We do! Okay, it is a much smaller piece of carpet, but it keeps the pebbles and dirt from being tracked into the tent. With that many littles, it would make tenting far more comfortable.

I have seen it done when I was a scout too, it is not purely an Erika thing. I think I would have considered it too if camping with kids, buy a cheap ikea door mat and use that outside the tent. I must say I like her shoe rack she has used in previous camping trips, not a bad idea.

It actually looks like not a bad trip. It's really nice to see the Shupe kids interact with kids other than their siblings.

I totally agree @Coy Koi! I really enjoy seeing Karen and Melanie in the pictures and reading their updates so much. While it may seem like a small thing, I'm so happy that they're able to wear clothing that they feel comfortable in. I think it'll set a good precedent for their younger siblings, too. Out of all of the fundie kids I read about on this website, in my heart of hearts Karen and Melanie are the ones that I am truly hopeful about. I know we don't know them but they're the two that I've really come to root for the most.

Karen is in shorts and Bob is in a tank top.

What's next?

Real sugar in cocoa? (spelling cocoa properly?) Adequately feeding your children? Not writing "chuckle" and "smirk" all the time?

THE APOCALYPSE?!

But seriously, good for them for loosening up.

Edited to add that holy shit, I can't believe Karen is in jeans and a leather (or faux leather) jacket. She's like a fundie biker babe.

I am really loving these changes in the Shupes.  So many tank tops!  Shorts! A leather jacket!  Jobs!

Snark-free, for once.  It's amazing to see a fundie family start some serious improvements -- the superficial exterior is one thing, but if Karen has a job, I bet Melanie isn't all that far behind.  Wonder if the older girls are going to head out to the community college system soon...I'd definitely *cheer* *for that.

*sorry, couldn't help myself.  :my_angel:

The Shupes have actually been OK with tank tops for a while. The boys wear them a lot in the summer, and the girls wear them fairly often too, or the twins wear sleeveless dresses without a t-shirt underneath à la the Duggars.

I agree with comments about Karen and Melanie. They're gonna do a lot better than many fundie teens when they're grown adults/out of the house.

And WOAH. In that photo of Karen with the dog she looks very like Erika. I've never noticed it that much before. The twins are starting to look a lot like Anna Marie too.

Erika needs to freaking update, because it's almost the start of a new school year, and I need to know about their schedules. I want to read all about color coding things and how she gives out stickers. I'd even like to hear more about how cows eat grass and are all muscle, and since humans are just like cows, we should eat green smoothies.

My name is princessmahina and I have a serious fascination with this crazy lady.

I'm not a super neat freak, but when we took the kids camping, we kept a section of tarp at the opening of the tents for a door mat, and I also always brought a little broom to sweep things out every day. It's just more comfortable.

I have mixed feelings about men over a certain age in tank tops. The bigger and better part of me says "sure, you do you, and get comfortable, yay! " But that other part of me says "that's not a great look." I'm occasionally horrible.

It depends on what the man in the tank top looks like. There's 20 year olds who look GROSS in a tank top and 60+ who look fantastic.

We do too! - and keep a broom around to sweep it off. We also keep a folding chair on the carpet so us older peeps don't fall over just trying to put shoes on, lol.

The guinea pigs in the dry plastic swimming pool made me gasp, but hey I prefer loving them the next day and not have to scrounge around looking for kibbles, 'n bits in the bushes that the wild animals were nice enough to leave.  To the Shupes credit, "They were a friend's."

Just looked at the camping photos -- yet another normal outing? Including friends, not just family? And all normal clothing? Color me impressed. Fingers crossed all their seemingly positive changes keep going -- the kids look genuinely happy in those photos, too. Relaxing the rules has got to make life easier on everybody, I'd think.

Good, I wasn't the only one! That's just looking for a way to lose the poor little things... at least they didn't belong to the Schupes.

I got bored with Erika due to all her repeat posts and such. Now I see mundane camping trips, and what outwardly seems like a normal family...

But then on her FB she talks about Ken Ham's Ark, and wants to see it.

So. Clearly still a fundie. :/

To be fair, I'd want to get a firsthand glimpse of the Ark Encounter if I had the (free) chance... just probably not for the same reasons as her or other fundies ;)

Oh, undoubtedly. It would be more like The Ark Encounter: A Tour if Wacky Biblical Literalism by Ken Ham in my mind. lol

Regarding the guinea pigs in a kiddie pool:  In grade school, one of my teachers kept the class pets, a box turtle and a tortoise, in a pool in the classroom.  It was actually a pretty good set up.  Turtles and and tortoises need that horizontal space, and a traditional glass aquarium or wire enclosure would be pretty darn expensive at that size.  It was watertight and easy to clean too.  That being said, the tortoise, who was quite large, would occasionally escape and go exploring - luckily he was easy to catch :my_biggrin:.

