In all seriousness, I think Spurgeon will seriously resent his name one day, unless they end up naming at least 5 of their kids ridiculous names. But if he's the only one? Poor child. I honestly think Henry Wilberforce is a solid name. Middle names can be weird, but Henry is a good name- means "Ruler of the Home" according to the googles. Perhaps he'll be a strong headship... or he'll be a fussy, irritable little kid who'll drive his parents mad. They got lucky with Spurgeon. Time will tell. 

And @VelociRapture, I'm a Degreed History Professional (TM) and the Tudors, while not my area of expertise, drives me up the wall! The costumes are so inaccurate, the etiquette is all wrong, and that doesn't even begin to cover the actual events represented... I can't watch it. I just end up yelling at the screen a lot. I'm sure it's a good show for entertainment value, but I'm pedantic and nit-picky as a person, so I can't deal with it.

Sidebar: if anyone else is obsessed with historical costumes and period dramas, check out Frock Flicks. They're a blog that snark on historical inaccuracies. It's hilarious.

As a nearly qualified Degreed History Professional (TM), I totally agree! I am awful to watch historical drama with. And I won't start on historical fiction, we would be here all day! I'm off to the blog now, thanks for the tip.

This is so weird but a few hours ago I was trying to sleep and the name Henry popped into my head and I shrugged it off thinking it was too normal.

I love the name Henry. And Wilberforce goes perfectly with it.

Gonna be honest, Henry is one of my absolute least favorite guy names ever. At least for Americans. Still, it's leagues better than Spurgeon (and Wilberforce? Wtf were they thinking???)

I don't get the snarking on Wilberforce - it sounds nice enough (which is the real objection to Spurgeon) and WW was by all accounts a pretty fine chap.  It's definitely a name you could pull off as a first name, go by Will and people only think your parents were slightly eccentric.

"Unique name"?? Henry isn't a unique name honies. But I guess saying "normal first name and unique middle name" weren't special enough?

 

I can't believe part of my guess was right, even though it wasn't the right order. 

Upon seeing the thread name, I must admit the bros' names go nicely together. But again...why not Elliot Spurgeon if they're fine with Henry being the new little guy's first name? Poor Spurge. Can't even find consolation in it being a family trend.

Definitely agree that Jessa put her foot down and insisted on Henny for the first name. It's a cute name and I see last names of Christian leaders is the theme so far. Now to see if they start calling Surge Elliot and use the excuse it's easier for him and Henry to pronounce.

The smart thing to do in regards of changing Spurge to Elliot would be to wait until he's starting to talk and use the excuse he can't pronounce Spurgeon, 

My grandmother did this with like all of her kids. All the girls are known my their middle name or a shortened version of their name. Grandmother used family names as first names that she wasn't fond of to please people but got her own way by calling them by their middle names

That is unfair to Spurgeon. Henry is a handsome name. Wilberforce works as a middle name because most people don't know your middle name unless you tell them. Spud got stuck with such a weird name.

Jessa needs to name all their children if Spurgeon and Wilberforce are the best names Ben can come up with.

I tend to think of middle names as the "free skate" of baby naming. Want to name baby after great-granny, who was a sweet woman, but was named Beulah? There you go. Want to honor your Austrian heritage? Schartzmugel, there you go. But the first name? No.

The oddness of #1's first name and #2's middle name aside, is anyone else THRILLED that #2 did NOT get an "S" name?  Here's hoping the Dullards follow suit and their #2 isn't Isaiah/Isaac/Ishmael/any other boy's name that begins with an "I".

I think Wilberforce is a worse name than Spurgeon, so...I'll give mighty props to the Seewald parent who ultimately made the decision to designate Wilberforce a midden name.

Once Henry is outside the cult, because historically how many cults last into a 3rd generation, especially when education is nil and actual work is above all the adults involved, he can be known as Henry W. Seewald, brother to S. Elliot Seewald.

As someone with a very simple first name that people still mess it up, I really do feel bad for Spurgeon. He got the short end of the stick. No one is gonna miss pronounce Henry.
