Bates Family Part 16 - Babystep Bates

According to most developmental specialists, pediatricians, and dentists, they should be gotten off the plug before a year old.  Kids that are walking around and engaged in activities don't need a plug in their mouths.  Yes, it's a pet peeve of mine.  My daughter is actually worse than I am and except for bedtime plugs were gone by four months and at night before six months.

About what age do toddlers wean from pacifiers? Miss GG never took to one, so I'm clueless.

To me it depends on when the parents decide enough is enough with the pacifier. At my daycare we stop giving to them around one and a half, but we have two year olds who will come in with them and will get them at night. There's even been a few three year olds who get pacifiers, but that's more rare to see.

Depends on the kid.

My daughter had one until age 3

Her daughter has one @ 2. My son was a thumb sucker...until age 7.

That's exactly right. Some love them, some don't . I would guess it is more typical for kids to like them, I had not known one, especially a baby, who didn't, until DD came around. She didn't suck her thumb either. Maybe something to do with breastfeeding, probably not though. Little humans are not monolithic.

Your experience with DD sounds a lot like Miss GG and me.

Another query. What age should kids be done with the stroller?

Personally I don't think there's a specific age where kids should get rid of pacifiers, bottles, strollers, whatever. I'm sure people probably think I should wean my kid from the boob but I don't give a fuck what they think. He never took a bottle or pacifier so maybe that will make some people feel better about my 1 year old breastfeeding all the time.

With my child he sucked on his own tongue and didn't want a pacifier. I figured hey if he wanted to be self sufficient and use his tongue who was I to argue.

Holy cow. Katie is the SPIT of Erin. Never noticed that before.

Compare this picture with a picture of Erin, Michael and Alyssa at the same age. It's shocking how much this family has changed the outfits.

These 3 girls should be going to a high school (or real college), not being stucked at home being part of a reality show. At least Kelly stopped having kids, so these girls are not forced to wake up at night to feed anybody.

Yes Katie looks like Erin. Katie is shy, she's not often in pictures. According to the old blog, she was always reading (regular mistery books, not only the Bible). I wonder if she's still reading, maybe if she's quiet and a good student, she can go to a real college.

That's what they did to me, and ended up sucking on my thumb until age 5

I was still sucking on a pacifier until I got to school. My mom finally said "We aren't buying anymore pacifiers. Once you lose this one you're done." and I kept it around until I lost it one day in Kindergarten. Or maybe my mom took it. Who knows?

But my brother is 2 and a half years younger than me and he wasn't sucking on his pacifier anymore when I still had mine.

Also, I didn't take my pacifier to school. I didn't go to day care or pre-k, so kindergarten was my first time at school. I would keep it in the car and pop it back in when my mom picked me up.

I would rather my child suck on a pacifier than his thumb or fingers. Because you can't take away a child's hand. What a struggle that must be! I had a friend who sucked her fingers until age 12. Another sucked her thumb into adulthood.

I never sucked my thumb or a pacifier (in Britain we call them dummies). My brother used to suck his finger. I don't know if I'd give my potential kid a dummy. I'll cross that bridge when I come to it (ie I have a kid haha.)

I think it will be Clown or PCC for her too if she decides to go. The Bateses are just as fundie as they were before and I can't see them voluntarily sending off one of their little arrows to a heathen college with blasphemous accreditation. I know Michael attended (or did classes online) with a local community college, but she seems like she's more entrenched than the younger girls. They seem more like flight risks to me.

Ehh, I think Clown or PCC is better than nothing, or getting married at 18 just for a bit of independence and becoming pregnant soon after.

Furthering education should never be frowned upon.

My mom sucked her thumb until she passed away two years ago at the age of 57. My siblings and I constantly teased her about her flat discolored thumb. My little sister still sucks hers at age 22. It's pretty insane but I like to think of it as our family's weird quirks.

My mom also got strange cravings for raw cornstarch when she was pregnant. Gotta love the image of a heavily pregnant woman with a powder covered mouth eating out of a box of cornstarch with a spoon. I still have a fondness for it myself, which I'm sure is super unhealthy.

I craved toothpaste when I was pregnant. It took everything I had not to just squeeze it into my mouth like squeeze cheese. At least corn starch is a food.

Plus at a secular college they might see someone with green hair! That would be awkward. Kaite certainly wouldn't want to go to a place like that.

My mom ate Aim toothpaste specifically the last two months of her pregnancy with me. She had gestational diabetes and was on hospital bedrest, so it was the only sweet thing she could sneak. I blame my quirkiness on Aim.

This is her blog section now:

Katie is full of spunk and laughter. She loves pranks and always makes us smile. She frequently volunteers to help out with the younger children, with chores, and with any other needs. She is the one behind the scenes doing all of the work, but taking none of the credit. One of her favorite pastimes is reading history books and quizzing others.

Her favourite film is listed as Perry Mason, which appears to be a mystery series.

I think that broken trampoline is in the background to the left of this trampoline.

So I'm guessing they also don't believe in homeowner's insurance? Where I live at least they won't issue a policy if you have a trampoline without a net.

I grew up watching Perry Mason with my grandma. It came on our local PBS.  It is a show from the 50's about a defense attorney. The show usually ended with an overly dramatic confession in the courtroom. :laughing-jumpingpurple:

I know the Tummy Tea debacle was in the previous Bates Family thread, but I saw this on Tumblr today

It's hard to read the bottom, but it says

Quote

About a week ago, I got an email from this company and I was asked if I would like to try + promote their weight loss tea. I politely declined by not replying to their emails after being told they don’t offer compensation for promotional work. I don’t care for these “miracle” weight loss teas so I wasn’t interested in promoting something I don’t believe in.
This morning I receive this email from them after not accepting to promote their product. I am honestly so taken back that a company would say something as blatantly awful as this. I call this harassment. @flattummytea, I want to make sure you’re aware that your PR is sending these disgusting emails trying to shame and harass me about my size? Your company is sending out such a terrible message to women and young girls by doing this.
This honestly really disturbed me and I was hesitant to speak up about this at first but this is 100% not ok. I know many of you are asked to do promotional work so please make sure you’re only doing business or collaborating with companies who respect you and value your platform and time.

UPDATE: They deleted each and every comment posted on their Instagram page about this incident and did not apologize whatsoever FUCK THIS COMPANY

This is a condition called Pica. If I remember correctly, it's a vitamin deficiency that causes these intense cravings in pregnancy of items that aren't really 'food.' It can occur outside of pregnancy as well. I remember reading years ago about a woman who craved, and indulged in, red clay dirt. There were also stories of women who ate the cornstarch you mentioned and baking powder.

Okay, let me get this straight: This company wants people to promote them on social media FOR NOTHING? Why the fuck would anyone want to advertize a company they have no ties to without compensation? Am I missing something here?

(I'm deliberately ignoring the disgusting weight-shaming going on here. I don't even have words for that except FUCK THEM.)
