Totally Subjective Bates Wedding Dress Rundown

The Quiverful of Duggars sub-forum has their own rundown of Duggar wedding dresses, so now with Tori Bates getting married, we obviously need a thread dedicated to dresses. Post your rankings! Here's mine, from best to least:

1. Tori (Bates) Smith

Without question, the most sophisticated dress and despite some iffy modifications, overall beautiful. Extra points for the long train, classy updo, nice shoes, being adventurous enough to choose a champagne underlay, a fitted lace bodice with some sparkle, and even going for a bit of a sexier look. Could be perfect if fitted better on the waist and possibly didn't have the shear sleeves but just the lace cap sleeves, since there's already a lot going on. Her whole winter theme came together well, so this is easily my personal favorite Bates wedding.

2. Alyssa (Bates) Webster

Kudos to Alyssa for going for a well-fitted trumpet style, it looked great on her and fit her personality. Extra points for the bright pink shoes and manila veil. Points taken away for the awkward flower on the waist, the earrings that do not fit the look, and the weird thick strap/cap sleeve since we all know Alyssa was itching to ditch the modesty standards the second she got to Florida. The Barbie pink and blue colors are not for me, but are fitting for her age, personality, and time of year.

3. Whitney (Perkins) Bates

I personally don't like Whitney's dress at all, but at least it fit her well and she went for a cute bolero instead of some dumb modesty modification. I also don't like the gathered-to-the-side style but again, that's just me. Can you imagine her look though if she hadn't been trying her best to be "modest" to impress her new fundie in-laws, had already gone to a few other fundie weddings like Jessa and Jinger's, and had come into the awesome sense of style and beautiful hair she has now? I think she would have looked great in Jessa's dress and a nice updo instead of the over-geled bangs and slightly crunchy waves. Bonus points for this sassy pose though, showing us that jeans and a career in real estate would eventually be in her future even if she had to hide her leggings in her honeymoon pics:

4. Erin (Bates) Paine

I actually thought Erin looked really cute overall and it helps that she's just such a beautiful girl that she'd make any dress look okay, even though she was a victim of the fundie-modesty-frankenstein-t-shirt-dress trend. The dress fit her bodice well, the princess style suited her personality perfectly, there was just enough sparkle, but I just can't get past that awful modesty panel on the front and dumb sleeves. Can you imagine what her wedding would have looked like in 2017 once the Bates had more money from their show and fundies were finding designers like Ms. Renee? Extra points for great hair though and without question the hottest fundie husband:

5. Michael (Bates) Keilen

Poor Michael, she seems like such a nice person but her dress was Rufus-awful and I can't even start on the hair. Her dress is the worst example of modesty-frankenstein alterations, with that horrible ruched front and badly done sleeves, and just generally not form-fitting in any way. As a fellow short girl, she either should have skipped the A-line style for something more fitted at the hips (a sheath, trumpet, or mermaid) or worn heels - it doesn't help that the way it was hemmed made it too long. The only nice thing I can say is I liked the cherry blossom/rustic theme including the pink and beige bridesmaid dresses since it fit their relationship history.

unspecified2.jpgunspecified6.jpg

Even worse that in the BuB episode we saw 2 dresses that looked SO much better on her. Look at that first one, and even her hair just down like that, she would have looked gorgeous!

And just for fun, here's Kelly Jo and a porno-stached Gil:

That picture of Kelly Jo and Gil is pure gold.  :text-lol:

I agree with your ranking @freethemall.  Tori's is the best but I wish she would have had shorter sleeves.  Michael's was definitely the worst.  I hated her bridesmaids dresses though.  Especially the brown.  I haven't liked any of their attendant's dresses.  Alyssa's color scheme was the snarkiest, but damn those shoes look sexy on her.

ok, mine:

1. Tori wins so far. It was a pleasure to go through the pictures that don't bring on the facepalm.

A few things only:

I would go for a lighter underlay shade, smaller bouquet. And her flowers were a little bit "too white" for her dress color.

2. no runner-up

I hate the side curls and shovel nails. Only Alyssa had manicure I can accept. And why on earth grooms and the groomsmen wear oversized suits?! they also need some pants tailoring guide (usually too wide and too long)

the rest (I will list the things I liked only):

Michaela - lovely flowers and blush pink bridesmaids dresses

Alyssa - great shoes

Whitney - lovely smile

Erin - the best looking groom

But to be fair I would hand them money and ask to do their weddings once more.

