I have seen a lot of people here have a theme for names for their children.I have a friend, she has 4 kids, the boys have "K" names, the girls,"S" names.Because I have a surname as my middle name,I really don't care for those types of names for girls, including names that can be used for a boy or a girl...like Casey,Tracy,Stacy,Whitney,Harper,Hudson,Ashley etc.The only exception would be Lindsey, and it fits all of the above...last name and is used for a boy or a girl.We did not have any girls, but Mr. Melon and I agreed that we prefer names that are more feminine..for girls.I hated my middle name, and dropped it ,when I got married. My grandmother told me once I should name a daughter,if I had one, this offending middle name. She had a friend who had a daughter named "Dudley" and thought that was a beautiful name.I disagree. There was an on-going disagreement in our family. When I was in high school Biology,we learned about genetics and positive and dominant traits.Well, almost everyone in our family has blue eyes, some have a darker blue, some had a pale blue, some, like one of my sons,my father,my grandmother and I,have or had blue-green eyes.Sometimes mine look more blue, sometimes more green, according to what I am wearing or my moods.

I have one of those boy/girl names ( although I think it's more often used for boys in North America).  As a kid, it was embarrasing - I got put into the boys gym class my first year of high school, and as a young adult it was annoying - most of my mail came addressed to Mr. _____, phone calls for Mr. _______, people expecting men when they met me.  Now though, I'm fine with it.

My sisters are named Elizabeth and Jennifer though, so I always used to ask my parents what the heck they were thinking when it came to naming me (especially as my middle name is boy/girl as well).

Yes! This! Too many Duggars, the themes are a method of organization :hee: lol. Except, I honestly can't think of 19 different themes that the Duggars would go with (without them all/mostly being "letters" like the Smuggars haha).

snip

I just love name-picking in general :P i'm pretty sure my kids are going to end up with 5 each because i like too many, lol....

I am now determined to think of 19 or more name themes.

I love picking names, too. My kids have three names each. I did not choose a name theme; and now I wish I had. My kids first names don't go together as a set at all. It didn't even occur to me how they sounded as a sibling set. I simply picked names that I connected with at the time, and unintentionally created a pretty strange combo.

Alphabetical; Reverse Alphabetical; Flora and Fauna; Stars and planets (I have a friend who named her daughter Io. It suits her); Geographic; Great Thinkers (we're doing that one for our fish. We currently have Plato and wee baby Aristotle); Fictional Protagonists; ...erm, how are we doing here?... ...erm, cultural; One letter longer each time; Matching Initials; Alphabetical Initials; 'Roman' style ('ia' endings for girls, 'us' endings for boys), Names that are also objects, Gem names, Virtues, ...

...and I'm stuck.

Really wish naming things was a proper job though. I'd sign up right away.

My sister is adopted from the US Foster Care system, and her (high on hard drugs at birth) mother gave her an...interesting name.  My parents thought about changing it when they adopted her because it is so out there, but ultimately decided to keep it as they felt her birth name was part of her heritage and they didn't want to take that from her.

UNFORTUNATELY, it is similar enough to my name that when people hear our names together, they think that our parents wanted us to "match" and just named my sister something weird to make it work.  Could be worse, I guess.  Her mother could have gone with "Darcy" (which is a first name I otherwise LOVE on girls), and then we would have been in REAL trouble.

It kind of ends up like this:

Presidents names, Same number of letters in name (works best with very short, one syllable, or very long names), Old Testament, New Testament, Nature (River, Sky, etc.), Birds? (Dove, Phoenix, Robin, etc.), Shakespearean, derivative of a parents name, same ending sound, or song titles.

Seasons! I know this caps out at four...but I do know an Autumn that had a sister named Summer. I've also worked with a Spring, but have never come across a Winter before ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I had a cat called Winter many years ago. She was the kitten of my current grand old lady torty. She was so, so, pale grey tabby - you couldn't really see her striping, but she was sort of iridescent/sparkly like a frost.

Did anyone mention months for a theme? I've heard of January, April, May and June being used as names. I also went to junior high with twins named Autumn and Season.

I'm glad my kid came with a name already because I'm bad at choosing names. It took me forever to name my kitten.

I remember seeing a blog where the family had about 6 kids, all but one girls, and they were all named after presidents. I'm pretty sure there was Madison, McKinley, Kennedy, and Reagan, and then I want to say the last two were Taylor and then Lincoln for the boy, but I could be wrong about that.

I went to college with a Winter. Themes like this are stranger to me because there are only a limited number...not like flowers or even a letter theme. Like once a family would have Spring, Summer, and Autumn, then you know...

baby Winter is coming.

There are a set of twins that I know; their names are Alice and Winter. They have the Wonderland theme going, but it's still Winter.

My poor cats went through a few names before I found ones that stuck.

My two sons' initials are MJT and OLT. We did not plan or initially realize that the younger's initials are two letters down from the older's. We have talked/joked about initialing the next one either QNT (two more letters) or ROT (three letters to make the pattern interesting). Naming themes can be quite subtle.

On the topic of Muses, I've long thought Thalia and Melpomene would be cool names for twins. I suppose Melpomene could be a rough name to have, though. :pb_lol:

I determined very long ago my non existent daughter would be named  Windsor Rose. Win for short.  Before that it was Ainsley.

Know a woman who named her kids for birds.  Seriously - happily she only had two girls and two boys.  Jay, Piper, Pheobe, and Robin.

The naming same letter is old-fashioned.  It only stands out because there's 19 kids.  Whole families did that when I was young.

I have a friend who is doing president names. She has Reagan, Lincoln and Kennedy so far. It totally works for them!

I name my cars after Shakespeare characters. LOL

I also know an Autumn with a sister named Summer. The middle names are nature-y too!

There is a woman on Instagram that has six kids with presidents names. Jefferson, Lincoln, Roosevelt, Pierce, Ford, and Truman. Roosevelt is the only girl. I have no idea what hashtag led me to that page, but I've been loving the name Roosevelt for a girl ever since.
