The Handmaid's Tale on Hulu

I, too, wondered why June was so clearly waltzing around the Putnams’ house without any worries.

And I, too, don’t understand why everyone loves Elisabeth Moss. Is nobody else bothered by the fact that she is firmly entrenched in a cult in real life?

Plus she looks too much like ThatWife for me to be watch without feeling unease. I know I’ve said it a few times and I’m sorry for saying it yet again, but I can’t ignore it haha.

But I’ll keep watching.

I recently learned that the creators don't think of it as a feminist show. Ugh.

I rewatched the series. I like June less and less, but I also don't really have much in common with her. I'd like to know more about her mother, TBH.

I wish they would release 2-3 episodes at a time.

2-3 episodes at a time would be good.

I will admit, season 3 so far has been so much better than season 2. But I thought season 2 was good until about halfway through, then it went down hill.

I feel like season two got kind of tedious near the end and I actually am enjoying this season more so far.

After yesterday's episode, I'm hoping this situation with the baby doesn't become an Elian Gonzales type situation. That would be disappointing.

Love Rita, I want to see more of her this season. I want to see more of pretty much everyone except June, the Waterfords, and Aunt Lydia, to be honest.

I'm extremely disappointed that we're around halfway into S3 (not sure if it's 10 or 13 episodes this season?) and we STILL don't know anything about Rita's backstory. I know it's not book cannon, but neither is Emily's, et al. Amanda Brugel is being seriously wasted.

Elizabeth Moss, on the other hand, I'm completely sick of. And her plot armor these days is just NUTS.

Serena and June need to be allies, or not. Pick a fucking lane.

There are going to be 13 episodes f I’m what I can tell. I think they learnt their lesson with last season (releasing episode titles etc) and they’ve been a lot more tight lipped so that spoilers have been kept to a minimum.

Unpopular opinion, but I agree.  I have mixed feelings about Moss being a totally supportive CO$ member while portraying the victim of a repressive regime. CO$ is nothing if not repressive, but that aspect doesn't usually touch celebrities such as Moss. It's like she is in the Gilead commander and wife class. CO$ separates parents from children, destroys families, and also inserts itself into reproductive decisions. It's awful. I did like Moss in Mad Men.

-SPOILERS AHEAD STOP HERE IF YOU DON'T WANT TO SEE THEM!!!!!!-

The series was better when it was following the book. Now it makes little sense. Why in the world would the Waterfords have any idea where Holly is , in the entire country of Canada?  It was contrived and soap-operish how this happened. Why would June want Serena anywhere near Holly? Why would Luke agree to such nonsense? For Serena to allow the baby to escape, then try to get it back, is just crazy. I get why she doesn't defect though. She would need a name change and plastic surgery, as she would have a target on her back.

They should just rename this show The Story of June.  I know this is just entertainment, as horrible as Gilead is, but I cannot suspend enough logic and common sense to get with the program this season. Gilead is bigger than just Boston and June will never bring it down. Folks standing in burning rooms talking, other dramatic stupidity. The pace could be sped up without sacrificing anything.

I do think Emily's reunion with her wife and child was touching.

The best thing about this episode by far was the music. (Yes I am old and yes I made mix tapes and yes Sunday Bloody Sunday was probably on them).

Yet another ridiculously plotted episode.

I have many questions. Aunt Trunchbull beat the crap out of a handmaiden last episode and there were no consequences? Also, what has happened to her cane and limp?

Why would Luke agree to take Nichole/Holly to meet Serena? Why did anyone in Canada even think that was appropriate and facilitate it?

Why would there be an appeal to the Canadian government to hand Nichole/Holly back given that anyone from Gilead is a refugee in Canada and she is the product of rape as far as everyone in Canada knows. Well, everyone except for Luke now that June has told him about Nick. And that’s another question right there.

At least we are seeing the human side of Commander & Mrs Lawrence.

Handmaids can be abused however aunts see fit. We've seen tasings, eye removals, tongue removals, burnings, foot whippings, just all manner of torture including psychological. You would think breeding stock would be treated better than that. No consequences will be forthcoming.

Maybe I should have  added "in front of all the commanders and wives".

And yes as to the treatment of breeding stock. You would expect they would be revered and worshipped.

None of this makes sense. Much like Game of Thrones, this show (in my opinion) suffers from writers/directors who want to keep characters around after their stories are done. The show runners like the actress who plays Sabrina so she's still around, though it makes little sense.