Oh dear Rufus!  This picture cracks me up.  There is not one centimeter of skin showing on Kelly below her chin.

My list:

1.Alyssa: love the fit and the modesty alterations don’t look painfully bad!! She was glowing and happy and made me forget she was 19. I agree that she should’ve just gone strapless. I also loved her shoes but wasn’t that much of a fan of her hair. Hated the bridesmaids dresses.

2. Tori: Love the train and the overall idea of the dress, but I wasn’t a fan of the sleeves and it didn’t fit her right. I wished her bridesmaids would’ve worn a darker purple but I like the style.

3. Whitney: I’m still not sure about the bolero but it was better than it could’ve been I guess. I also like her modesty panel (the sparkly one on her boobs) way more than Erin’s. I didn’t really like her bridesmaids dresses style but I like the colors and the fact that every bridesmaid is wearing heels.

4. Michael: I didn’t think it was a total disaster like some others here think but I don’t like the flower on top of her cleavage. Too much. Her hair was also pretty bad. Her bridesmaids dresses were my fave, especially the pink.

5. Erin: I wish Erin could have a wedding do over now a Days so she could pick a better dress + bridesmaids dresses. Didn’t like the material of her dress or the modesty panel. I did like her shoes and hair. The bridesmaids dresses looked really cheap and I didn’t like the color at all.

Someone once commented that Erin’s dress looked like someone had shoved a frisbee down the front, and no other description holds a candle to that assessment.

I overall really liked Tori’s look, but the dress details being just off target enough to warp the final product gave me all of the sad feelings.

1. Tori. Not even going to lie, I would straight-up wear her dress with some minor modifications (more form-fitting, maybe slightly different lace on top) and different shoes (because I abhor those 90s chunky heels). Her color scheme was also great, though I think her bouquet was too big and too white. Swap it with a smaller version of Jinger's and we're golden. Bridesmaid dresses were a nice shape, but I am not sold on the color. Give me a darker, richer purple.

2. Alyssa. Those earrings were tragic and the Malibu Barbie color scheme made it painfully obvious that she was 19, but I am here for the dress, the shoes, and the "screw you guys, I'm outta here and I'm gonna wear TANK TOPS" attitude.

3. Erin. Those bridesmaid dresses were pretty bad, whoever did that modesty panel should be tried at the Hague for crimes against the intangible cultural heritage of dressmaking, and I'm just not into the massive hair bump look she was into back then (it just looks so artificial on her when she's such a natural beauty), but she looked like a fundie princess marrying her fundie prince, so it all kinda fit.

4. Whitney. Honestly, the whole look was very mid-2000s meh. And Whitney is not meh. Whitney is vibrant and fun and I love her in spite of her Trump-supporting ways and I hate myself a little for it. So I project that hate onto her mid-2000s meh wedding.

5. Michael. That dress did absolutely nothing for her and her dressmaker/ruiner should be hauled in after Erin's dress-ruiner so we can have a Seamstress Nuremberg Trials. That bodice is too busy and just plain ill-fitting, and the hemming makes it look like Michael is playing dress-up, not wearing a bespoke wedding dress. Her lovely hair needs a brushing and an updo if she wants to have such a busy bodice. The beige bridesmaids' dresses are really pushing the phrase "she could wear a burlap sack and still look good" to its logical limits, but the pink ones were lovely. And I am a fan of cherry blossoms, so there's that.

I think, compared to the Duggars, the Bates ladies' dresses have been more what I expected based on their typical style, more suited to their personalities. I'd say

1) Tori - Props to her for going for the sheath style, though idk that it was well-suited to her frame. I also love that she did the champagne skirt w/ lace overlay, but I wish the color and the lace on the bodice matched. I think her sleeves are gorgeous for a sophisticated winter wedding theme, just maybe too loose on her (I think long lace sleeves have to be absolutely perfectly fitted to the arm otherwise they just look weird in any scenario). It looks like Renee did a typical, hijack some other nicely designed modern dress, and "design" modesty into it, this time by adding a SHIT ton of extra lace and sparkles to the cleavage area, which makes it looks mismatched to the rest. overall though, I like her dress. It looks great from afar and in photos. In terms of bridesmaids, dress style was nice but I loathe that shade of purple.

