It blows my mind that they supposedly read their Bibles so often, and do yearly read-throughs and so on, and can still take it literally. I can't imagine how they do that. [...]

Edit: Upon further reflection, I guess I do get it. It's like @Carm_88 said: no critical thinking skills. [...] I get it, I just don't like it.

Yes. I think it highlights the power of indoctrination, dogma, and community. If you grow up being taught something like literal inerrancy from the earliest age, and remain part of a community who all believe that (and denounce its opposite), and meet regularly with people to reinforce that ingrained belief... it's going to take a lot to overcome all that. We like to think we're rational creatures and only believe things based on logic and evidence, but we don't realize what a powerful influence indoctrination and social community have on our cognitive process. This last decade has been a real eye-opener for me in this regard.

When my son was maybe 11 months old - we were in Florida. He had on some sweatpants (gray, blue, I don't remember) and one of those onesie tshirts with neon orange little crabs on it. (not obnoxious -

It's OK. She'll have a huge stretchy headband with a flower on it.

Okay, so I don't usually weigh in on Duggar threads because I am super passionate about how shitty fundie life is, and it's all still kind of triggering... but I have firsthand experience with that fe

I think that for the vast majority of us, the reason that it is so hard to believe is that we had critical thinking skills taught to us from a young age. I know that I was analyzing and looking for themes and different meanings in books in elementary school. By the time high school came about, the teachers wanted to know what we thought. The Duggars don't have this, they think what their parents think and it's all about how good you are at parroting. So where we can see allegory, they see it literally.

Except, the homeschool version of fundies aren't taught critical thinking or about different literature types.  So they don't 'get' allegory.  Or that 'history' is a capturing of stories told from generation to generation.  And that, from my perspective, is one of the benefits of cult thinking is to keep folks ignorant so they don't know the truth.  Which I also find a bit intriguing when comparing that thought process to the knowledge that one of the reasons we have the Bible in English and not Latin or Greek is because protestants fought to get scripture into the language of the people and out of the hands of priests only.

Deal. I need a snark/drinking buddy. We can use these to smuggle alcohol into the theater:

But they do try to cover the cult up. Wearing jeans, to name one. First Jinger and now Jill.

Do you think they included Barney? Or is he too mainstream for fundies?

Will there be nudity before the fall? If not I probably won’t watch it. I already know what happens at the end.

No, I think Eve will be wearing this lovely outfit. How modest and it's all natural. No chemicals added.

My uncle just died from COVID. He wasn’t that much older than I am, so I kind of grew up with him. Just ten days ago my mom had been pleading with him to get vaccinated, but he wanted to wait to make sure the shots were really safe. I’m kind of devastated.

I just found out my little bonus kid is in a treatment center on a suicide watch tonight. He and I share a hobby and a couple weeks back he opened up to me that he's severely depressed and was wanting to hurt himself. I let his parents know and thankfully he had also been talking to them. I'm just heartbroken because him being in this center means that his parents had to call 911 and have him admitted and I know that was so hard for them to do. He's a young kid and has his whole life ahead of him but just wants to end it all and I don't know how to help him.

Middle aged woman with mommy issues...but missing her today.
She got so much wrong with me, but she had the best intentions and tried so hard.
She got so much right, too.  I forget that sometimes.  Sometimes I remember and dismiss it out of spite.
“They did the best they could with the tools they had.”  I forgot where I first heard that but I’ve carried it with me like a mantra since my parents passed.   They truly did.  Whatever else was missing, whatever I needed that they couldn’t give, the love was always there.

      Always.
      That’s something.
My confidence in my own abilities.  Faith in my own power.  My own strength.  They gave me that, too.
      That’s also something.
They’re why I’m messed up, but they’re also why I’m okay.

      Shit’s complicated.
She died before I figured out how smart she really was.  Sad thing is I don’t think ever figured that out for herself.
Ignore me - just crying in my car waiting to pick up my son.
