Not sure why starting your own tree trimming business might be seen as better than finding employment as a dental hygenist, accountant, engineer, paralegal, teacher, librarian, etc.  T

As I recall, it has something to do with a biblical quote about not working for someone else. Has to do with authority, and being beholden only to God, etc.. which might have worked in the time of the Old Testament, but now, you almost can't work unless you are working FOR someone!

I've seen the same argument on "My big fat american gypsy wedding."  It doesnt make much sense to me, even Gothard has employees... and the Catholic Church... and every other church...

MY Big Fat American Gypsy Wedding.. or Toddlers and Tiaras...

I watch these shows, and they make my stomach turn, and I think, "Can they possibly really be that vulgar? or that stupid? or that vain?" Or is this just BAAAAD reality television? Or both?

I want to watch it, but get so disgusted with myself, I turn it off, but then go to watch it again.

I think there is often a general perception for a lot of (US) Americans that starting your own business is admirable. Not necessarily above working for someone else, but it has a certain appeal for being independent and self-starting.  I think if there is a common culture in the US it is based on the idea that people come here with nothing and can achieve anything through hard work and perseverance. Am I saying this is true? No, but I think that idea makes being an entrepreneur seem like a higher achievement. It's all perception, my mom had her own business for years and went back to working for someone else because it was a lot less stress. I doubt anyone thought less of her for that, I know I didn't. In the end supporting your family is what matters and I have no respect for Gil Bates or JB because grifting is not work at all.

When the kids have all left home, the TTH is going to be a dinosaur. Impossible to sell. Who wants a house that big with only three bedrooms?

You gut the inside and turn it into a several different townhouses, or tear down the house and expand the dump across the road.

I have my own business. (I'm a dog walker/ pet sitter). It took a long time till got off the ground.  However, I'm not married I don't have kids. If I was or if I had children I wouldn't be one because working for yourself is hard and sometimes your income varies from month to month.

My husband lost his job at age 50, a year ago. The company had problems and had to reformat themselves. When he applied for new ones, he was told either, "We can't hire someone who made that much money, even though you're willing to take what we're offering," or "You have only a two year degree (from 30 years ago,)" even though that was a specialized degree which gave him four years of major credits, plus of course, he spent 30 years in the industry...

So he started his own business. It's been tough, but he aged out of the corporate market. He cut out the middle man and can charge a bazillion dollars an hour, but still, can accept jobs only of a certain size. Yes, it is stressful. We know plenty of other people in a similar position.

Sometimes I imagine how well he'd have done if he started this a dozen years ago. He wouldn't be told he's too old for his own job. He'd hire the women he fought to hire against the admonishments of owners who thought they'd all leave to have babies, and for whom he fought for the right to the same pay as the men. Maybe someday he still can, but he's kind of tired of it all.

Life choices are generally not easy to make blanket statements about.

As to Gil, I have no idea who, if anyone, he cuts trees for. If he's half-smart, he works for government contracts. But my dad was a painting contractor and was often underbid by union shops. Where he made his money was doing specialty jobs for rich people. I suppose at the least, his sons will have a skill they can hire themselves out for, even if they end up supporting Kelly and Gil even more when they do it... ::eyeroll::

Also must have as many children as possible, even if you do not want more.

Or even if multiple doctors have told you that having any more children could (1) make it more likely that at least one will have some awful genetic disorder (simply because odds) or (2) kill you (because your body can't handle it).

Did anyone else notice the weird porn music when Jinger was saying goodbye of Jeremy and they were whispering "babe"? Or am I just reading way too into the soundtrack. Also, a little doodad just came up on the screen saying, "how many times did Jinger call Jeremy babe?" or something to that effect. Whyyyyy

Counting on "A Big Surprise" - Part 1

OH FFS... the snarky things I want to say about this title but shouldnt (but will, stay tuned!)

We open with a reminder of last week - where they printed out diplomas from "Duggar Academy"... and JInger cuddles Jeremy in public.  This time Jeremy is coming to "surprise" Jinger and Binjermin is on the deal. FLAME is back! And now we have him in heavy machinery! Clearly this man has no dignity.  Return of the Taco place...

At jessa's house they unload the dishwasher.  Jessa is taking Jinger out.  Ben tells us that its only been 2 days since last episode. Jeremy is coming to surprise him.  Jessa toasts bread IN THE OVEN and cracks eggs.  Bin holds spurge.

We're treated to a recap of the fact that JInjermy are courting.

Jessa feeds spurge eggs.

Jessa tells us that Jeremy and Bin are "really good friends" and its "kinda too fast" that they're courting.

Bin says bye to spurge and heads out to get jeremy.  They're going to look at rings.

Jessa says courtship can be short or long, it depends on "where the people are."

Bin pulls up and gets in the car.  Jeremy is "trying to keep jinger at bay" with the text (clearly they arent at the "find my friends" stage of their clinginess).

Jeremy TH - I've been thinking about the ring for a few weeks.  I've known her for a year, I've spent "days and days" visitng the family...

Bin calls "pops" and puts jeremy on the speakerphone.  Jeremy invites boob to go look at rings.  Boob agrees and says its a "big step."

Jeremy TH - I really respect Mr. Duggar and dont want to do anything behind his back.  I want to include him.

They arrive at the jewelry store.  The owner knows Bin.  Boob shows up.

Bin explains they have a "tradition" at that jewelry store. Flashback to all the other menfolk (not josh) buying rings there.  Its "awesome" that jeremy is keeping the tradition alive.

Jeremy wants something "simple" but elegant.  He has a picture of a ring on his phone.  He says the Jessa tipped him off that she wants white gold princess cut and the ring size. She's a 5 1/2.

Jessa TH - I told jinger that I needed to get my ring size checked because pregnancy...

Jeremy looks at a 1/2 karat ring and buys it.  He just cant let it go because it reminded him of Jinger.  It just HAPPENS to be the right size (NO WAY!)  It must be jebus.

Jeremy calls his mom and tells her that he's at the store and theres a beautiful ring and its "jinger" so he asks what she thinks... and wants to "check" to see what she thought (is mommy paying for the ring???)  Mom says she'll text him back.

Bin TH - when he first said he wanted to go he was just thinking about cuts.  Now it sounds like he wants it.

Duggar drinking game for the episode:. Drink every time Jinger says "Babe". Do a shot whenever one of them goes all Gollum and says "Preeeeeeecoiusss"'.

Counting on - SURPRISE! We're admitting this entire thing is a sham! Part 2

Back at the jewelry store Jeremy continues to fondle the ring in ways that make boob look uncomfortable.   He says it "screams jinger to me."

Bin ponders if they will see a "newly engaged couple in not too long."

Back at the TTH... Jinger sprays too much hairspray on her head and they head to "tacos for life!" Jinger tells us how much she misses jeremy.

In the car, Jinger tells Jessa all about the trip.  He had flowers, it was "precious."   There is an AMAZING amountof shit in the back of the car.

They arrive and jessa is "acting normal" and they order.... get an appetizer...

Bin and Jeremy are 18 minutes away, but they're late... There is a weird neon yellow disc on Jeremy's lap.

Jeremy is nervous that Jinger will be suspicious.  Jessa had set up a table for them in advance with the "restaurant" and made sure that her back will be to the door.  They banter about how hot it is in texas and how Jeremy got a bigger apartment.  Jinger now has a general idea of life.

Back in the car the boys discuss what Jinger's reaction may be.

Jessa asks Jinger how she feels.  Jinger is excited and ready for whatever.  It feels like she's known him andhe's her best friend.  They dont know the timeline.

Jessa TH - parents love jeremy but jinger is the first girl to move far from home.  It will be hard to see her go.

The men pull up to the taco shop.  They park - jeremy has the neon disc.  They go in through the kitchen...