2) Whitney - generally, I'm not a big fan of the little bolero jacket over dresses or the side-swept skirt look, but if anyone can pull it off it's Whitney haha. I do like that she went strapless+jacket instead of ruining a pretty dress with alterations. And I love that IT FITS HER totally great. Not something I'd personally wear, but I like it. Bridesmaid dresses were simple and formal enough, though I don't like the color (very nearly avoided wearing black and red when my mom and stepdad got married a few years ago......ack lol)

3) Alyssa - awkward thick straps added to a strapless dress is better than puffy t-shirt sleeves added to a strapless dress, haha. I do think the design and style were very her, and she looked great. I like her hair as well. I agree with most everyone else that her shoes were phenomenal and the wedding party colors were horrendous :/.

4) Michael - I actually think her disaster alterations were better than Erin's, mostly because it wasn't tacked-on-t-shirt-sleeves (at least the seamstress tried to make the ruching of the bodice match the ruched added sleeves?). I also think the dress pre-alteration was her style, she just has a gaudier sense of style than most.....lol. Her tendency to sit/stand with shoulders hunched and her neck craned up looking at Brandon didn't do the dress any favors. Loved her blush bridesmaid gowns, luckily they looked good on the complexion of all her bridesmaids. Hated the tan ones.

5) Erin - The whole dress just made her look puffy, especially the the added neckline and sleeves. It just swallowed her entirely. The added modesty didn't blend or match at all. Also not a big fan of how ¿shiny? it looked overall? And the bridesmaid dresses.....bless Michael for trying to work last-minute magic, but they definitely look as hand-made as Anna Duggar's wedding dress did.

Bonus, bc I love dress-browsing on pinterest, and we know we're gonna see Carlin and Josie down the aisle in the next year or so.....

Spoiler

image.png.ff7c52b89b692b750585f2baa266e367.pngI could see Carlin in something like this, girly and twirly, not super structured or super poofy or anything. Maybe more sparkle to the lace.

Spoiler

image.thumb.png.03844edfee2c4a8d2f88a733ed04c400.png I would LOVE to see Josie in something like this, plus shoulder coverage and minus the flower on the sash. I think she has the figure and is stylish enough to pull it off. It's simple with just a few unique details that give it personality.

It is a good thing these girls are taught not to be envious and to keep sweet and grateful, because if I were any of Erin/Whitney/Michael, I'd be sobbing with jealously when I saw how amazing Tori's dress was compared to my monstrosity.

Tori's exact dress wouldn't flatter me personally, but I would definitely wear a variation of it (cap sleeves without the lace all the way to the wrist, more ivory than champagne, more fitted to the waist, a better job on the alteration at the top so it doesn't look like a strapless dress with beads and lace tacked on), so she did well with the "modern modest" take on things IMO.

I forgot that Alyssa's wedding dress itself wasn't that bad - the problem was the colour scheme and the awful awful malibu blue and hot pink bridesmaids dresses and decor. LOVE her shoes - they were like, a sneak peak of the fashion breakout about to come.

You're making me reconsider switching Erin and Whitney, who are honestly kind of tied for me anyway at 3. Something about Erin, in all the flaws, works. With Whitney, meh is truly the right word.

To be fair to Michael, she really liked another dress she tried on that looked lovely on her... but it was too expensive for her budget. They’ve explained the Bates parents allocate a certain amount for the weddings (I think 10K) and anything over that is paid for by the couple. I give Michael props for not spending more than what she felt comfortable spending on a dress.

As for rankings, I agree with the original post order. Compared to the Duggars though...

1. Jinger - hands down the winner. She and Tori were very close for me, but Jinger’s fantastic shoes and the overall look to her wedding won it for me.

2. Tori - absolutely gorgeous dress on a beautiful young woman. Love the shoes, hair, and makeup on her.

3. Kendra - not my style, but it matched her bubbly personality, fit her beautifully, and didn’t have obvious modifications.

