The Michigan sports doctor Larry Nassar, who treated elite female US gymnasts, has been charged with sexually assaulting nine girls.

On Wednesday, Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette filed 22 counts of criminal sexual conduct, some involving girls younger than 13.

He described Dr Nassar, accused of molesting gymnasts as he treated back and hip injuries, as "a monster".

The doctor has denied allegations of abuse in the past.

Dr Nassar has said he was carrying out legitimate procedures.

He is already being held on a charge of possessing child pornography and faces trial over accusations he abused a girl repeatedly at her family home.

'More times than she could count'

The 53-year-old doctor, who has treated Olympic gymnasts, is accused by more than 60 former patients and athletes of sexual abuse during pelvic procedures.

He was stripped of his medical licence last month, amid at least six criminal and civil lawsuits.

Dr Nassar was fired in September after working for decades as a doctor for gymnasts at Michigan State University, as well as USA Gymnastics - the sport's governing body.

The new charges relate to work he did at Michigan State University's Sports medicine clinic and at a gymnastics club called Geddert's Twistars in Eaton County.

Parents were either asked to leave the room while the abuse took place or Dr Nassar used a sheet or stood in a position to block any view, police said.

A girl identified as Victim B, now 21, said she was sexually assaulted by Dr Nassar "more times than she could count," Det Sgt Andrea Munford wrote in an affidavit.

Victim B said "all the gymnasts trusted Nassar and that he was like a god to the gymnasts", she added.

Allegations increasing

"This guy is disgusting. This guy is despicable,'' said Mr Schuette. "Dr Nassar used his status and authority to engage in horrid sexual assaults under the guise of medical procedures."

Dr Nassar's lawyers declined media requests for comment on Wednesday, but he has previously denied abuse.

Police say allegations against him continue to increase almost daily. Three former members of the US gymnastics team described their experiences on CBS's "60 Minutes" show on Sunday.

Image captionLarry Nassar looks at a computer after seeing a patient in this 2008 file photo.

"He would put his fingers inside of me, move my leg around,'" said Olympian Jamie Dantzscher, a member of the bronze-medal-winning American team at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney.

"He would tell me I was going to feel a pop and that that would put my hips back and help my back pain.''

Allegations of sexual assault were first revealed by the Indianapolis Star newspaper in September 2016 when he was accused by two former gymnasts.

Since then, more than 60 women have accused him, and at least 40 have filed lawsuits.

Several of those suits name USA Gymnastics as a co-defendant, claiming they had not done enough to prevent the abuse.

Yes, this is a truly heinous example of grooming, ignoring signs/actual reports of abuse.   MSU is a defendent in some of the cases.  This is daily news here in Michigan as more and more women join the case.   I've found WILX out of Lansing to be most up-to-date with coverage if you want to follow the case more closely.

Bumping this because the allegations against this creep continue.  Including Simone Biles, Ally Raisman and Mikayla Maroney.

Gabby Douglas accused him as well - like Raisman, she competed at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics.

Maroney wants to speak at his sentencing, not his trial. He either pled guilty or was found guilty of possessing child pornography and sexual assault. Regardless, Chrissy Teigen is a beautiful human being for offering to cover any possible fee.

Maroney is also currently suing US Gymnastics. Her team is claiming the NDA she signed in 2016 was illegal. They say that it was an illegal way for the defendants to avoid reporting the sexual assault of a minor and that she only signed it because she needed money for psychological treatment in order to heal from the years of abuse.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.cnn.com/cnn/2017/12/20/us/mckayla-maroney-lawsuit/index.html

Apparently Maroney was the only victim who signed a NDA. I really hope a Judge is able to throw the NDA out because she deserves the right to confront this monster in court if she so chooses.

I almost wish I had gone and gotten a seat in the courtroom for all of this. My guess is it's gonna go till Friday. Judge Aquilina doesn't do things halfway.

At least he's never getting out. The only bright spot in all this.

NPR covered this while I was getting ready for work this morning and posed a good question.  Why is the head of USA Gymnastics (who has been in place for 18 years) still in his present job given what we know happened?

Steve Penny finally resigned in March of last year, a few months after allegations hit the news. The problem is USAG has been complicit to child sexual abuse, physical abuse, financial abuse and educational neglect for decades.

The first time I came across home school and educational neglect was in the early 1990s in relation to Olympic-level gymnasts. Yes, all those girls in leos have straight As...given to them by their parents... sitting around the dining room table! *Shocker*  There are very few EXCEPTIONS...Olympians who went to actual high school (like Jayce Phelps).

There used to be a snark gymnastics blog...any refugees from Gymnastics Gossip Message Board (GGMB)?

Too many scandals to list. I get most of my intel here if you are or want to be more than a casual fan: https://gymtruthteller.wordpress.com/

Larry Nassar wrote a letter prior to his four-day sentencing, saying he wasn’t sure if he could “mentally” handle four days of listening to victim-impact statements.

It’s unclear to whom the letter was addressed, but Ingham County Circuit Court Judge Rosemarie Aquilina discussed the letter this morning at the start of the third day of Nassar’s sentencing hearing. She asked him several questions about it and said it wasn’t worth the paper it was written on.

This was on my news feed this morning. I love her so much. She even made him sit on the witness stand and face them all. His response to that?

"She wants me to sit next to her for all four days so all the cameras will be focused on her."

Dude - suck it up.  Your victims have to live with this for a lifetime.

