Maybe not. Even the most popular names of today are used far less frequently than the most popular names were 20 years ago. You can check the number of children born with a given name on the SSA's website. It's been years since I've done this so I'm making the numbers up but just to illustrate in the 1980's he number one most popular name was given to 10-15% of all babies born. Now it's more like 3%. As you go down with popularity rankings those percentages drop quickly. When last I bothered to look you dropped below 1% of all babies born in a year being given a specific name shortly after getting out of the top 10. 

ETA: These days your chances of having 2 or 3 kids in the same class as your child with the same name are not all that much higher if you use the 5th most popular name than if you use the 25th.

@Cleopatra7, that's really interesting - I've never heard that before!  I have a Kevin, and after we had him I started noticing a lot of Asian (-American) boys named Kevin (we live in NY).

In Germany, it's considered to be the worst of the worst. Not the sound of it, I think... but the idea is that Kevins are loud, low class, unintelligent kids... sad actually, it's a nice name.

I think it's interesting that Kevin is like the Chad thing in Colorado, ie, "He's being such a Chad." Used in a derogatory fashion, I think that's where it started anyway.

The popularity of names and people loving them, wanting to use them, is always interesting when people are surprised or slightly upset. There's a reason they're popular and from what I've read it goes back to exposure, shared experiences in what was most popular around the age the mother started puberty. It was correlation, not causation, but they did a big survey of mothers on their children's names, what television shows/ music they watched as child, young adult, etc. I think there was also some stark differences in naming between younger mothers and older mothers, younger mothers were significantly more likely to use pop culture names or create their own name for the child, than older mothers. I think they were planning on doing a follow up study examining emotional maturity, financial security and see how those played in a more in depth multivariate analysis.

There's also cycles of very feminine names, to more gender neutral and back, as well as spikes in the female version of male names (ie more Georgianias, Phillipas, Earlenes, Cornelias etc).

I don't have academic journal access anymore, but those were all related to the Twilight phenomenon and I think used Friends as another example.

I'm having fun making our baby names spreadsheet, mr. cascarones will eventually sit down and red line through it, which will be interesting. We've got pretty different taste so far!

My sons names are not what I'd say is rare or different.One list said their names were more popular in the 70's.Gregory "Greg",Jeffrey,and Douglas "Doug".The one I regret is Jeffrey..his name...Mr Melon picked it.Number one it sounds too similar to Gregory.Number two is it reminds me of a serial killer.Not just Jeffrey Dahmer.I was watching the ID channel and I can't remember the show because I was so appalled that the criminal's name was Jeffrey.Too late now,but I wish we had used his middle name as his first name.But,when they were in school,there was only one other student who had the same first name as they did.

They were saying for years they wanted to use Meredith. Everyone thought it was a joke they had to get in good with Meredith Vieira, but apparently not.

Well part of the stigma of "Kevin" was caused by being chosen overwhelmingly by parents with lower socioeconomic background (at least 10-20 years ago...now...almost no one uses it, the stigma is THAT great). Because these children acted up more in class than their middle- and upper-class mates the name became equivalent to the image of a disruptive, difficult and less intelligent child....Which culminated in one study famously quoting a teacher saying: Kevin is not a name, it's a diagnosis.

It is sort of Germanys version of tryndy names, we just use "cool" english names. It originated mostly back in east germany (partly because american movies etc. were popular). In the 80s and 90s those names were Mandy, Chantal, Kevin, Rico and Henry (to a lesser extent) etc. Nowadays certain names with italian or french background have been added to the kevinism movement, namely Alessio (name of the spawn of a former trashy reality couple) and Jeremy-Jerome (always hyphenated and always pronounced wrong: " sherremy-sherome"....."sh" spoken as in "ish")

I also think it is unfair to the children of these names who need a thick skin and likely will be prejudiced against by some in life. Still I think it is inevitable to associate names with certain images: Mabel, Helen and Fay are either nice older ladies or cute hipster babies, Aiden, Jaden and Braden were likely born after 2000 and are more commonly part of lower and middle class ....and so on

Oh, yeah, totally.  And M isn't like J.  With J, you could change the spelling of G name with a J (like with Jinger).  But you can't do that with any other letter and the letter M.

Off the top of my head, I'm having a hard time coming up with girl names that start with M that they haven't used: Madelyn/Madeline, Molly, Michelle (Mom would love that), Michaela is too close to Michael.  So Madison Ashley Duggar it is...

If you're gonna pick a letter, I don't think "M" is that bad since there seem to be tons of M names. They still could use Maureen, Maura, Macie, Madeleine, Mia, Magdalen, Megan, and Melissa for girls. 

My great-aunt decided to give all of her kids "E" names for whatever reason. They were Catholic and so had a ton of kids, and one of the younger girls had to be "Eunice." Yikes.

well i doubt they'll use anything similar to "Mary" or "Magdalene" bc ebil catholics....lol but yes you are right there are TONS of M names for girls. My pics for a future (unfortunate....) M-girl are Mariah or Mallory.