4. Alyssa - those shoes!!! The modifications on her dress weren’t bad and the dress looked great on her.

5. Jessa - the dress was lovely, but a bit loose at the top (possibly because she lost a bit of weight, which can happen.) I removed points because they insisted on an outdoor ice cream reception in November and that’s just not cool.

6. Whitney - didn’t need modesty modifications other than the bolero and it fit her well. Not a fan of the style or the hair, but she looked lovely.

7. Jill - I actually like her dress a lot. The only big issue was the modification to the neckline, which stood out pretty bad. Otherwise it was lovely and I liked her hair and makeup.

8. Joy - a lot of people aren’t fans of this dress, but I can’t see a lot of the issues mentioned. I do think the neckline was too high and looked awkward to me. I also wasn’t a fan of her hair after it fell out. I’m pretty sure she borrowed Jill’s veil for at least some of the photos and that was a very sweet and sentimental touch.

9. Anna - the dress didn’t fit well (because it was borrowed), but she looked beautiful regardless.

10. Erin - that modesty panel and sleeves kills me every time I see her dress. The dress would have looked great without those or with a better alterations job. She looked beautiful though.

11. Michael - she’s such a beautiful young woman that she could pull off just about anything. The alterations to the bodice kind of killed this for me though, as did her hair. She looked so happy and beautiful though and I loved the idea behind their wedding theme - that was a unique and sweet touch.

All the Duggars get points for sentimentality as well - Anna borrowed her sister’s dress, Kendra used a ruffle from her mom’s dress, and the rest incorporated a portion of Michelle and Grandma Mary’s dress into their’s as well. I thought that was pretty sweet.

And not just any November outdoor ice cream reception but a November outdoor ice cream reception at a parking lot. Classic Duggar stuff.

Not a fan of any of the Bateses' dresses. Tori's is ill fitting in the mid-section and I do not like the neckline or sleeves at all. Someone upthread posted 2  modest dresses -  I think the first one, the floor length gown, is beautiful.

and didn't they refrain from renting tables and chairs?  so their guests had to stand in the parking lot, in November, while they consumed ice cream floats?

I wonder if these girls are starting to see that the loose curls don't work for most of these wedding looks, because after a loooong wedding day those beautiful curls at the beginning of the day look like an unbrushed, frazzled mess by the time they're done cutting the cake.

Exhibit A:

@VelociRapture I'm surprised you put Anna above Erin (super duper plain and those crunchy curls, poor Anna) and Jill above Joy. I would probably do:

1. Jinger

2. Tori

3. Kendra

4. Jessa (but really tied with Kendra because they're so similar, and I think the pouffy princess style fit Kendra's personality more than Blessa's)

5.  Joy

6. Jill (I actually love the dress overall because I am a fan of all-lace, the fit is the only big problem)

7. Alyssa

8. Whitney

9. Erin (but could be tied with Whitney, I dislike both equally)

10. Anna (so hard to judge her because this was before they were all so famous and rich, and yes the sentimental factor)

11. Michael

I actually think Erin has the worst dress. I don't care for Michael's either, but hers at least looks like it could've been made that way. Erin's literally looked like someone sewed a silk t shirt to a strapless dress. It didn't blend well.

Alyssa looks like she's just dying to wear a strapless dress. I remember when she got married I kind of lol'd at her modesty straps because they felt like the bare minimum she could get away with wearing. Props for the pink shoes too, those her bridesmaids dresses were horrendous.

I put Anna over Erin because Erin’s modesty alterations were simply that bad. Anna’s look was simple, but classic and I think she likely had less budget to work with than any of the others. She did a good job all things considered.

As for Joy and Jill - I just think Jill’s hair held up better than Joy’s and I liked her dress a bit better. I think Jill’s dress is odd because a lot of complaints centered around how it fit in the waist, but in a lot of photos that looks fine to me. The only thing that really bothers me about her dress is the neckline because it didn’t blend too well. Joy’s neckline bothered me more for some reason though, so I put Jill’s dress over Joy’s.

(I’m also likely allowing the whole “IDK, ask Austin” stuff to color my view a bit. Joy looked lovely and happy though, as did all the other Brides.)

Comparing the Duggar/Bates wedding dresses

Kendra - it fit, no obvious tampering, and worked well with her personality.  Tbh, I would have worn it myself!  And until their social media proves otherwise, I’m secretly rooting for them.  Fingers crossed!

