I always wonder: is Anna not allowed to get a divorce in the state of Arkansas because they have a covenant marraige? I see that you can get a divorce when one is unfaithful but Josh didn't actually admit to anyone in particular. The unfaithfulness could be something like watching porn, which would probably not be ruled unfaithfulness by a judge, so Anna can not get a divorce under the law of covenant marriage?

Could that be it?

They were married in Anna's home state of Florida, where there are no convenant marriages.

Exactly - they wouldn't have a covenant marriage because Florida doesn't have them (and didn't at the time of the marriage). I don't believe that there's a way to change an existing marriage to a covenant marriage after the fact (but please correct me if I'm wrong!) but even if there were, it'd be pointless anyway since, as @Lurky mentioned, it doesn't prohibit divorce at all - just makes it less easy and quick to get.

I have an observation about this whole "covenant marriage" thing.  I wonder if it's just a way to differentiate a fundie marriage from a regular run-of-the-mill marriage.  Since heathens and gay people have a Regular Marriage, fundies get to have a super special Covenant Marriage.  Which is for super special people.  I can see this taking off in other states as well, at least among the fundie crowd. Maybe over time, other states will be pressured to have Covenant Marriages too, as a backlash to gay marriage.   Rediculous, but so is having a over large umpa lumpa for a president.   Hahaha

I imagine Anna maybe has felt similarity to Glinda in Wicked?

Quote

GLINDA

Yes -

We couldn't be happier,

Right, dear?

Couldn't be happier

Right here

Look what we've got

A fairy-tale plot

Our very own happy ending

Where we couldn't be happier -

True, dear?

Couldn't be happier

And we're happy to share

Our ending vicariously

With all of you

He couldn't look handsomer

I couldn't feel humbler

We couldn't be happier

Because happy is what happens

When all your dreams come true!

...

That's why I couldn't be happier

No, I couldn't be happier

Though it is, I admit

The tiniest bit

Unlike I anticipated

But I couldn't be happier

Simply couldn't be happier

(spoken) Well - not "simply":

(sung) 'Cause getting your dreams

It's strange, but it seems

A little - well - complicated

There's a kind of a sort of : cost

There's a couple of things get: lost

There are bridges you cross

You didn't know you crossed

Until you've crossed

And if that joy, that thrill

Doesn't thrill you like you think it will

Still... Who

Wouldn't be happier?

So I couldn't be happier

Because happy is what happens

When all your dreams come true

Well, isn't it?

I have to wonder what motivation if any does a fundie husband have to be a decent husband/father. Sure they espouse a belief in Jesus, but they have an unending "forgiveness ticket" which can be punched ad nauseum. Then the whole having a built in authority base with devine authority supposedly guiding everything.

The fundie husband and father does get away with a lot. I'm sure that the women are blamed more often than the men.

As long as a fundy man proclaims that he loves Jesus, he is considered a good husband and father. Nothing that happens is his fault. It's the fault of his wife, heathens or Satan.

It's why abusive, narcissistic assholes are drawn to it.  Nothing they do is their fault.  They are always right, and their shortcomings get blamed elsewhere.

Absolutely! You would not believe some of the carp I was blamed for by my ex and his family - up to and including allowing my baby to "willfully" look over my shoulder at his father "with a look of 'ha, she's mine now, not yours!' " - he was just shy of 3mts at that point. I still have the scar on my foot from that one.

The God given authority thing and the handy puppet persona of a devil ('wasn't me, HE made me do it...') is just horrendously dangerous. - and needs to be way more openly talked about.

That is so terrible! I'm glad that you have made it out. And I hope that you are doing much better now.