I wish they would turn this into more of an ensamble type show, like Orange is the New Black style.

Does anyone know what the ropes on the commanders shoulders mean? Fred's is black while others have white.

I am anxious to see what happens tonight.

The ending of the last episode seriously pissed me off.  Are we supposed to believe that the Commander changed Serena's mind that quickly and easily?  SHE BURNED HIS FUCKING HOUSE TO THE GROUND.  And now she's back on his side?  I know Serena is the Queen of Flip-Flops, but come ON.

The big reveal in this last episode was big stupid.

Spoiler

What the fuck did June expect of Nick? Did she really expect him be as pure as the driven snow? Did the Swiss delegates expect the same, or were they just fucking with her?

Do we have to use spoiler boxes for episodes that have already aired? I will, but I’m not sure what the general consensus is?

Spoiler

Beautiful camera work and styling in the last episode. It was stunning.

Those American monuments being ruined were pretty powerful (the statue of Abraham Lincoln and the tall one which was made into a cross - not sure what they’re called, but I know they’re important).

I think the Swiss delegates lied to June to protect Nick and that he is going to become an informant for them. Of course they’ll lie to everyone about it. They’re not going to announce it openly.

The metal silencers were so upsetting, but last season dipped into being torture porn a few times and I hope they don’t go back there. I get it - they want to show how bad it is - and I know there was nothing in the book which hasn’t happened in real life. But are they still sticking with that idea?

I really hope that the ‘big twist’ happens soon.

Dunno what the rule of thumb with spoilers after airing is here, but I'm putting anything that I think might give away too much for anyone who hasn't watched yet at the moment.

Spoiler

I hadn't considered that the Swiss delegates might have lied about Nick to June.

I'm also hoping this season doesn't become torture porn too.

Regarding Emily’s fraught relationship with her wife: Remember that she was forced to undergo FGM as punishment for being a “gender traitor,” so the prospect of intimacy may be traumatizing her.

I agree that the plot seems to be all over the place, and that the Luke/Holly/Serena thing is illogical: are the Gilead expats in Canada restricted to a particular zone? That would be the only explanation.

And thanks for the term “plot armor”: it explains what’s going on with June, and the fact that logically she’d have been on the wall the minute after she gave birth to Holly.

Still, I’m enjoying going along for the ride.

@Dreadcrumbs I *hope* they lied to her!

Also, I did some pretty intense digging and I am about 90% confident that there are 13 episodes this season. If you want to do any digging for yourself, be careful - there are LOTS of significant spoilers out there.

Spoiler box contains info about the content of future seasons.

Spoiler

I also found out that there will be 8-10 seasons. I don’t know if I can last that long. Too much torture.

The long long long run of seasons will delve into the fall of Gilead and will cover about a 15 year span - basically they will go VEEERRRYYYYY slowly over the last few pages of the book.

They will not align with The Testaments.

I'd like to say I wouldn't watch 6-7 seasons but I would for the same reason I'm on FJ.

Not using a spoiler box. Step away if you still haven't seen episode 6.

I get the imagery of the wired mouths. But the logic is all wrong. Unless the wires are piercings like earrings and can be removed they make no sense. Are they part of the uniform to be worn only in public?

Otherwise how are these women, supposedly there for breeding purposes, and therefore required to be at peak health, going to eat?

And when they do get pregnant, morning sickness would be magnificent when you can't vomit.

Shark. Jumped.  Again.

I don't think the writers are 100% sure what they're doing and where they're going.

I want to see more of Moira, Emily, and Eleanor though.

ETA: At this point, I think I'm just here for the characters I like or think are interesting.

I don't understand why folks who haven't watched are in the thread. In any case, I'm not aware of any rules.

I read on Reddit that the rings are removable according to the producer.

Fair game after the episode airs, though, it's best to not be a jerk and scream JUNE KILLED FRED* a la SNAPE KILLED DUMBLEDORE 30 seconds after the episode airs, and keep in mind that those in earlier time zones possibly haven't seen the thing yet.

tl;dr: don't be an asshole.

*Bullshit spoiler as far as I know. I'm still way back on ep 3.

It airs in Australia about 24 hours after the US - I just avoid the thread so that I don’t see spoilers.

I don’t like ofMatthew very much at all. What a prig.