Jessa - even though I probably would have pictured Jessa in something more straight lined, versus princess-y, the fact that it was blush colored showed off her individuality imo.  I’m still not sure who’s to blame for the reception fiasco though (like, Jessa wanted sunday’s, but was she the one who yelled, “AT ALL COSTS!!”, or was JB the one who said, “Whoops, I just happened to forget to pay for a reception venue *hardy har har*”)

Jinger - I don’t know if it was her family, or Jeremy, who wanted more traditional.  But I was kind of surprised.  It all looked phenomenal, and dare I say “classy”.  But I honestly would have pictured Jinger is something more modern, and even “fun”.  So I’m just not sure if the whole wedding was really “her”.

Alyssa and Erin tied - The Bates finally get on the list lol.  If I had to pick between the two, I actually liked Erin’s dress (PRE-t-shirt panel) better.  But at least Alyssa stuck with just straps.  Of course Alyssa’s shoes were a nice little foreshadowing of things to come - and I know I’m in the minority, but I really don’t *hate* the color theme she had.  Execution of it was a little in your face, but the actual colors weren’t that bad.  As for Erin, I thought the wedding was sweet, and I particularly loved her little scene, where she’s feverishly brushing her teeth in her wedding dress, in preparation for her first kiss lol.

Tori - I shared my piece about Tori’s dress, but for those who didn’t see it, I agree with the color of the lace, being too stark of a contrast with the tone of the underfabric.  And the sleeves (jmo), could have been a smidge tighter to fit better.  But otherwise, the wedding seemed classy, and elegant :)

Jill and Joy tied - Joy’s dress fit better than Jill’s (I felt like Jill’s got altered too much, and made her look a little bit bigger in the hip area than she really is).  However Jill had better hair and makeup ;)  Joy’s wasn’t altered too bad, but I would have loved her sleeves being a little tighter, too.  Her wedding was just as nice as Jill’s, but with Joy it was wayyyy obvious she could care less, and was ready to get out of there.

Whitney and  Michael tied - I also agree with others that I kind of wished Whitney could have a do over, because I bet her wedding would look a lot different.  I actually didn’t mind the bolero.  But I think a faux fur option would have meshed well for the Christmas theme ;)  And I’m just not in love with trumpet dresses in general, though of course she manages to pull it off.  As for Michael - the fabric over her boobs, only makes my eyes go.directly.to.her.cleavage.  So modesty fail there.  And also, anyone else get Ariel/Mermaid vibes from the shell pattern there?!

Anna - she looked very beautiful, but unfortunately once you compare it all the other options of “what could have been”, it just ends up on the bottom of the list #pooranna

. . . sweet Jesus, this is a long post

Bridesmaid Dress comparison! My ranking:

Tori - I like this shade of purple because it's different and the dresses look like they fit everyone. And I'm a sucker for lace. I give these ones a leg up on Jinger's wedding party because they all match in color. :pb_lol:

Spoiler

tumblr_p16khlukpE1uipssao1_1280.jpg

Michael - I actually really like the pink lace dresses, they're dainty and nice but those maid/matron of honor dresses are straight up trash. That makes a nice wall color, not a formal dress color.

Spoiler

7abe83cc05ac264a8633f201bf7886d6.jpg

Erin - Plain, they all look like little Cinderellas, but they look altered really well. Probably because Michael sewed them all.

Spoiler

erin+bates+wedding.jpg

Whitney - Smaller wedding party and tea length dresses. She had Alyssa and Josie as the only Bates in her party (unless that's Katie on the far left, I can't tell)

Spoiler

49035726e632768ec169fb39034afe97.jpg

Alyssa - These colors are soooooooooooooooooo bright and the dresses look ill fitting. I want to give her extra points though for the brightness, just because I think it really fits her personal taste. At least as much of it as I can gather.

Tori

It's not poorly altered to make it modest. It has a pretty train. I also like the lace details to a point.

The belt made the dress inconsistent. I don't like the champagne underlay. I like the lace, however, the styles are not consistent. I'm not a fan of the sheer sleeves because what is the point of having them?

Michael

Aside from the bust, it's a cute, simple dress. On a more psychological note, I think she's self- conscious about her body and her confidence is shot. She's beautiful and her hair hides that.

