First Grandson Special

I thought she was in the tub at the end.

There was a toilet paper holder to her left, so she was on the toilet. I'm glad the sink vanity gave her some measure of privacy from the cameramen.

I'm watching a rerun right now, and they just did the "I LOVE being home and getting things ready for Josh, etc." It would probably be an innocuous statement from someone else, but you know they just had to reinforce their personal gender roles at least once in the episode.

When she says this, I wonder if it's a veiled comment about not wanting to be at the car lot all day, trying to entertain Mack. This way, she can be at home, play w/ her baby, get things done, etc. If she puts a "getting things ready for Josh" spin on it, so be it. She'd still have to take care of all of those home chores (cooking, cleaning, laundry, etc.) even if she was working at the car lot, so this way she has time during the day to do it.

For some reason, and I'm probably just projecting, I got the impression that she was just really happy to be home ALONE, just doing her own thing, chillin' (lol) with her kid. I probably give Josh a lot more benefit of the doubt than most people here, but still, I suspect he'd be a lot easier to stomach--uh, I mean, live with if you weren't with him 24/7.

We also had somebody who knew the family post about them shunning kids back before everyone found Suze's facebook and such. Things can change in families depending on how well people are getting along. Back before my son was born I was very close to my MIL but since he was born every chance she gets to undermind me with how we raise him she does while making passive agressive remarks to me. She likes to be in control of everyone so when we didn't have kids then I was willing to do things her way but now with our son if they're not eating dinner until 9 pm we are going home and not hanging out all night with a fussy baby. Anna's parents could be similar and while their kids were toeing the line around the wedding everything was great but once they started getting away from the church and the son listening to his wife instead of comanding her then things got nasty.

Not that I think Anna's parents are horrible people. I think they want everyone to get a long but they aren't willing to compromise on their children breaking rules that they see as important such as a man commanding a woman.

There is a definite split between Suze and Anna since Anna started excluding her family to "play nice" with the Duggars and TLC. I get the impression that Daniel has no interest in dipping his toe in the TLC pool at all, and Suze probably doesn't like having TV producers dictate her relationship with her sister when she's only been peripherally involved in the show. Maybe they feel resentful toward their parents because they feel that their parents have taken Anna's "side".

There's no way to know for sure, which is why I try to say that the Kellers have "supposedly" or "allegedly" shunned their children...it could be poor behavior from both sides. But just because they run a prison ministry doesn't mean that they show grace to their children. Even in the prison situation, they have the opportunity to be "above" the prisoners, even if they don't treat them that way. We know that they are an ATI/patriarchal family based on their direct quotations from the show, and the men who live that lifestyle like to be in control, especially of their families.

Do you think Anna is unique as a fundie in that she doesn't seem to care that she had a room full of people watching her give birth? Or, will all the Duggar girls be equally open to having the cameramen so up close and personal during their labors?

Once all the Duggar kids are married and reproducing, they can have a new show "Duggars Give Birth and Counting" and we can have a new episode every week!

I can believe the Kellers shun their "disobedient" adult children. Suze is breaking every rule in the fundie handbook. She's going to school, dating, and dressing immodestly. According to their beliefs, she should still be under her father's headship. They probably think that she is hellbound.

The Duggars are probably making a big deal over the first grandson because he will be the one to carry on the Duggar name. Mackynzie, in a way, is a temporary Duggar. Eventually, she will get married and change her last name and be part of another family. Unless she totally rebels and keeps her name (or remains single, becomes a lesbian, etc.) the Duggar name will not continue with her. I think it's kind of weird to make a big deal out of it, though. He may be the first grandson, but it's highly unlikely that he'll be the only grandson.

I watched the rerun later last night around midnight and had to chuckle when a couple of commercials for "penthouse tv" channel came on, then a different one for playboy. You have to wonder what they'd think if they knew those kinds of ads were running in between segments of their show.

I think it's probably just because "first grandson" sounds a lot more significant than "second grandchild". I imagine they'd make a big deal out of a first granddaughter if she was born second. There's really not much interesting about this otherwise.

No! The don't watch tv, remember [wink, wink, nudge] Like when they put the birth control commercials on during the show a few years ago.

2. I was watching old 17 Kids episode! MY GO.....has Josh Porked out!!! Step back from the Chicken'etti pan, big boy!! Lazy, Lazy, Lazy--get some exercise! Poor Anna looked huge on Today, but it's totally understandable. 2 kids 2 fast..

