre and want politicians to do something to prevent further ones? Why pick this hill Derick?

Because he hasn't been getting attention this week, what with the season premier of a show he's no longer on. lol

Why is Derrick watching evil librul media networks in the first place??

I see women with cleavage on there all the time. And some gays too.

Derick is going on about the liberal media using kids to push their agenda (because of course he is) and he manages to get in another dig at Jazz and TLC because TLC uses Jazz just like the Parkland students are being used! Der, Your wife is still appearing on TLC and your Duggar's in law are still on their payroll...how obvious can you be jumping on the hot gun control issue of the moment and yet again attacking teenagers (oh my heart goes out to the victims but let me just take this opportunity to insult the shit out of you) and creating a spectacle of yourself just as Counting On airs on the network that fired him. But he doesn't have an agenda guys, he just really cares!  He says :"Liberal media, at least be more consistent so you can hide your biased tactics better". Hahaha Oh Really? He's one to talk of biased tactics.

I wonder if the rest of the family are happy Derrick has verbal diarrhoea? I imagine there are quite a few members who have said the same things at family/ friend gatherings; perhaps even worse. Then again, wonder if any of the family members are secretly sick of the things Derrick tweets?

I do think TLC exploits children, which includes both Jazz and the Duggar kids, but I don't think the network is trying to push a particular agenda other than making money. I also don't think the CNN interview is anywhere near the same thing.

She is getting out her wooden spoon as we speak.

She can't,  it was shoved up Derick's rear end eons ago.  The turns out the stick up his ass, was just his mom's wooden spoon.

Be careful, everyone! If you disagree with Derick you might hurt his feelings and then Cathy will have to come and tell you that a lot of assumptions are being made here!!

@HarleyQuinn I will never tire of that meme of Cathy, it is my favorite. You should post it at least every new Dillard thread and at most every page. hahaha. Actually, I would like to have that on a T-shirt. Nobody would get it but it would bring me great joy!

Derick Says: " I'm %100 for finding the best solutions to end gun violence! I think most member of humanity would believe the same."

Derick, those Parkland shooting survivors that are being used by the liberal media, that is what they are trying to do and part of their message is that this has to be a single issue that brings people with different views together, that it is a bipartisan issue not liberal vs. conservative issue.

Yet you're on your twitter slamming liberals and trying your best to detract from the issue itself and keep it a divisive debate instead of a conversation that actually leads somewhere.  Good job.

That's called code-switching and is completely normal for fully bilingual people.

That really does happen, and I am so glad there is a name for it.  There are things that make perfect sense in Spanish (2nd language), but there really isn't a good English phrase for it.

Also, on the favorite (insert relative's name here) topic, my dearly departed Mr MM always called me his "last and correct wife."  :my_heart:    His kids called me the step-wife.  :562479528aee8_32(4):

I don’t really have an issue with my son’s specialists referring to me as mum, although I’d rather just be called Karma.  But I figure whatever, we are here to discuss him, it doesn’t matter what you call me, particularly since it’s more pleasant than the rude word starting with c which DS is calling me far too often these days :(.

But I did take offence at being called “sweet cheeks” by the guy trying to attract me to his energy company stall when walking into the supermarket this morning.  Seriously.  I’m old enough to be his mother, and I thought it was just obnoxious.

OH God...that's where the Spanglish came in...there's part of a George Lopez routine, I can't remember from where, but he's talking about his tias and abuelita in K-mart (which is K-mar to us, same as Wal-mar). I was DYING when I watched it...re-runs from my childhood. His family might have been Mexican and mine is Cuban, but daymn...same shit! His skit about Jack in the Box had me on the floor too. There were two words my mother just could NOT say in English...obnoxious was "abnoshus" and a pocketbook was a "pokeboo". My aunt was worse. Fix was "fisk" among other things. I heard a lot of "no comas mierda" too...the literal translation is "don't eat shit" but it just doesn't work in English.

tl;dr there's a reason I have scrambled eggs for brains.

Mr MM never understood why Latino "beisbal" players could not say "game" and I had to "splain it, Lucy", that there isn't really a word I could think of in Spanish that ends in M... so they said "gane."  It is what it is.

Does anyone else dream in a foreign language, or is it just me?

I've actually had a few dreams where I'm speaking fluent Spanish... which is weird because I don't actually speak Spanish at all. I've never really studied it so I'm not sure why my brain picks that language for my dreams.

(Obviously I'm not really dreaming in Spanish, I just think that's what I'm speaking during the dream.)

Other than that, I do sometimes have parts of my dreams in French, and I'll occasionally find myself needing to use phrases from other languages I've studied.

Didn't the Bible say something about being prideful?

My daughter told me that's when you know that you are fully immersed in a  language and culture, when you dream in that language/culture.

I doubt it.  His projectile crap can't be doing them any good, and the two are associated whether he's on the show or not.

Wonder if Jim Bob will help him get a job...if only to keep Jill and the kids fed and maybe shut him up a bit.

He’s in the ministry program, so I’m sure Jim Bob feels he’s got that sorted for the moment. No doubt whatever financial arrangement was necessary for the length of the program has already been done.
