In case anyone gives a shit about Joshley's favorite Bible verse...

I really think they're trying to integrate Josh back into the public eye in small ways. To say, "Look, no one's mad at him for being around! Everyone wants to see him!" to try and get him back on the show.

I am guessing the reason it is his favorite verse is that it is towards the beginning of the book that bears his name. ;). He probably hasn't gotten much farther in it. ;)

As to reintegrating him into the family and rehabilitating him with the public, that is surely what they are doing and I can't exactly fault them (except that for them the whole thing is connected to TLC money).  If my son had been disgraced publicly and I believed he had turned over a new leaf, I might try to let everyone know that I had forgiven him and was trying to go back to normal. (I wouldn't want him on my reality show though.)

I think Josh needs a new favorite Bible verse. Thou shalt not commit adultery comes to mind.

Maybe he accidentally got the Adulterous Edition, where they accidentally left out the "not".

The one thing that always bothered me is why Josh took the job in D.C. to begin with. Fame and money are obvious answers, but I wondered if there were other "perks" he was considering for himself. In the episode where they left town they were obviously distraught over moving away from family, especially Anna having no help with the kids anymore. The timing of it seemed terrible for her so I figured Josh had some ulterior motives.

My opinion:

Josh got the job through Jim Bob, since FRC was part of the Duggar's anti-abortion coalition.  He collected a six-digit salary, plus whatever TLC was paying, and Jana was around helping at least part of the time.  He probably figured he could use the "leadership" experience as a stepping stone to future political office.  He didn't concern himself with Anna's opinion - assuming she had one - since he pretty much views her as an extension of himself.  And he was already cheating on her.

Yes.  The ultimate goal of most like-thinking fundies is political power so they can turn back the hands of time. Back to when women stayed in the kitchen, gays in the closet, Protestant white men ruled the roost and the country and the black man knew his place. (the GALL of one of them running for and actually becoming President!)

Given his history, Jim Bob may have been a little nervous about Josh going to DC, but ultimately he couldn't let that kind of opportunity pass.  That's the best thing about Josh being outed for what he is.  Like so many other right wing nuts, he can spew all kinds of holier than thou and hate talk but he doesn't really think the rules apply to him. I love when they get caught.

Do we know anything about Josh's computers and Anna? Like, was she allowed to use his computer at all? If she wasn't I could see Josh getting lazy and not deleting search histories, closing tabs, etc.

I'm glad the Ashley Madison hack happened because if the break had been internal-- i.e., Anna logs on computer for something and accidentally stumbles upon Josh's porn-- I bet we never would have heard of it and Duggars would be still smooth sailing, at least as smooth sailing as they were after the molestation scandal.

I'm convinced Anna knew about the porn. His porn habit wasn't just  a recent thing, he was doing it all the way back when they were in the little house. There's no way she didn't get up to feed a baby in the night and found Joshie on the computer... I think the first few times he promised he'd stop, blah blah blah, and after the umpteenth time she just pretended not to notice when he wasn't in bed in the middle of the night. There's no way she wasn't aware of it, not in that tiny house.

If Anna did know about the porn she may not have realized what it was. She grew up so sheltered that I'm sure stuff like that was not talked about in her home.

My first thought reading this how do you not know what porn is. After all it is not some high brow intellectually challenge concept. Even if there's something wrong in the marriage the culture they are in is constantly selling Godly marriage with no birth control as the ideal.

It is possible that she knew, but I think it is equally possible that she didn't.

We don't know if he watched a lot of porn at home.  He may have done most of it at work, where he could shut the office door to "do accounts" or "look for cars to buy" or whatever excuse worked.

If he was at the computer late at night, the chances are good that if the screen was turned away, and Anna was half asleep, she might neither notice anything odd or suspect porn, unless she had reason to "watch" for it.  He could have told her that he was reading Bible commentary online or searching the real estate auction listings or whatever sounded plausible.

The thing is, when you are not looking for something, you just don't see it.  When you trust someone, it may not cross your mind that they are doing something "bad."

Maybe she did find out.  Maybe he was careless or maybe she had been warned to watch him.  But I think it is possible that she didn't know.

Who knows.

(snipped quote of fiction)

I get your point, but since you are talking about possibly my favorite figure in the Bible, I MUST correct you:

Mary Magdalene was NOT a whore.  Nowhere in scripture does it imply this.

