And Sanders near success showed that maybe America is ready for more progressive ideas and measures that Clinton being a conservative won't enact.

Sanders was at times a threat to Clinton (thanks to many progressive thinking Millennials) - but IMO he wasn't ever viable as a national candidate.  I mean, in the USA "Liberal" is a dirty word.  You have to understand that  "Progressive" or "Socialist" are expletives here.  Damn it -  Trump might have won in a landslide if this race had been Sanders versus Trump!

Clinton isn't "conservative" exactly.  This situation is so polarized that it isn't easy to  explain.  She is actually a centrist.  Standard "moderate" and "hawkish" on foreign policy (more than some progressives want).  Her policy plans appeal most to the middle of the road Democrats.

Trump is actually right about one of his claims - we are looking at 4 more years of Obama politics. Now that isn't that bad domestically (and is a damn sight better than Trump's plans) but is not necessarily satisfactory for those who are further left of center.

If the Democrats do manage to take the presidency, the House, and the Senate, it would give them a progressive mandate.

I think that if this happens (IF) we will see some slightly left of center domestic policies go through under Clinton.  It will be business as usual with foreign policy though.

A lot of left leaning Democrats are holding their noses and voting for Clinton.  Not just to oppose Trump, not just because of her serious baggage, but mainly because she is so middle of the road Democrat.  She isn't "progressive" really.

I think it would be good to see a viable more progressive party form - it might be the Green party becoming a serious option.  Although, sorry.  Jill Stein, is/was not a good advertisement for the Green party. :(

Back in 2012, the election pist-mortem said that the Republicans are viewed as racist and out of touch in a nation that is becoming browner.

Exactly. The GOP is terrible out of touch with the nation. Their racists, anti-gay, anti-women views are going to appeal to a smaller and smaller amount of this country. They will have to make drastic changes, but I don't know if it isn't too late for that. Nominating Trump drove people like my parents who are conservative Christian Republicans to vote for a Democrat.

The Republican party has fucked up big time and it will be interesting to see what happens.