Jessa banters... best friends... blah blah blah...

Jeremy grabs the food from the kitchen.  They walk out...

Jinger is always looking at Jeremy's lips and vice versa. It is so painfully obvious they want to kiss and it's odd seeing people not kiss when they naturally would.

Bin really just ate Jinger's taco...

How creepy of the little bro (JD? Jed? I cannot tell them apart) says he has to go chaperone his sister and her TWENTY EIGHT YEAR OLD BF.  Beyond .... my... comprehension.

Wait, what? Is "Central America" closer to Arkansas than Texas all of the sudden?

Could it mean that Jill and family may adventually come back and Jinger might be down in Texas permanently.

Counting on - "SURPRISE!" No one believes that any of this is a surprise - part 3

The menfolk come out of the kitchen with the food. Jinger is sitting shockingly still.  She sees jeremy and ZOMG FRONT HUG! TWICE!  Then she kinds half side hugs him and puts her face on his chest.   She says she was "shocked."

JInger TH - It was the best thing ever

Jessa TH - It was amazing.

Jinger's voice is a full octave higher... she says she's dreaming.  Bin eats Jinger's taco.

Bin TH - I was hungry.

Jinger says BABE way too many times.

They all sit and Jinjermy kind of side cuddle in the restaurant.  The green thing is now on the table.

JInger wants to go on a double date.  Its amazing because she's seen others do it and now its her.

Jessa says they should "hang out with all the graduates and they can be your chaperones."

Another day... they're going to "locomotion" to play with bumper cars, go carts etc.  Jer/Jed/Joy are "chaperoning."

They pull off in the race cars and drive... Jeremy thinks they wanted to see his competitive nature.

Jeremy - when I realized that Jer wasnt going to give me an inch I backed off to let jinger take over.

JOy - it was fun to see his competitive spirit take over

jinger - we're here to have fun.

Jeremiah thought the checkered flag meant stop... WTF??? He slams on his brakes. I'm so glad he got that homeskool degree without learning what a fucking checkered flag means...

After go carts they go to bumper boats.  Jinger decides for them to get in the same boat.  The twins decide thats a license to get them wet.

Joy - "bless his heart" jeremy didnt mind getting wet but Jinger didnt want to and he was trying to protect her.

Jinger - we decided to get out because they showed no mercy.

They exchange "I love yous."

JInger TH - It was amazing.  Maybe next time he visits he'll have another surprise.

At Jessa's House

Bin tells us flame and crystal are coming to have a cook out.  We're treated to shots of flames "music."

Bin - I listed to the music a year ago and I appreciated the content of th music and we became friends.  We went to visit them... Flashback to bin rapping... Jessa's bangs.

They arrive and front hug.

Bin TH - We have a lot in common - fiath - but our backgrounds are really different.  I want them to undertand life in the counrtry.

Bin is going to grill (charcoal).  They bring a brand new grill out into the driveway and dump coals into it.  Bin lights it.... flame mumbles something about being flame.

The wimminz cut veggies.  Jessa says bin has been doing summer classes and stays up cramming.  He's only working part time so they have family time.

Bin reads the instructions on the lighter fluid... he guesses how many ounces of fluid there is. He wonders if you spray the lighter fluid after its already on fire... he was trying to remember... theyread the directions on the coal... They mess around with the coals.

Bin tells flame about his football camp idea... he's doing it in a few weeks.

Flashback to them wandering around st louis.

Bin TH - that visit inspired me and gave me ideas. Coaches can mentor kids that dont have a father or a mother in their life.

Flame likes the idea

Bin will have t shirts and backpacks. Flame offers cds.

They bring food inside (wrapped in foil).  Jessa says nothing was burnt or overcooked.

Spurge eats some...

Bin - tomorrow maybe we can go to a music store and get jessa a keyboard.  Then we can go to the TTH and help the boys iwth a project (heavy machinery).
