"RadicalFemininity," a treasure trove of fundie cliches

Being from Arkansas, I'm very familiar with people having misconceptions about my home state. :pb_lol:

It does bug me when people assume everyone is super racist in Arkansas. Racism is absolutely a problem, but 1) the type of blatant, KKK-style racism people seem to imagine isn't very common and 2) there's plenty of racism in the north too! Racism is hardly just a southern problem.

John Oliver's segment this week was on school segregation and it turns out that schools in the south are actually the least segregated in the country, while the most segregated schools are in New York City.

She says, "do you know how many mamas and babies die or are injured in hospitals?"

Omg her ignorance is causing me contact embarrassment! She sounds like a child afraid to go to the doctor. Of course lots of women and babies die in hospitals! That's where you go when you are extremely ill or give birth. You aren't going to stay home if you have pre eclampsia or are hemorrhaging. That's like saying, "do you know how many car accidents take place on roads?!? That's why you should always avoid roads and only drive in pastures!"

Her critical thinking skills are non existent.

I really want to suggest that the next set of twins be named Correlation and Causation.

Oh wait, that wouldn't work, because, a la Erika Shupe, they treat twins as one person anyway.  Never mind then.

The Mojave Desert sucks, and artichokes are awesome. #californiagirl

(I hate deserts in general - not just the Mojave.)

I live in a place where it snows, and it blows people's minds all the time, because people's visions of SoCal include palm trees and beaches, not snowstorms.

My brother lives in Atlanta. The first winter there it snowed and only three people showed up for work, him and two other Northerners.

My step brothers live in the Caribean. I remember them expieriencing snow for the first time. It's overwhelming.

So Hannah has shared her opinion on this election, albeit with a disclaimer.

Quote

Disclaimer: this is written from the perspective of a Bible believer, for fellow Bible believers.  There are a thousand different angles from which one can view this election and the surrounding issues.  I’m addressing it from a Biblical background.  If you want to argue with me, make sure you bring your Scriptures. ;)

Basically, she thinks that, "We have an election between wicked people because we live in a wicked nation." which actually seems to be a fairly popular opinion these days.

I did think this paragraph was kind of funny.

Quote

I recently saw an exchange on Facebook where someone was asking for good movie recommendations.  One of the comments was from a woman who mentioned the name of a series and said she hadn’t seen it but her teenage daughter had watched it with a church group and they thought it was really good.  I was curious so I did a little research and found that the movie included affection scenes between a homosexual couple.

Let me get this straight.  People are upset about the supreme court ruling to allow homosexual marriages.  And yet you welcome it into your homes and churches via the media and give it positive reviews?

Can you believe that a church group watched something that had a scene depicting homosexual affection? The horror!

I do wonder what series they were watching. Would Downton Abbey be too scandalous for a church group? I know a lot of conservative people who really liked it despite it having a couple scenes with gay men. I watched the first two seasons with my parents and they loved it but they still had to shout "gross" during the scene with the kiss.

I also like how she blames unrighteous people like that woman for the choices this election and then says

Quote

Most importantly of all, please stop the blame and the pointing fingers.

@Rachel333, I saw that post too.

Here's my favorite part:

People are angry over Trump’s statements about women and sex – and yet 40 million American people visit porn sites regularly.  Why are you upset about him verbalizing what the majority of people are thinking?

The ignorance.  Trump's statements aren't just about "women and sex".  Trump continually makes derogatory remarks to women in his speeches, and his words on the 2005 tape are describing sexual harassment.  Does she honestly believe the majority of people enjoy harassing women?  Porn viewing does not automatically = thoughts of sexual harrasment

It's like that meme I've seen on FB: "If women are so offended by Donald Trump's dirty words, then who the hell bought 80 million copies of Fifty Shades of Gray?"

That is a disgusting meme. The BDSM community is made of consenting adults. Not one accuser consented to Trump groping them. That's why it's sexual assault. That meme is not only ignorant but just another example of the rampant rape culture in his country.

A lot of people did have issues with Fifty Shades of Gray! But even so, reading about something like that is different than the reality of actually *being* groped without consent.

They want to focus on "dirty words" as if everyone is angry that Trump said the word pussy :pb_rollseyes:

Consent is something toddlers can learn, but apparently a lot of adults still lack an understanding.

