I think someone mentioned upthread that the Staddons are connected to the Wallers. How so? I'm sort of fascinated by how intermarried all these fundie families seem to be (and how desperate J-Rod is to break into the big ol' Fundie Love Actually interconnectedness pile).

Robert Staddon and The Pecan Thief are BFFs. In most pictures they actually look happier together than they do with their respective wives.

:my_biggrin: Indeed they do. And now they are distant relatives through marriage. David Waller's brother, Derick is married to Jennie Wilkes, who is Matthew Wilkes' sister, and Matthew is married to Amanda Neely, who is Kathryn Neely's sister, and Kathryn is now married to Daniel Staddon, who is Robert Staddon's brother.

I think we need a chart.

Whoops.  That didn't even register with me as being noteworthy.  I grew up in a community where that was completely normal and expected. In a lot of older closed religious/fundie communities, that's just the way it is.

When they grow up the arrows from the Wallers/Wilkes's/Neelys/Staddons can marry the offspring from the Morton/Smith/Sanders - and those a bit more distant like the Campanas & Roberts - clans. It's the only way they'll find unrelated/unconnected spouses with proper, godly upbringing. I can't imagine Mia Morton being able to find a spouse outside her inner circle - not only because of the gajillion family connections, but because there are soooo many in her generation before here, there isn't going to be anyone left for her when it's her turn.

I have come to the conclusion that *some* people don't believe the South "really" lost.

. . . and others are still fighting it.

Appomattox was just a temporary setback, dontcha know.

I was trying to figure out some of the VF families (damn list of pregnant fundies) and came to the same conclusion.

A big-ass - lines and broken lines and circles and squares - chart so I can make sense of all this.

Maybe this will work. @Palimpsest tried to create a Venn Diagram but gave up, IIRC.

The extent of intermarriage is pretty astounding though.

I bet they won't directly marry cousins. Sure there will be plenty of double first cousins and relations through multiple marriages, but no actual blood relatives marrying. They will conveniently all be told by God that their perfect match is the only fundie in their group that isn't blood related.

I was surprised when I found out how many states still banned first cousin marriages see here.

It is still a criminal offence in some.  I wonder if it is still prosecuted.

He, of course, recorded one of his anti-gay sermons and used the screw & nut to show what it's 'supposed' to be like, then said the sodomites do it like this...and he started jamming two screws together. It was quite...well, quite Anderson of him. Grunting and all.

I'm at work but at home I saved a Youtube video compilation someone created of a bunch of his tantrums together and that's where I last saw it. If I remember, I'll post it tonight in one of his threads.

I'm sure he meant something normal, but I just can't get this picture of a guy on his fingertips and toes like they used to sneak around in the old Bugs Bunny cartoons, rotating around his wife. (With the Looney Tunes theme song going in the background)

I know, Rule 34, but man, that guy has to be venturing into some pretty weird parts of Youporn

Maybe not in this generation, since they pretty much know who's who and that first cousin marriages are squicky, but there may be an astronomical number of second cousins (next generation) needing spouses.  Without an up-to-date, distributed chart, and viable non-family marriage options, a good number of them could end up marrying each other.  This would be much less likely to produce bad mutations than first cousin marriage, but I could see the lines getting blurred after awhile regarding how closely related a couple actually is.

Maybe some of those overseas Gothard missions could provide marriage stock?  The marriages would probably end up more arranged than usual, but I doubt this would be much of a problem.

Some smart fundie should start an international matchmaking business that includes certifications for sinlessness (at least the deadly ones), piety, and whatever else the customers might consider important.

I think that since these families aren't forcing marriages like the Kingston clan, there won't be a lot of incest. There's always the Internet. So I'm sure they can find a proper fundie or even someone like Derick Dillard or Whitney that are happy to join the fundie crazy.

I wonder if there's much money to be had from such a service...

This is making my head hurt! :confused2: Count me in as someone who would love to peruse a family tree for...this. I'm a genealogy nut and I find this stuff fascinating. I'm trying to work out in my head exactly how each person is related to each other person and I'm afraid I'll need to stop or else I'll get a migraine.

Notice that I'm being very, very, quiet here.  I'm desperately hoping that someone else will volunteer to do the genealogical family tree - or wreath!  My beady little eyes fixed on @CatNap immediately.

My Venn diagram was more about religious beliefs - trying to sort out those pesky doctrinal differences that render courtship and marriage unlikely.  Those questionnaires comprising 85+ questions are mostly to weed out doctrinal differences, after all.

It is very possible that the families will get less picky about doctrine over time if they start worrying about inbreeding.  However, these things are Very Important and I tend to think it is an indicator of Duggar desperation that Jim Bob is now accepting Calvinists into the family.  I think the Duggar name is mud among Gothardites these days.  We will see.

I'm in favor of fundie family trees as long as vital statistics come from information fundies themselves post publically. Hell, I would do it myself, but I'm not familiar with most of them.

So is the 85 question inquisition a standard doc for these circles, or is it something each dad makes up?  I've seen other fundie dads do similar things.  One thing I did find interesting is in their courtship story, they did mention going off alone to chat (of course within range of the rest of the family), but at least they did get some private conversations (hopefully).  Interesting how all they ask about is spiritual things and goals before they even get to the personality/compatibility bit.  I wonder if these men have a specific sort of personality in mind when they start looking for a wife?

Also, I wonder how awkward it is for Daniel & Kathryn on their wedding night since none of their courtship/engagement pictures shows them as much as holding hands - they're all posed awkwardly standing next to each other with hands grasping something or in their pockets.  Such a difference compared to say, the Bates and Duggar daughters who could barely contain how excited they were to be with their future mates (and have said so since).  The Staddon men especially seem to be choosing wives based on their "character" and "godliness" and then having to wait while the women decide if they want to be pursued.

We were scratching our heads because the area is technically in the "North" and the Rebels were pretty soundly defeated at Gettysburg and were the losers in the battle.

Confused Yankee here with an honest question...Is calling them the Rebels still a thing? I mean, I know that, historically, Johnny Reb was a thing, but I've always just referred to them as "the Confederates" and that's what I hear from others--even those who fly the Confederate flag. It honestly took me a second to realize that you meant the rebels from the American Civil War and not the rebels from the American Revolution. (Yes @Snarkle, I know you referred to it as the Confederate flag as well.)

<snip for space>

It varies according to each Fundie Father.  Some of them take it very seriously and 85 questions is actually conservative.  The heat must have turned my brain because I can't find the examples I want - I was sure the Seppis had a really long questionnaire.  On second thought, perhaps I have the wrong family because although the Seppis are big into weddings they like fake kidnapping brides too.

I did find this - perhaps @uber frau can clarify where she found it.  I don't think it is a parody.

According to Debi Pearl, the girls are supposed to sit down and think about all their faults and decide their personality type with Daddy while waiting for Prince Charming.  Then he decides what personality they need in a husband - you hear some Pearl jargon frequently when Fundie maidens talk about courtship.  The men are also supposed to go through a similar process with Daddy before they are allowed to ask to their chosen one's Dad for permission to court.

Per Pearl, men are Prophets, Priests and Kings.  Women are Servants, Go to Gals, and Dreamers.  http://nogreaterjoy.org/blogs/preparingtobeahelpmeet/about/personality-types/

One of the more (in)famous list of courtship questions was that of James and Stacy McDonald

Quote

One thing I’d like to point out before you read these questions is that we haven’t used this list in its entirety for all of the young men who have called on our daughters. It is a compilation of all the things we thought would be helpful to our daughters in making a decision of whether or not to move forward in a courtship. Things she should know and evaluate, things they could discuss and work out together. Each of our married daughters also answered these questions for their suitors during the courtship. It gave them wonderful discussion points.

Thank you!  Did I mention my brain had turned to mush.  The McDonald's questionnaire is a classic!  Do you have any personal habits that may annoy others?

I'm still convinced the Seppis had one too.  Darned if I can find it today.  For those who have not yet encountered the Seppis here is the link:  http://melodys-notes.blogspot.com/

They are some of the nuttiest nuts we have ever snarked on.

How old are the other Neely girls? Are there more of them that are about to be married off?

Amanda (the eldest) is already married, and then next in line was Kathryn (who is 21) . I think the next one (Jessica) is 19, and the rest are obviously younger than that.
