Once again US Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Douche Cannon) has stuck his foot in his mouth up past his knees.

Quote

Texas Rep. Louie Gohmert wants to put gay people on an island but not in space. The latter represents the latest homophobic rhetoric from the far-right Texan, who seems to have an exaggerated reaction to everything he doesn’t like.

Gohmert rebuked LGBT rights during a speech on the House floor Thursday, stating that NASA would never send gay couples into space. He even referenced Matt Damon’s starring role in last year’s space exploration flick “The Martian,” the organization Right Wing Watch reported.

His denunciation questioned what to do if a terrible disaster was about to befall the Earth:

If you could decide what if you could decide what 40 people you put on the spacecraft that would save humanity, how many of those would be same-sex couples? You’re wanting to save humankind for posterity, basically a modern-day Noah, you have that ability to be a modern day Noah, you can preserve life. How many same-sex couples would you take from the animal kingdom and from humans to put on a spacecraft to perpetuate humanity and the wildlife kingdom?”

I'd rather be stuck in space with every gay couple I've ever known than stuck in space than with someone like Gohmert.

"Representative Gohmert, please report to the airlock, right away...."

Forty people is not a big number to work with, even for just plain basic survival labor needs. Reproduction?--heck, 35 fertile females, 5 fertile males, AND a big store of frozen semen doesn't seem like it's going to provide sufficient genetic diversity--even if your females can have a child every 2 years on the dot.

Aside from the general observation that Gohmert appears to be frothing at the mouth mad, what exactly is he trying to say? That gay people can't be astronauts? That claim is already false, since Sally Ride had a long-term female partner (I don't know how Ride identified, since she was once married to a man as well, so I hesitate to call her a lesbian), and it wouldn't surprise me if there were other LGBT astronauts we don't know about. If Gohmert is talking about some kind of doomsday scenario where the earth is about to end and a small group of people must be chosen to continue the human race in space, I assume he knows that there isn't a human colony on another planet yet, which makes such a plan moot. We also haven't figured out how to live in low orbit space long-term, so we couldn't have a Skylab-like space colony either, at least not one that could accommodate thousands of people living there for decades on end. If we do establish off-Earth colonies, most humans, regardless of their sexuality would still live on Earth. Even when there was large-scale European migration to the Americas, most Europeans still stayed at home. I know I shouldn't be looking for logic in this crazy screed, but I hope someone called him out on his nonsense.

Rep. Gohmert saying something intelligent and sensible would be a sign of the Apocalypse.

IIRC Gohmert's district includes Big Sandy.   Just throwing that out there.