That's the point of the meme. Some commentators act like women took issue with Trump's statements because women are too delicate to hear people talk about sex, or something. But of course lots of women love to hear "dirty talk," the issue is whether or not it's consensual.

Coincidental thread - I stumbled across the hillbillies blog yesterday, thought the family seemed interesting, but forgot to bookmark the site. Thanks for the reminder!  I didn't go properly down the rabbit hole as I was actually trying to find a different blog, but hopefully I'll have time tomorrow.

The 'never accept medical treatment or you are limiting God' concept is horrid and wrong and harmful and stupid and terrible.  IMHO.

From the anti-healthcare post -- I just have to say that exasperated ≠ exacerbated. SUCH a pet peeve. Two totally different words with entirely different meanings.
Hospitals DO tend to have lots of awful things going on in them (my husband works in a level one trauma center in an urban area) -- VoVs getting treated, drug ODs, alcohol poisoning, GSWs. But the hospitals aren't bad. They're treating the results of people's bad actions -- rapists' victims, domestic abusers' victims, gang members' victims, etc. Anyway.
None of that is a reason to avoid a hospital if you need one. The staff successfully fights off death every night (and sometimes doesn't succeed) and faces traumas many people can't even imagine, and they do it with a grace and compassion that the average fundy couldn't scare up if they tried. I'm really bugged that these people have the NERVE to call hospitals "wicked places."

I wish I could like this 4,000 times. Reading that post made my jaw drop in the worst way.

It upsets me every time I think about it.

When I saw some of the negative comments that were posted on that blog after I linked to it here I felt bad for a little bit, but then I realized that the advice they're giving is downright dangerous. It's not far-fetched at all to say that women could die following their advice. I still don't like that one comment I screencapped earlier, but if a little negative attention makes them shut down their blog (and I don't think it will--they've had people leaving negative comments long before their blog was linked here), that would be a good thing!

Most people would have the good sense to ignore bad medical advice (ie in the form of the radical anti-vaxxers). SO many websites out there dishing out dangerous advice, we can't shut them all down.

I just don't understand the hatred of hospitals and medical care. Birth has been throughout history a dangerous and deathly process. Without modern medicine, many children would not survive birth let alone infancy. Of course, if one wants to opt out and have a "natural" or home birth without intervention, it's still good to be within reach of a hospital in case of unforeseen complications. If you'd rather a baby or mother die from preventable causes, how is that remotely "pro-life"?

Many many years ago I read an anecdote in Reader's Digest.... The writer told a  very Proper Bostonian Lady that she (the writer) had been raised in Iowa, and the PBL replied,,"my dear, we pronounce that  OH  HI  OH, out here."

And there is really little to no evidence that ultrasounds present any great danger to a fetus.

Dragging this up from pg. 3, but seriously, this. They really think an ultrasound is going to somehow hurt a fetus? If a bat flies by and cheeps at a pregnant woman's stomach, is the baby harmed?:my_huh:  What about dolphins? What about them spiffy animal vocalizations that are below the range of human hearing instead? Are all the mommies in Africa in mortal danger from elephants calling to each other across the plains?

  • 2 weeks later...

There's a new post, a tribute to their oldest sister: http://radicalfemininity.com/2016/11/24/4957/ It's a sweet thing to do for a sister, but a couple things caught my eye.

Mostly...

Quote

When Hannah was 22 months, she remembers eating popcorn with the midwife after Tommy, her 12 pound brother was born.  For all of you cringing, Ima (who has only had natural births) says his was the easiest of them all!  I love the picture below.  How is an 18 pound girl supposed to hold her 12 pound brother?

Holy crap, a 12 lb baby? Evidently things went all right, but that seems like a scary home birth. When babies are that big you've got to wonder about gestational diabetes, but these people don't go to doctors so I wonder if they would know if they had it.

Quote

Perhaps one of the greatest blessings about my sister, is her example of wanting the Father’s best for her- and everyone else’s lives.  Especially when it comes to guys.  Her love and commitment to her future husband is rare, challenging and special… I know she will make some guy an incredible wife one of these days

This is typical for fundies, but it just sounds kind of funny to talk about a strong love and commitment for an imaginary person. (I'm talking about the future husband here, not trying to get into the issue of whether a deity exists or not. :pb_lol:
