The Nauglers

From lawfulevil:

I.... I'm not so sure anyone can Cliff's Notes this one. It's just too crazy. But I'll try.

Nicole, a dog groomer, and Joe, theoretically a stay-at-home dad, are a couple with 10 (soon to be 11) children who claim to be "homesteaders" living an "off-grid" lifestyle. They're really something much closer to homeless squatters. CPS took custody of their 10 children in the past and I believe still legally has custody of 9... the oldest became a father-to-be at 17 and has since aged out.

While CPS had custody, the couple received $45,000 in donations from well-meaning strangers, designed to allow the couple to make their "homestead" a suitable place to raise a family. They lived in a hotel and ate a lot of Hardee's instead- conditions remain the same as ever.

They've had repeated run-ins with local law enforcement about basically everything, but the highlights are- their approach to sanitation is disgusting and a public health hazard, Joe has been accused of pedophilia and admits to stealing from (and being aggressive towards) the neighbors.

ETA: Or is it 11, soon to be 12? I've lost count.

From Mr. Pink:

You want a summary of the Nauglers?

Shoot. Ok. I'll give it a shot.

THE SETTING: A Kentucky homestead. The Nauglers live on about 13 acres of shitty land with electricitg or running water. They intend to live off the land but have no idea how to do so. In spring of 2015, they were living in a three-sided shack that their children had built. They have since brought a pre-fab garden shed onto the property that they are living in with most of their large family

THE PLOT: The Naugler children were removed from their home by Kentucky CPS in 2015 among allegations of neglect and an accusation involving the father telling a child to "go get the gun" during a fight with a neighbor. They were returned to their home six weeks later but the state retained legal custody. Since then, the Naugler's have been the subjects of online interest, criticism and possibly harassment. They have also been involved in more legal problems with their neighbors, which they claim is the direct result of small town corruption and involvement from online meddlers.

THE PLAYERS (ho boy):

Nicole: Mother to 10.5 and dog-groomer. Not known to take well to constructive criticism.

Joe: Father and "stay at home dad", though many have noted it looks like he does nothing around the homestead. There's strong speculation that he avoids jobs due to owing back child support for his son from a previous relationship.

Jacob: The oldest son, now 18 and a father-to-be

Quinten: Next oldest son. Likes woodworking, cooking and has recently been accused of point a gun at a neighbor

Abigail: Oldest daughter. Bought a horse

Olivia: Another daughter and keeper of babies.

Gabriel: The latest baby, who Nicole was pregnant with while the others were in custody.

5 Other Children: Nicole rarely mentions by name.

Sally Davis: Started a blog about all the Naugler drama. Considered by many Naugler critics to be a talented writer and the only speaker of the truth. Also, she's kind of an asshole.

Lisa Luthi: Critic, runs a facebook page and attends court dates

Viv: A business neighbor of Nicole's, with whom the Nauglers are feuding. Courts have become involved

Sheriff Pate: The sheriff who originally took the two oldest boys into custody. The Nauglers believe him to be very corrupt, but he seems to have handled the whole mess as calmly and rationally as possible

The Sneeds: The Naugler's neighbors, who have filed several complaints against them. Most notably, for letting their goats and horse roam freely and also from dumping raw sewage on their property.

Al WIlson: A local who....IDK....hates the Nauglers too and occasionally joins us over here at FJ to taunt us and critisize us for.... using screen names (mostly). Apparently he's sane, but I think he likes to poke fun at people online and can be pretty mean-spirited about it.

Also!

The Nauglers do not educate their children. They call it "unschooling" but really they're doing nothing (which is apparently legal in Kentucky).

They do not provide medical care for their children or the adults. Nicole gives birth at home with the children as helpers

They do no provide their children with any form of legal identity. No birth certificates or social security numbers were given for almost all of them (I think just the oldest has them?). And since they don't go to doctors or to school....there's just no paper trail that any of these children even exist (or at least there wouldn't have been, had they not been taken by CPS. Presumably they must now be in some sort of system).
