New book by the Pearls: Created to Need a Helpmeet

I just got a notification from Amazon that the Pearls will be releasing a new book in October which is a marriage guide for men - Created to Need a Helpmeet. I am tempted to preorder it, because they spend so much of their time addressing what women need to do, and so very little on what it looks like for men to love their wives like God loves the church. I am dying to read what they have to say!

I would read a pirated copy but no way in hell and I buying anything by the Pearls OR checking it out from my library (because then my library would have to buy it). So if anyone steals a copy and then uploads it to teh Interwebs, let me know!

Wow...like...MAN, created by God in his image and the head of that lowly creature, his wife actually NEEDS anything? Amazing thought.

I get the impression that if you write one fundie self-help book, the next ten or so just keep writing themselves:

Created to be His helpmeet

Created to need a helpmeet

Created by the head and the helpmeet - the quiverful family

Created by the helpmeet and her trusted friend, the oven - quiverful family diet

Created to be taught by the hepmeet - the school of the dining room table revisited

So much more

So much, much more: Stay at home daughter for ever and ever

If so much more is not enough: finding a godly head for the rebellious stay at home daughter

Even more: finally marrying off the stay at home daughter, and doing it well

and so on and so forth.

Perhaps I'm reading this wrong, but I perceive the title of the book as why a man is created in a way to need his helpmeet aka wife aka more stuff a woman is supposed to do for a man. Sounds like more submission drivel for teh menz to lord over their wives.

I thought your future book titles were funny!

so with this title, how does Gothard justify his celibacy?

Based on my experience with fundamentalism and sectarianism, I'd say Gothard probably can't stand the Pearls and vice versa. Honestly the families who like both the Pearls and Gothard would be the more "open minded" fundies, believe it or not.

In terms of celibacy, many Christians believe (From Catholics to fundie missionaries) that singleness is a gift and the preferred status. The Bible states as much, but to keep from being lustful, marriage is a gift and a blessing for those who can't remain single. There is a spectrum of belief on the topic with people who believe EVERYONE should be married and multiply like bunnies on one end and the other end with people who think that marriage and children take away your focus from mission work and reaching the world for the lost. And then everything in between.

I wonder if this will involve "training" a wife.

It seems like they are trying to guilt more fundie boys to marry all those single fundie SAHDs. I wonder if they will expect the men to get financially set up before marrying, or to marry young. If they can manage just fine for several years before marriage, that would prove that they don't need a helpmeet to be successful. I think they will frame it more as being charitable and marrying some woman who needs him more than he needs here.

Or maybe it's the St. Paul "marry or burn" thing.

I think it's more "guys can't cook or clean or do laundry, because they're supposed to do MANLY THINGS like beat babies, so they need women to take care of them."

I understand the curioisity, but personally speaking, I would never put a red cent in their pockets.

I wouldn't either. Blech

Might you point me to the Biblical passage that supports singleness as superior to marriage? I can't find it and want to compare it with "be fruitful...." No snark here.

I added it to my wish list at Paperback Swap. Now I'm off to the prayer closet.

Where and what is Paperback Swap?

The never-married apostle Paul wrote it:

I say therefore to the unmarried and widows, It is good for them if they abide even as I. But if they cannot contain, let them marry: for it is better to marry than to burn. I Corinthians 7:8-9

Yeah - I get the feeling this book will contain lots of pseudo-science about why men *need* sex daily (or whenever they want, basically), can't cook or clean for themselves, etc.

Indeed. And supported by the idea that its such a blessing to allow your helpmeet to reach her full potential by allowing her to cook your meals, do your laundry, raise your children, etc etc

Since I'm so OT here, perhaps the mods will ask to set up a new topic: But, why does the NT override the OT, especially Genesis? Again, not snarking. Intellectual curiosity.
