According to her ask.fm she thinks the world would be taken over by animals if everyone became a vegetarian. She clearly doesn't understand that how we get so much meat isn't natural and wouldn't keep happening if factory farming stopped. I don't think she ever thinks deeply about anything.

I laughed so hard at this ask post

A single adult can take a full course load and still work a full time job.  One of my kids did that and still managed to make time for their significant other, WoW (their designated 'disengage from real life' mode), and still see friends and relatives.  Granted, the visiting and the WoW got cut back to almost nothing at times, but it can be done.

Granted, my kid didn't spend a lot of time getting new tattoos, running blogs, and flying out of the country to visit relatives and orphanages.  But that kid is now working a nice job, has a new car, and is looking to buy a house.

I've got another kid about to graduate with an Associates degree and planning on moving on to a Bachelors.  The third was slow to launch, but taking classes one or two at a time (doesn't want to take out college loans).  I've got some good kids.

When I was working on my Master's degree there was one semester when I was taking 5 graduate level classes, working one full time job and one part time job. It was difficult, but I managed and made it through my entire graduate program with out taking out more loans. However, my parents did raise me to have a strong work ethic so I at least had that going in my favor.

I was raised with a strong work ethic too, and I don't think I could do that successfully. I know my limits. Don't downplay your accomplishment.

@Kate11, that's pretty impressive.  But yes - you do what you have to do and make some sacrifices.  I'm working on my MA in History 1 class at a time (can't manage any more with kid, work, and desire to get As) and am going on a READING BINGE as soon as I submit the paper...

Yep, that's exactly why thousands of years ago when the world population was much smaller nobody went hungry! There were just so many animals in need of hunters, they couldn't even keep up! On a more serious note, does anyone know if this idea is just something she came up with on her own or is it a common fundie teaching?

Unfortunately, plenty of people (religious or not) don't believe that factory farming, excessive consumption of animal products, etc. have any negative impacts on the environment. To add to the irony, from the same batch of questions on ask.fm, she answers another one asking her opinion of recycling, to which she says "it's a smart and environmental way to live."

I'm sure my view of Portland is stereotyped and off-base, and NOT everyone there is a liberal hippy-type, who believes in gay marriage and so on.....  BUT it doesn't seem to be a Racquel-esque place to live to me.  If she's working in downtown Portland, she'll have to come into contact with gay and trans people, surely?  And Muslim and Jewish people etc etc?  Mind you, how would she cope with being in a study group with an LGBT or Muslim student (hell, even a Black student?).

It is 9;56 as I write this. The wind is blowing, there is a misting rain. The first hint of rain in many, many days.

And if any damn fool set another fire I will find them. The burn ban means you can't pile up leaves, set them on fire and wander off to get a beer.

But, about Raquel,

All of her 11:11 wishes were about him even before she met him and was clearly making them about someone else?

She thinks her subconscious brought him to life?

Damn she gives herself a ton of credit!

So, I'm guessing this one true love won't last long because Raquel is immature and overly attached.

Learn about

Poetry

Raquel.

Because I"m not sure you have ever actually written a poem.

She's never written a poem, but she has penned many a pome.

I think it is just her being ill informed about life. She has this weird fetish about guys killing animals. She has said over and over she would only date a guy who can kill an animal and this isn't the first time she has made stupid statements about people who don't eat meat.

I wonder if Raquel has actually seen an animal killed or if this is all just a Pinterest fantasy for her.

One class might be a struggle for Raquel. From the things she has written, it does not sound like she got any sort of an education yet was told she was super smart. I feel sorry for anyone stuck in a group project with her. We have all had to deal with the Raquels of group projects. Those folks who like to take credit for doing nothing, refuse to do their fair share, refuse to accept any constructive criticism on their work and in general just fuck it up for everyone else.

It's definitely a very liberal city, I'd imagine it'd be very difficult to avoid coming into contact with people who hold different beliefs from her, are LGBTQ+, etc. That said, I'm sure people can quickly isolate themselves by only hanging out with people like them (for instance, only making friends from their church). Even if the city itself is quite diverse, people can create their own echo chambers pretty easily.

I appreciate how Pinterest has made people interested in doing a bit more cooking, DIY projects, etc. But the fantasy aspect is overboard. I know too many people with huge Pinterest boards full of all these picture-perfect recipes to try, when in reality they can't make a grilled cheese sandwich. :my_confused:

Portland is a blue area in a red state, but is also home to many Driscoll-esque "hipster-christians," and was not so very long ago a sundown town. It's still overwhelmingly white and you're far more likely to find people who identify as non-religious than as a religious minority. It's a vein of liberalism that is very insular and not used to having its values challenged. (Remind you of anyone?) I know some amazing artists and musicians and chefs and all manner of creative people here, but Racquel isn't likely to interact with them at the chain coffee shop she's working at. And good luck trying to afford rent in the city, kiddo.

Good lord, I basically just told her to get off my lawn.

She's got a recpie board on Pinterest, but her two largest collections seem to be pictures of people kissing and otherwise being "romantic" and quotes about romance. That tells you a lot of what you need to know about her. Honestly, it creeps me out. Not that I don't enjoy the occasional romance or romantic comedy, but she's one of those people who takes it to the level of emotional porn.

Interesting, thank you!  I guess the Portland-ians I follow are always bragging about how cool their town is, I was imagining it like a smaller San Francisco/Bay Area (which I know has its own issues, but is more diverse, racially, and full of people from different religious communities).  I missed the bottom-line point, which is check for intersectionality :-)