They go camping with their church every year though. It isn't a sign of anything, I don't think. The only thing I spy that looks relatively new is Karen and Melanie's attire.

Erika has posted an article about how men aren't being raised as men...because their grip is looser than it used to be. It talks about how there's less of a focus on "traditional" masculine activities like changing oil and playing football, and how Call of Duty is a common experience among young men now.

Well, yes, as a country, we're not in very good shape or very good health. But I don't think men today are less masculine because their grip is looser. Frankly, I think it's a bit shallow to say someone isn't as good because they're not as strong.

Well, it's safe to say that Erika isn't a deep thinker.  Really, how can she quantify levels of masculinity or femininity for that matter in the limited number of people she encounters?  It is encouraging, however, to see her family getting a bit less restricted in some ways.  There's hope for Karen and Melanie!!

Wait, football? I thought Erika was against sports because it took away from family time or whatever. And it's funny she would think other people aren't raising their boys to be masculine enough. Her boys seem quite soft and mama's boy-ish (not snarking on the kids; it's all her doing, well, hers and Bob's [and I'm sorry for the phrasing, it sounds negative but I don't know how else to explain my point as well. I personally do not think boys need to be tough or macho]).  Didn't she say she bathes them until they're like 12 or some crazy thing like that that made my jaw drop when I read it? I don't think I actually read whatever it was that she said about it, just people here discussing it. In any case, all children, male and female, should be allowed some age-appropriate independence, which she VERY CLEARLY denies them. It's not a masculinity issue to ME, but for her I don't see how she can justify being so goddamn overbearing to her sons especially, since they're supposed to be developing leadership skills and beating their chests and all that.

I think football (or just tossing around a ball) is okay if it's just sons and father. And yeah, I don't see that Erika and Bob are raising their boys to be "traditionally" masculine.

She justifies it because...Erika. :pb_lol:

Seriously?? Sports are still huge with boys. And some boys aren't as big and strong as others. That doesn't make them any less masculine. Plus, there is actually a thing these days where guys are taking shit tons of steroids and working out insane lengths of time to achieve the "perfect masculine body". Because, in spite of what this article says, a muscle-bound body is seen as the pinnacle of masculinity.

Oh, and according to one commenter, Portland Oregon is a "hub of sissy men". I smell bullshit....

It couldn't possibly be that fewer people are growing up on farms and doing agricultural labor, which takes loads of strength. Nope, it's gotta be the ebil feminism, that's the only  answer.

Isn't her husband fat? Maybe she's being passive agressive saying that fats are not manly.

And no Erika, you're not raising manly boys. You're rising indoor boys, probably scary boys, you're not allowing real sport, real personality nor real mental strengh. You are not raising leaders.. not at all.

@MamaJunebug For some reason they're not on the timeline on her page anymore- you kinda have to dig. Click on the photos link on the lefthand sidebar. The second album titled "All Church Family Camp 2016" contains the photos.

I love baseball but I'm dreading the new season because the White Sox ownership is THE FUCKING WORST. I watched Dominican League Baseball (Lidom!) over the winter and fell in love with their joy, spirit, and exuberance. The broadcasts were in Spanish and my Spanish is pretty weak but I loved catching phrases and repeating them. Bombe! I'm sad about MLB and Commissioner Idiota's busywork rules. But I love baseball, always and forever.
I guess I don't have a point. Just bitching. Te amo mucho, Lidom!

      Happy International Women's Day!

Humanity may have some work to do, to improve gender equality, but I was glad to hear that France has taken an important step to protect healthcare for women (and people of other genders who can get pregnant).

Feeling ragey this morning. I have a doctor's appointment this afternoon in the hope of getting help for an ongoing injury. I went to a (different!!) doctor late last year who completely blew me off. He wouldn't do diagnostic testin, he refused to send me to a specialist, and he just told me to "take it easy" and "take ibuprofen." I'm hopeful for today's appointment but I'm also feeling a SEVERE amount of rage at that doctor from last year!

Well, the rash is back with a vengeance. It never completely cleared up. I saw the derm yesterday and they did another swab and yup, raging infection again, still? It is definitely strep skin infection. I am getting so damn tired and run down from this. Who the f would immagine being hospitalized freaking TWICE for a rash?

My niece is going to be a seat filler at this year's Academy Awards.  Seat fillers are asked to wear tuxedos regardless of sex/gender.  If you see a pretty young woman with very curly hair, it could be my niece.
