Those wedding photos were immaculately posed and groomed.  Plus she's 7 years older and she's got three littles.  It's no wonder she looks different here.  

Don't have a problem with the picture itself.  They run a family business and this is marketing. If America had proper gun control laws (just my opinion), I could see a small firearms accessory manufacturer still posting a picture like this to drum up business.

I think part of this (trumpeting about Nasser and silence about #churchtoo) is partly leftover smugness. *They* would never have let their girls go into gymnastics! Very young children might have a hard time understanding the difference between a toy and a real gun.  What could possibly go wrong?

I've used guns and I do own a couple. I've had proper training. (I'd say the majority of people in the county where I live own at least one firearm). But that picture is beyond the fucking pale. 

I'm pretty uncomfortable with toy guns in general. Guns are not something to play with, and imo making them into toys encourages unsafe usage. I conceded to a couple of Wild-West style revolvers that someone gave my oldest, but he really doesn't play with them.

She always looked sickly to me. Frankly, a lot of fundie maidens look anorexic to me, but you can never tell if they're just abnormally thin.

I feel a lot of sympathy for Nadia Noor Botkin.  It must have been difficult when her father's license was revoked for sexual contact with patients.

An ex-homeschooler told me that many fundie girls she knew were anorexic because it was the one area of their life where they could exert some control.

True. It's something you can control, and you get praise and positive attention for it.

They don't really care about men's weight, but if you're above a pretty narrow weight range as a woman you clearly can't control yourself (which is a fatal flaw for someone who's either now or in the future responsible for controlling her household and her husband's wandering eye). 

As well, when you grow up in a subculture obsessed with "modest" clothing and an idealized concept of virginity, it's important not to appear too sexual. Starving yourself is one way. 0/5 stars, not recommended.

Yes to everyone who suspects some kind of disordered eating. I understand that the rates of disordered eating are higher in high-demand religions. Something that these girls--without anything else in their power--can indeed control. The whole modesty-structure, and the focus on women's looks on top of the control-outlet is just a recipe for disaster. Woops, maybe "recipe" isn't the correct word to use in this topic.

Except Stevie Maxwell, of course.  Male and female Maxwells are all subject to his food dicta.  No meat burritos for anyone!  No animal cracker binges!  NO PEPSI!!!

Beyond the focus on appearance and the one outlet for control, it's also one of the few "skills" a fundie maiden can work at, perfect, and be praised for her achievements.  A girl may not be allowed to go to college, but she can be lauded for her "healthy eating knowledge" and slimness.  

Women with higher IQ's are more likely to be anorexic.  If you're a smart fundie maiden, with little to do or to challenge your mind, I can see the appeal of memorizing calorie counts, planning your meals, calculating your BMR, charting your weight, etcetera.

As much as I've accepted that the Botkins are dipshits, I'm still surprised that they allow their kids to play with realistic toy guns. Most people I know who are really into guns don't let their young children play with those types of toy guns because it completely undermines the "guns aren't toys, guns aren't toys, guns aren't toys" mantra they want to drill into their kids since there are actual real effing guns in their house! How on earth could you expect a four year old know the difference between a black plastic revolver and a real one?
