Back to changing names, since the sea monkey hasn't arrived.

 My mum grew up with her grandmother talking about her sister every day (mum's mother had died when her sister was born, and the grandmother raised both for 18 months before my grandfather gave up the baby via private adoption.  Mum stayed with the grandparents until she was 12.)  Mum tracked her sister down when they were adults and they have been extremely close for 50 years now. Mum said it was hard to get used to calling her a different name when they met - the adoptive parents had changed it.

That's sort of what my daughter and her husband did when they adopted their two girls from China.  With the oldest, her Chinese given name is her middle name, but she has an English first name.  Her little sister's name is the same as what she was called in the orphanage and it's an adaptation of her birth name.  The oldest daughter's Chinese name was assigned by the government as she was abandoned shortly after birth.  The youngest was relinquished to the orphanage at 3 months, probably when the parents realized their baby daughter was deaf.  My son-in-law was saying last Saturday when we went out to celebrate Chinese New Year that explaining the circumstances of their first days will be difficult.  How do you tell a child that her birth parents abandoned her?  Btw, this conversation happened when my daughters had taken the little girls to the little girls' room.

Okay so both cupcakes and putting things in mason jars are two Pinterest-y trends that I'm completely over right now. So this just cements my (slightly unwarranted) hatred. That being said, she has given me an idea... vanilla cupcakes... my favorite pineapple-mandarin filling... and a bit of rum  The mason jar would keep everything contained, and clean-up would be easy. A friend who's adopted found out that her mother had kept her older child, and given her up for adoption.  Basically, bad things happened during the pregnancy, that made her feel like she just couldn't handle a baby on top of her existing kid, without everything falling apart, so adoption was the answer (don't want to get into the details, but it was a super-hard situation that happened later in the pregnancy) . 

It must have been really hard for the mother, but she felt it was best for the baby, and was also really worried that if she fell apart, both children would suffer more.

I saw in an article today that they still have no name for the second baby and have only discussed a couple times so far. I don't know why this bothers me so much. Maybe because they basically have nothing else really going on in their lives and can't find sit their butts down and choose a name that means something to them. I know plenty of extremely busy couples who find the time, even if they are undecided by the birth they still have an idea. Some wait to meet the baby with certain names picked out and waiting to see what fits. The way these two do it It seems like such an after thought. Also if your whole revolved around you being a a birthing machine you would think atleast Jessa might have some names she likes. Then again maybe that was all for show so they don't reveal the actual name until they want to?

Nope, it's just a version of 'cake in a jar'.  You bake a small cake in a canning jar.  They have been around for ever so it's not anything new.  They make great gifts to ship to someone.  You put the top on the jar before it's cool, and the canning jar seals. Problem is the icing can make 'em mushy when you ship them.