3. Anna had the baby on the toilet?? On the toilet on tv?? Replay the Modesty Lectures, please! How is that poor kid going to feel know he was POOPED out, not POPPED out on national tv into the can??? ICK! EEWWWWWW.....Poor, poor kid.

One of the longer specials was sponsored by Plan B. I thought that was actually pretty clever, like saying "if you don't want to end up like this, use plan B". I don't see how the porn is connected though. I am actually surprised that the Duggars don't try to control what kind of advertising is used during their shows. JB is a major control freak and already makes sure they edit out all the bad stuff, so I'm surprised he would let this one slide.

Delivering on the toilet is actually quite common. I know a few people who have done so, one because it was the most comfortable place she could find to bear down, and the others because they wanted to try and poop before pushing. And birth isn't sanitary, not matter where you are. Sure, a clean space is infinitely better than out in a field or something, but the bathroom isn't so bad. I think in poor Anna's case, she was afraid to push, not because of the furniture because a whole lot more is going to come out with the baby, but because she did not want to shit on the floor right in front of her MIL, Jill, and a camera/sound crew. Can't say I blame her.

What I can't reconcile is how a woman who won't even show an inch of skin while getting an ultrasound seems to be just fine with being filmed in those awkward Bradley exercise positions and birthing babies.

Also, I have no real opinions on what a woman chooses WRT birth. There are strong arguments for both sides, and as long as a woman is properly educated and informed and can make the best choice for her situation, I support it.

1. Josh taking a nap was absolutely ridiculous. How can any good, caring husband even CONTEMPLATE taking a nap while his wife is in labor? It's one thing if she's not dialated or anywhere near end stages, but hours into a hard, stressful labor? What a jackass.

2. She screamed, "Thank you, Jesus," over and over again. I'm being a huge, disgusting cynic, but do you think she screamed the same thing when she got knocked up? ;)

3. Her saying "Michael," was the sweetest thing I've ever seen. Too bad it was while she was on a toilet, surrounded by cameramen and in-laws.

4. I completely agree with Squirrely-- how the hell is it ok to be seen with her husband between her legs (at the birthing class), but not ok to wear pants?

That is what I figured too. Plus, I am not sure how much control the Duggars have over the naming of the episodes and the specials. It will be interesting to see how they spin all the other 259732987 births that are going to happen.

Get ready for 19 Kids and Counting: The First Granduggar born to a woman wearing a yellow shirtt in a blue house in Ohio!

As far as the speculation about Anna's family's troubles goes, both Susanna and Daniel have posted on their Facebook pages about how much they love their mom. I wouldn't be surprised if the friction is more between their father and themselves. I also wouldn't be surprised if Dad, being the patriarch and all, won't let Mom visit her wayward children, and in keeping with the obedient wife role, she doesn't challenge him. Suze and Daniel probably understand how Mom is stuck between a rock and a hard place, and don't hold any grudge against her. I can picture a scenario where they call home when they know Dad is going to be out.

NIKE! You said the S word and have thoroughly defrauded. Honestly, I have no idea how these people's brains operate. It wouldn't really surprise me either way.

It occurred to me that Anna allowing her births to be filmed might be her thumbing her nose to the fundie thinking that women shouldn't work. Both Anna and her mother have worked doing prison ministry. By allowing her births to be filmed, Anna is providing for her family in a way that Josh can't. The very special episode wouldn't have been nearly as popular if it had just been a talking head Josh relaying what had happened the night before.

T

his is the most juvenile thing I've ever read.

I wrote it and I agree, but given it's the Duggars and we've been treated to "poohing" full toilets, Green Poop etc....it's what came to mind!! Forgive the lack of manners!

I haven't found it yet--not on Amazon etc. It's being rebroadcast so that may be holding it up....

I don't think the believe women shouldn't work. I think they believe women shouldn't do work that isn't directly related to/supervised by their husband. You'll also notice that unmarried kids in a lot of these families in their mid-20s and early 30s are still living at home, working in the family business.

I agree that the first grandson emphasis was more an attempt to make it seem new and special and not just, "Josh and Anna had a baby. Been there, done that." If it had been a girl, I'm sure they would have hyped it just as much and done "Mackyizie's First Little Sibling" or something and Josh would have talked about how special it is to have two children instead of just one.