The confusion arose due to a Pope in the 400's conflating the figures of Mary Magdalene and the repentant whore. This stuck around in Tradition,  However,  it has been admitted by Biblical scholars AND officially by the Catholic Church itself (Rare!!!) that this was completely and unequivocally a human error on behalf of that pontiff.  They were, very clearly, two different figures.

IN FACT, the fact that she is called Mary of Magdalene (a distinction rarely given to women at the time) indicates that she was likely both independent and in good standing in the community.  It is more likely she was a wealthy widow, heiress, or business woman and, given what we know of the financial standing of the other apostles, likely that she was Jesus' financial backer mainly or in part.

To give a further example: Peter is referred to as Simon, called Peter.  Not Simon of Nazareth or Simon of Judea.  Why?  Because he was a nobody.

Mary gets the "surname" of Magdalene because she IS someone.  People presumably would have known who THE Mary (Miriam) of Magdalene was.  There were many Mary's in Magdalene (it was a common name), but SHE is the one who MATTERED because SHE had status.

Although tone is often lost in translation, my post was meant as a silly jab at Josh's most- ironic choice of Bible-verse, and it is complete and utter sarcasm of the highest degree.  :my_confused:... :my_biggrin:!

I'm aware :)  I just like to reinforce the Magdalene != whore.  No one ever calls any of the other Biblical women whores!!!!

I see. Interesting choice of campaign! I get it.

If I understand it, as far as history is concerned, Mary became associated with the prostitute who bathed and anointed Jesus’ feet, right? I suppose perhaps this is one reason why she might be confused as such. And if I recall, she donated or supported his discipleship financially. Who's the whore now, Jesus?!*

(*Again, bold sarcasm here! Forgive me for any offense. Blame the gorilla.)

If he was "addicted" to porn in the usual meaning of the word, I'd agree it would be hard to hide it from her.  But if they used that word incorrectly, deliberately or otherwise, and really meant he "likes to watch" porn, then he probably only used his phone (yeah, even that small screen would work for a very curious fundie -  before Playboy boys used photos of topless natives in National Geographic as porn) and stayed discreet about it.

An ad in a free porn video probably lead him to Ashley Madison.   Wanna cheat on your boring old spouse with a like-minded individual with total anonymity and no strings attached?  Just put your credit card number right here....and dumb ass was on his way.

So I think its possible Josh only watched porn on his phone when he was alone and the Duggars, always looking for a worldly scapegoat and wanting to place blame anywhere but on Josh himself, decided to go with the "porn made me do it" excuse.  When in reality he was bored or lonely or looking to capture some sexual freedom that he resented not being allowed before he was pushed into marriage.

Or maybe he didn't give a damn what Anna knew about his alleged addiction to porn.  It's hard to say.

I guess I pictured it as more a secret than a blatant, don't care attitude. But he could have not cared at all cause Anna would just have to deal. And she obviously did since she's still with him... >:(

I initially pictured Josh and Anna's marriage as him going through the motions of being a good husband and then releasing his frustrations on the side, but this thread is making me reconsider and think perhaps Josh ruled his roost the way he wanted, and poor Anna was stuck in evil DC with him. And if he just did what he wanted, then Anna has been living in a fantasy land her whole marriage and why would she leave? Why would her fantasy end now?

Sooooo  Take a look at my profile pic, its a signed copy of the Duggar's tome made out to FJ - and Joshly signed it with the same bible verse... in 2011!

It may be his favorite verse, but he certainly doesnt put much stock in it!

It bugs the crap out of me when they refer to him as Joshua post-scandal.  It's as if they're hoping we'll forget that Joshua = Josh (= smug asshole).

The trouble with the Duggars, ha ha, is that they are so smug and self righteous and this has given birth ha ha to such a mess. The rest of us regular type sinners, well, it is less annoying when we mess up. But most of us are not as bad as them. (A self righteous statement, ha ha)

It's always funny to look at the number of evangelical preachers who turned out to be charlatans, or worse, predators of some sort. I've been reading a book about Pentecostal preacher Tony Leyha and he's just an utterly disgusting man. But the book is full of dutiful parishioners throwing their money at him and offering up their sons for mentoring. Who knows how many of these types are out there and we just don't know it yet.
