Because using lies would make it easy enough for Fox News and Trump fans to understand, and the New York Times appeals to a higher level reader who would understand "Boasts incorrectly".

Thanks, same thought, @Audrey2. "Lies" would immediately trigger responses from him and his pack. "Boasts incorrectly" requires some thought on their part and half of the morons won't be able to work their way through that. It's likely to trip Dump up, too.