Alyssa

It works with her body type.

A little bit of issue with the modesty alterations. Sleeves are a bit awkward.

Erin

Alterations may not have worked very well and should have found a dress with the square neckline that was attempted.

Whitney

She's confident. Probably not the dress she would choose now. The bolero doesn't jeopardize the look. However, this dress looks like something from the 2000's.

For shits and giggles, Kelly

She has the classic 80's look, so I cut her some slack.

All in all, there are a lot of things to consider here like personal style, maturity, and self- confidence. I think the confidence factor is the most important because you can put a bride in a beautiful gown, but the lack of self-confidence takes a lot away from it.

This^- You articulated this so much better than I did. Love the lace details and train, but the middle section, neckline and sleeves don't work and the underlay is too dark.

Boy, that picture of Kelly Jo and Gil had me doing a double-take. KJ and Erin could be twins. I know it was the late 80s, but I despised that whole mutton sleeve look. Don't get me started on the baby's breath growing out of Kelly Jo's voluminous hairdo.

As far as the other Bates wedding dresses, I like Tori's, except I wish there wasn't so much contrast between the champagne bottom and white top. I like Alyssa's dress, the modesty alterations aren't hideous, and it seems to fit the personality she's shown via social media. I'm not sure how I feel about Whitney's dress, it's just okay. I agree with others who said that if she had a do-over, she'd probably take it. The modesty modifications absolutely killed both Erin's and Michael's dresses, which is unfortunate. They are both beautiful girls, who could have really knocked it out of the park.

Tori’s and Alyssa’s were probably my favourite of the bride dresses. I also liked Tori’s bridesmaid dresses. Alyssa’s bridesmaid dresses are bright and garish but you can so tell that she dearly wanted them like that, when you compare them to the muted stuff her sisters have had.

Erin’s and Michael’s bride dresses... oh dear. The modesty alterations were bad. Erin’s BM dresses are an OK colour but I don’t really like the shape, they could’ve been more fitted. I’m not a fan of floor-length dresses but that’s personal choice. Agree with Michael’s brown dresses not being that nice. The pink ones were a nice shade. Again though, they would’ve been much better at maybe knee-length and without the goddamn tiers. The tiers on those dresses are the worst bit for me, especially the ones on the brown dresses. They could’ve looked OK with the floor length but gotten rid of the tiers.

I’m not going to compare all the dresses with each other. Out of all of them, though, I’d say I like Jinger’s and Tori’s best. And even with all the modesty alterations I still dislike Anna’s dress the most. I know I know it was before they were super famous but it’s just too damn plain and boring.

I wonder how Alyssa got away with those straps? It clearly shows that their modesty rules had been looser longer than one might think. Or she was just headstrong enough.

My wedding dress list:

1. Alyssa + Tori

I like the idea of both gowns but both have some points that I cannot get over to love them (as I did with Jinger and Kendra). Alyssa had those straps and the ruffle flowers, Tori had the lace patches on the arms (all or nothing would have been nicer for long arms) and the champagne was a tad to dark for me.

Hair and veil are both nice.

I heavily dislike their colour schemes.

2. Whitney

Her dress is a bit ordinary late 90‘/early 2000 look, but I like that she went with the bolero route instead of slapping modesty panels on. Sleeves weren’t in style then, so good choice in my book.

Again I dislike the red and black colour scheme.

3. Erin + Michael

Both dresses are brought down by the alterations. Erin had the nicer hair and Michael the nicest colour scheme of all.

Bates‘ Bridesmaids dresses

1. Tori

Nice style, not my favourite colour but still pretty enough.

2. Michael

I get that beige is a hard colour to wear. I for once can’t, because it makes my skin look very yellow, and I get that the style is hard to pull off (very formfiting but also a bit matronly) but they looked gorgeous.

3. Whitney

The colours are a bit harsh in contrast but the cut is timeless and you could always change the belt to get a nicer colour.

4. Erin + Alyssa

Both options haven’t got a nice cut. Erin’s colour is ok but the white bow makes me  shudder. Alyssa‘s colours are so bright and Barbie that it hurts my eyes. But her age excused it a bit.

And now I am already very very excited for Carlin‘s choices. My gut tells me she will be engaged in no time.
