Jazz Hands, Sparkle Crotch: Erika Schupe Pt. 9

Goodness, if there's no medical necessity, I really don't see the point in not adding salt to my food. Why would I eat bland food when there's no need? Like other people mentioned, the problem (for healthy people) is all the sodium in processed foods that is masked by all the sugar. But adding salt to taste to your home-cooked food is perfectly fine.

sorry for pulling us back to june 30th, but i've been catching up over the past few days and ever since i read this quote from erika about the girls wearing skirts i can't get it off my mind (i know this was discussed at some point but it was in the last thread so i can't quote that post):

Quote

She is getting older and, we are working on transferring authority over what, specifically, she wears while still keeping a minimum level of modesty to her. We have done our best to instill the morals, soon it will be between her and God to hash out the personal desire issue. We transition from parent to consultant as she transitions to adult hood.

if this is true, and not just careless use of the word authority....this is EVERYTHING. they're transferring authority to KAREN?! not retaining all of it and then transferring it to her husband?? even recognizing that she can become an adult without a husband? this seems like a huge violation of fundie 101:  parents keeping the authority (All of The Authorityyy) until transferring it to the husband.

i'm contrasting this to the treatment of poor sarah maxwell, addie morton, jana duggar, who seem doomed to neverland no matter how old they get. i'm also thinking of the big deal families like the smiths/mortons make about the transfer of authority to the husband (spiritually at engagement, physically at marriage), or the way that alyssa bates didn't dare to slip on that pair of pants until her parents transferred her authority to john.

of course, i don't know how deeply erika drank of that particular flavor of kool-aid, but the parental authority til marriage seemed to me to be fairly universal to the families discussed here, so her comment seems groundbreaking to me. maybe there's hope that karen can leave home and be relatively free to make her own choices!

I have no insight into the workings of Erika Shupe's brain but I am so glad that the older girls are getting a chance to spread their wings and fly a little bit. This is only a good thing.

Re: salt

Even salting a boiled egg makes me swell up like a water balloon. I have no medical issues (that I'm aware of, anyway) but salt just does that to me. A friend of mine can eat a dozen tacos and not gain an ounce. Jealous of that. Everyone responds to food and seasonings differently.

I'm not overweight but am trying to loose those last few pounds (those annoying ones that never seem to budge) and the only thing that helps make the scale move is tons of water, no salt, and as few carbs as possible.

Not a salt fan here...I don't think I even own a salt shaker. I tend to use a lot of spices in my food, but rarely use salt. I'd have to say the only time I use salt is in a baked potato, it must be smothered in butter (REAL butter), salt, sour cream, cheese, chives and hopefully bacon!

I think there's probably a LOT going on with Karen and Melanie that Erika doesn't share. I think there's a good chance they really put their collective foot down and refused to go along with all of Erika's craziness anymore. I doubt she actually wanted to transfer authority to them, and I never got the impression that she was planning to do things that way, so I think she was left with no other choice, if she wanted to retain any control over them at all.

Karen and Melanie are pretty much the only older fundie kids I actually like, and now I like them even more.

Completely off topic, but...

"Note:  I use Microsoft Excel for scheduling (which all Microsoft Office users have by the way) so I'll be talking about Excel a bit here as I go along.  But I used to make my schedules in Word using "Tables", which is very nice, too.  My husband taught me how to do the few basic functions I need in Excel which I now prefer.  *smile*  It's very easy to use, actually".

I swear I sometimes think she is pranking the internet and she is not a real person but a made-up character.

I think you're probably right. That house is too crowded and life is too scheduled to grow up happily there, plus those girls have worked far too much and have almost starved. Sure they keep resentment in their hearts and this can help them to decide to change. They're not as isolated as Maxwells (who, on the other side, are living confortable, which makes rebellion more difficult). The lack of money is forcing Erika to allow her daugthers to work outside, and as they don't live in a extremelly fundie environtment, it's easy for them to meet mainstream people.

Wasn't Erika friend to Jeubs? It would be funny that Karen and Melanie also break with fundamentalism (even if they remain conservative, they can do a lot of good changes in their lives).

I still think Erika wants to get in on this. I was re-reading her scheduling post (the one she has flagged on facebook right now) and I particularly enjoyed how she said she waits for God to tell her what to do. Imagine, if instead of an item bringing you joy (or however it's worded), you sat there with a pair of shoes in your lap, waiting for God to tell you to ditch them? *chuckle*

Because we all know that God doesn't have anything better to do besides organizing the storage of all Erika's worn out shoes. *smirk*

Personally I find that organizing my wardrobe with the Holy Spirit leaves the old sneakers with a fresher scent.

Sadly, as someone who works in IT, I find her reported computer skills believable.  Sad, but believable.