And I've seen that USA Gymnastics decided to drop Moroney's NSD.

It would have been the stupidest decision for them NOT to drop the NSD. Everyone already knows what a monster Nassar is and how much USA Gymnastics (among others) fucked up. Keeping the NSD in effect would have only made them look far guiltier and more petty at this point.

And Larry, SUCK IT THE FUCK UP BUTTERCUP! A few days listening to your victims is a pretty small price to pay compared to the horrible things you did to them. Fingers crossed you get the maximum sentence because you fully earned it!

I’ve never heard of Aquiliana before, but I’m absolutely loving her. Not just because she is allowing pretty much any victim speak who wishes to, but because she’s forcing this asshole to sit through it all.

I love her so much. She was the one who did my swearing in, and she was a professor of mine as well. She takes no shit, and she's smart as a whip.

I wish she would run for office.

I'm a fan of gymnastics and have been paying pretty close attention to this case. When she was announced as the judge, people in the gymnastics community were a little worried about conflicts of interest since she teaches at MSU and they are involved in lawsuits for enabling this guy. But clearly that is not holding her back. She's been great.

I haven’t posted on FJ in awhile, but from one of Nassar’s victims, thank you for the support. It’s hard to adequately convey his former god-like status to people not involved in the gymnastics world, but we all basically worshiped him. I believed for years I had gotten a legitimate medical procedure, and my mom was in the room (with her view blocked) while I was assaulted. The whole thing is so twisted. If anyone has questions about Larry, I’m willing to answer....oddly enough I’ve found it rather cathartic to talk about my experience.

My only question is - how are you doing? I imagine it has to be really odd having something like this so public, so i just want to make sure you’re ok right now.

Otherwise, I’m so very sorry you were abused by this monster. I hope you and all the other victims are able to find healing and peace. :romance-caress:

He should have to deal with each and every repercussions of his heinous actions.

Thanks...it’s definitely been a weird experience. I’m actually doing relatively well. I had NO idea I had been assaulted until the story broke last year. The “treatment” felt off at the time, but I thought *I* was being perverse and making it into something that it wasn’t.

One of the hardest things has been trusting people with my daughter. She’s 1.5, and I won’t leave her with anybody except my husband and occasionally my mom. I would love a break, as she’s in a very challenging stage of toddler hood, but I just can’t bring myself to trust anyone. Larry gave off no red flags. Not one. Seemed like the most normal, nerdy “Dad” type of guy. I’ve actually struggled with even feeling bad for him at times during this process, even though I logically know he’s a terrible person.

I'm so sorry for your experiences, and I hope you find healing. :my_heart: Thank you for sharing your perspective with us. I am a lifelong fan of gymnastics and have followed college/elite-level gymnastics closely for years, and the thought that the girls I was watching had been abused like that is absolutely heartbreaking.

I just have one question that has really bothered me throughout this whole story, and I hope it doesn't come across as accusatory towards anyone...I'm just a little confused. Were parents of gymnasts actually being told that Dr. Nassar was performing this "treatment" on their daughters, and that is was medically necessary? How could parents be okay with that? It's such a disturbing concept to me. Apparently some version of his "treatment" is actually considered a legitimate therapy, but I can't believe any parent would allow their children to be touched like that, even if it would allegedly help their performance. I mean, most full-grown women are still freaked out by yearly gynecologist visits (I certainly am!)...how could they NOT be freaked out by some male sports doctor touching their young daughters...?

That’s a fair question, and doesn’t come across accusatory at all. I think some of the news reports have been unclear.

In my case (and from what I’ve heard, a lot of the other women) we were not told that the “treatment” was going to be internal. Nassar adjusted many other body parts, like shoulders and knees, through osteopathic manipulation. So I was just told he was going to “adjust” my pubic bone, which I figured would involve some pushing around my hips. I was facing away from my mom with Nassar standing between us so she couldn’t see, and I was really taken aback when he penetrated me with his gloveless fingers. But I just figured he knew what he was doing and didn’t even think to question it.

@Spartan89 I’m so sorry that happened to you. Did the “treatment” actually help your pain? I just wonder if people put up with it because it helped, or if people just thought if he couldn’t fix it no one could.

I sincerely hope that if anything good can come from this ugly situation, people become more educated about safety measures in sports. Having other people/parents present obviously isn’t enough. People need to be educated about what kind of procedures are and aren’t okay, and there has to be more oversight so this never happens again

@Spartan89 Okay, that makes a LOT more sense. And I get how athletes could be manipulated into thinking everything was fine/not wanting to rock the boat. What an evil freaking creep. I really appreciate you taking the time to respond. :my_heart:

It's almost impossible to exaggerate how much of a manipulative demon that man is.

I doubt that it did. But he never did a manipulation in isolation, it was always paired with stretches, exercises, etc. Many times he actually DID help my injuries; he was an amazing Dr, despite his evilness. People came from all over the world to be treated by him for a reason.

@Spartan89 I've been a lifelong gymnastics fan and remember seeing ads for Dr. Nassar in International Gymnast magazine in my teens and twenties. It's impossible to overestimate how revered and trusted he was in the gymnastics community. I was a competitive figure skater and can actually understand how this happened, given the procedures in place when traveling, at training camps, even at the gym. I am so sorry this happened to you and so many others, my only small consolation is that the judge in this case will make sure your torturer rots away in a cell.
