7 sisters and 1 cheesesteak

The seven sisters are posting pics from months back when they were in Philly. They stopped at a roadside stand and everyone got a hotdog and DADDY bought 1 cheese steak sub for everyone to try. Including the boys and Mommy and Daddy,(yes, that is what they call them) that is about 1 bite per person. They said it was the best cheese steak they ever had. Poor seven sisters,no wonder they are so skinny. Everyone knows if you are going to Philly you have to go to Geno's and Pat's and AT LEAST get one of each and try to decide which is better. (I think we got 2 of each and my kids were super young then). I feel bad about it,all those kids and only 1 sub...

Food as a means of control is pretty high on the abuse scale IMHO.

Well, at least everyone got a hotdog I suppose...but that is really bizzarre-o

I used to live in Philadelphia and it's basically blasphemy to not have a wonderful cheesesteak. If you go to certain places, they're really not even that expensive. I used to get them from the food trucks on my college campus. I remember that they were $4 each because Subway just started advertising $5 footlongs and I was completely unimpressed because I could get a full-sized cheesesteak for a dollar cheaper. The prices started to increase by the time I graduated, but I bet you could still get them for $5-6 each. What is the point of spending money on a trip to Philly if they don't budget for the most important experience?

Agreed, bananacat. I live in the Philly area, and there honestly isn't a corner you can turn to that doesn't sell cheesesteaks. Some places, you can get two for under five bucks. I honestly don't see why they couldn't have gotten two. At least they all got a hot dog. But they're in Philly man! How are you going to go to Philly and not have a cheesesteak?

Haha, a lot of people around my neighborhood call it blasphemy if you don't get your cheesesteak from Pat's or Geno's. One guy says it's not a real cheesesteak unless you get it from there. Meh, I don't care where I get my cheesesteak, as long as it's good. :P

What time of the year did they go there? If it was water ice season, then it's also blasphemy not to try one! Lol.

Well maybe they are taking a nod from the Maxwells - ya know they don't want to make an idol out of cheesesteaks and all

I think "try" is the operative word here. They probably live such an insular life that the parents were afraid of buying too much of something they might not like.

Pats with provo.

BTW Joey Vento just passed away.

Forgot to add that, when traveling, you owe it to yourself to indulge FULLY in the local specialty. I just got back from Baltimore, where I had a perfect orgy of crab cakes and she-crab soup.

And, thanks, guys--now I am fighting the urge to jump in the car and drive to Philly.

I think its a pleasure of the flesh that they fear. Their whole food weirdness, is just reducing food to a necessity of existence. It doesn't account for all of those other pleasures good food gives us. The eating with your eyes and nose first. How the hell can ya do it with a freekin bean burrito made by gringas?

Kids need to have some independence no matter how old they are, including their own money and the ability to make their own decisions. My sister & I just took our kiddos to florida in August, and they each had their own money to spend on whatever they wanted. If they wanted a snow cone, they could have it, they just used their own money, and the same rules applied for any shops we went into. It boggles my mind the kind of absolute control these families have over their children.

That's what I do as well. I let them earn money ahead of time and then kick in some extra. Then, they can decide which souvenirs they want and when they want to eat. I pack lunches as well.

We recently went to a major theme park with a Mormon family that we are close to and it was some serious culture shock. The parents really want their kids to get used to doing what they are told. That just is not the focus of my parenting. Their kids did not seem any better behaved than mine, so what is the point?

On the Geno's vs. Pat's debate, I must respectfully disagree here. The BEST cheesesteaks are from Tony Luke's. Jim's steaks are also very good. But one split 7 ways?? Seriously? Are these people allergic to fun? What do they normally eat when they are at home, gruel?

Agreed. Was in Glen Burnie, MD a couple of years ago so my husband could visit with family. We were on a tight budget, but we still stopped into Moe's and enjoyed some crab cakes. I kind of :o at the prices, but we ordered a couple of appetizers that came with big crab cakes and mini salads, I'm so glad we did!

I do like Jims. I think they sometimes have better meat than Pats.

When we were taking my brother to college outside of Philly in 1964, my working class father took the family (5) into Philly to taste the cheese steaks. We each had one from Geno's and one from Pats so that latter that day on the way home we could decide which we wanted for the return trip.

I remember a sub called a 'ham boat' from a small shop in Chester PA, it was divine :D

I want a cheesesteak too! I am due for a Philly trip, hoping DH gets a work one this coming year so we can all go along for free. Hey Philly people, there is an Italian sandwich called the "Mamma Mia" way down by the bridge heading out of the city. Anyone know the name of the place? That sandwich was so good, my DH brought us some home in a cooler his last work trip.We liked it more than the cheesesteaks.

Sorry everyone! Pat's and Geno's are for the tourists. There are much, much better cheesesteaks to be had in Philly. Jim's used to be good, but not any more.

Didn't the Maxwells once share a small lobster?

Lobsters are so anti-bibical. I mean shellfish is totally an abomination unto the lord...

Hotdogs were probably less expensive. Dad is a cheapskate.

I know I'm in the minority here but I think what thy did makes perfect sense and I would do the same for my family. If you know that your kids like hot dogs but aren't sure what they'll think of cheesesteaks then buy them hot dogs and let them try the cheesesteak. To buy several cheesesteaks on the *hope* that they like them is ridiculous and a possible waste of money imho. :confusion-shrug:

Besides a vegetarian, who doesn't like a Philly cheesesteak?? Blasphemy sheer blasphemy. Its been three years since my last cheesesteak, its hard waiting until spring for my next one :violin:

A possible explanation is that they already ate and did not want to stuff themselves.

I hadn't looked at that blog before. Those are some serious frumpers. And advertising Courageous in the sand? So weird.

I'm confused. When did we start talking about the last Vision Forum intern retreat with Doug?