There is a subset of the population that is convinced they can not learn technology.  They are so convinced, that they subconsciously throw up roadblocks to learning the simplest task.  It is a struggle to teach them anything.   I would not be at all surprised if she was this type of person.

I'm currently training for a marathon in heat and humidity and I CRAVE salt. Nothing tastes as good as salty GF pretzels after a run in the heat.

That's all I have to add :P

Long time distance runner here, definitely no fear of too much salt when after a run your whole body is gritty, and your bras dry with a white line from the salt! Time for more chips! Potatoes are high in potassium, you know. Pastor chips are practically medicinal when training for a marathon. (I'm sure Mt Dew is too, I just haven't quite made the link yet. ) what marathon are you doing?

You should maybe consider getting yourself a leopard gecko or two to put those just plain rocks to actual use. We have a 55 gallon tank currently housing two geckos and about thirty rocks. I give them a good scrub with a vegetable brush dedicated to scrubbing plain old rocks and then situate them in the warm end of the tank for endless hours of gecko patrol excitement.

Do you have a photo? ...I like to encourage unusual pet photos when we hear of them.  All-encompassing animal lover myself.

Just posting to say that I made Sims of Karen and Melanie! They took Happy and ran off to Iceland as teenagers (I have the Aurora Skies Sims 3 pack that is modeled on Nordic architecture, so).

They camped in a cramped tent for two days, even in pouring rain! But I made them teach Happy how to hunt for collectibles. From selling those and writing, they then were able to buy a small cabin. It originally came with a main room (living/dining/kitchen), a sitting room, and then one bedroom and bath.

But, I changed the sitting room into a second bedroom! I am sure they would appreciate their own rooms, and there's still a couch and chairs for them in the front room.

It looks like Erika's mom took out the oldest two and Erika for a pedicure in celebration of Karen and Melanie's birthdays. Its very clear that Erika's parents are very generous, and I think its great that they're so willing to take them out on special trips and such. I noticed that the only one wearing pants is Erika's mom, but Karen has a cute sleeveless dress on.

Yeah, Karen is very pretty. Melanie too. And wow, that is quite the plunging neckline on Melanie's top. Erika and her mom look so alike.

Erika has posted nothing for four days. Maybe they're on the church camp again?? But then, this always happens with Erika. She goes on a real posting spree, takes a break of a few days, then makes up for it by posting a load more stuff. There'll be a church camp album at some point, but don't hold your breath. Last year's album didn't appear till January of this year.

It's so irritating when fundies are out living their lives and not posting things for us.

I hope she posts lots of pictures when she returns for us to snark on.

Wow, Karen is not only wearing jeans, but also shorts!

I just like these kids (Karen and Melanie) so much! I mean, I don't know them, and it's perfectly possible I wouldn't like them if I did, but they just seem to be not only nice and cooperative, but also independent and assertive (which is no small feat for anyone raised the way they were...and really, that's a difficult balance for any teenager to strike). They look so lovely and sweet in the family pictures, but then we also know they do stand up for themselves and make their own way in life. They are exceptionally resilient.

Wow, she laid carpet outside the tent. Have not seen that one before.

We do! Okay, it is a much smaller piece of carpet, but it keeps the pebbles and dirt from being tracked into the tent. With that many littles, it would make tenting far more comfortable.

I love baseball but I'm dreading the new season because the White Sox ownership is THE FUCKING WORST. I watched Dominican League Baseball (Lidom!) over the winter and fell in love with their joy, spirit, and exuberance. The broadcasts were in Spanish and my Spanish is pretty weak but I loved catching phrases and repeating them. Bombe! I'm sad about MLB and Commissioner Idiota's busywork rules. But I love baseball, always and forever.
I guess I don't have a point. Just bitching. Te amo mucho, Lidom!

      Happy International Women's Day!

Humanity may have some work to do, to improve gender equality, but I was glad to hear that France has taken an important step to protect healthcare for women (and people of other genders who can get pregnant).

Feeling ragey this morning. I have a doctor's appointment this afternoon in the hope of getting help for an ongoing injury. I went to a (different!!) doctor late last year who completely blew me off. He wouldn't do diagnostic testin, he refused to send me to a specialist, and he just told me to "take it easy" and "take ibuprofen." I'm hopeful for today's appointment but I'm also feeling a SEVERE amount of rage at that doctor from last year!

Well, the rash is back with a vengeance. It never completely cleared up. I saw the derm yesterday and they did another swab and yup, raging infection again, still? It is definitely strep skin infection. I am getting so damn tired and run down from this. Who the f would immagine being hospitalized freaking TWICE for a rash?

My niece is going to be a seat filler at this year's Academy Awards.  Seat fillers are asked to wear tuxedos regardless of sex/gender.  If you see a pretty young woman with very curly hair, it could be my niece.
