Some of these thing, if you don't eat them as a kid you never will. Jello frightens my kids ☺

Agree.  I grew up eating Jello, molded and not (but with nothing other than fruit and/or whipped cream added), and it still seems very normal to me.  Never could stand the lime flavor though, and I wouldn't touch Jello that has "other" additions with a ten-foot pole.

I'm seeing two sides of this issue, but am not sure if either is accurate. Part of me is appalled at the girls lack of homemaking knowledge, since that is the only job they can prepare for. On the other hand, I think Michelle checked out on everything but babies years ago, so between the girls' sibling parenting responsibilities, home schooling responsibilities, and basic household survival chores (think basic food, picking up when filming, etc), there was no time to teach them how to run a household. Who would teach them? Michelle? I think we've repeatedly discredited this on the board.

I'd cross educational responsibilities off the list.

In terms of teaching, I very much doubt that any J girl was teaching any academic subjects. Monitoring who was on what computer program, sure, but not actually home schooling anyone. Plus, I think the older girls checked out on their own education pretty early on. I'm not sure that Jill or Jessa even completed the GED testing.

Not even mini marshmallows?!?!?!?

The meal was extremely basic and simple and nothing to "teach" anyone about (I didn't watch the video, but from what is described here) but it sounds like something I'd be happy enough to eat (provided fake chicken or tofu or something was substituted, as I don't eat meat). But personally, I sooo prefer raw vegetables whenever possible. If it had sauteed tomato and zucchini, fine, but I'd enjoy the raw tomato and cucumber way more. I just love the texture of raw veggies. If all those anti-gay-marriage people are right and pretty soon we'll all just be able to marry whatever, I might just marry a tomato. And cheat on it with an orange bell pepper.

I don't know if the people liking my message were liking it based on my hilarious jokes (lol) or because they agree about the extreme deliciousness of raw tomatoes and peppers (or both!), but if anyone is interested, I can post a recipe for the best pasta salad in the world. I got the basic recipe from a cook book but have adapted it to my own tastes, after making it a hundred billion times over the last 15 years. I hate cooking and rarely do it, but this is the one thing I regularly make, and it's always a huge hit with everyone.

I think at least Jessa did, cause I seem to remember a video of Jim Bob announcing Jessa's GED and how she earned it earlier than she would have earned a high scho diploma or something like that.

I have an old coper mold that, I believe, used to belong to my aunt who recently passed away.  Eventually, I'd like to hang it on my kitchen wall, but I'll probably never use it for anything except decoration.

Not sure if any of them have GED's and I'm fairly certain their education was the basics of reading and math, and some good old conservative white washed history lessons, and the basics on a few other topics.  Not enough to encourage critical thinking or independent thought, just enough to keep them from, I was going to say humping each other in public but then I remembered :output_eeMbjt:  I'm guessing they only have a rudimentary knowledge on everything, even biblically. They know all the stories and versus and what they were told they meant but none of them could apply one to a life situation that wasn't preassigned.

Coy Koi's Best Pasta Salad Ever

--------------------------------------------

This is exactly how I make it, and it very easily lends to all kinds of alterations, as I'm sure you can all figure out

Main ingredients:

3/4 of a 16 oz box of rotini pasta, cooked

1+ cup of frozen peas, thawed (I use no-salt-added petite peas, but anything works, and you can thaw them out in the colander under a few seconds of hot water)

1 large chopped red/orange/yellow bell pepper

2 chopped roma tomatoes

1+ cups chopped mozzarella cheese

Sauce ingredients:

about 3/4 of a 15-oz can of tomato sauce

2 1/2 tbsp. olive oil

1 1/2 tbsp. red wine vinegar

a heaping teaspoon of jarred, fresh, or dried chopped basil

a heaping teaspoon of jarred, fresh, or dried oregano (I've only used jarred for both)

a half-teaspoon of jarred minced garlic

a heaping half-teaspoon of black pepper

Directions:

Cook pasta according to package directions. Rinse in cold water and return to pot. Add peas (it helps them to thaw). Chop cheese and vegetables and mix with pasta. Mix all sauce ingredients in a small bowl, and then pour over pasta mixture.

There are SO many ways to make this pasta salad your own, but this is just how I do it when I'm trying to make a treat. If I'm trying to be hardcore healthy I'll add the steamed broccoli and more veggies, etc. But this pasta salad as I've said it, it's not just a healthy treat, it's a TREAT.

Cracked has several hilarious articles where a guy cooks a bunch of nasty recipes from 50's and 60's magazines. Au gratin, meat and fish jello, mustard... Gross, but I was crying laughing when I finished reading.

And there went my appetite. I'm just glad I'm not that poor guy who had to make himself eat that stuff he made.

Wasn't there a #KAC episode that featured a graduation party for Jill? Or was that just my imagination/for another kid?

On this blog http://www.midcenturymenu.com/  the author prepares some pretty scary recipes and her husband usually taste-tests them.  His reactions are pretty funny when he doesn't like something, although he seems pretty deadpan most of the time.

I will! I love veggies and this salad will be perfect with grilled fish, chicken, and even ribs. I may make a batch before then, I have most if not all of the ingredients on hand. I need this salad to get in my belly!

I don't think you'll be disappointed! The sauce also works for any other pasta dish. As ridiculously simple as it is, it's really delicious.

Have you seen the Supersizers Go? It's a BBC series (it's all on YouTube!) and a comedian and a restaurant critic eat historically-accurate meals for a week at a time, from ancient Rome to the 1980s. I gotta say, the Duggars' meals remind me of the 50s and 60s. Canned convenience food for cheap.

Omg, more binge TV to explore. I can never get enough! :)

My mother had those copper molds hanging in our kitchen, as did a lot of my friends back in the old days.

Ours were just for decoration. ;)

My husband and I are fans of old movies. It's fun to guess the release date based on the clothes and cars, but also if the kitchen has copper fish molds hanging on the wall. If the living room has a barometer on the wall, it's probably very early 80s, max. After that all the barometers seemed to disappear.

We had a barometer in our living room until the early 80s when we moved to a newer house. I used to like watching storms come in on that thing. :). Now I guess there's the weather channel... I'd still like to find a nice barometer for my living room, though. I feel an eBay session coming on... ;)

My late stepgrandmother had a recipe involving orange Jello with shredded carrots and pineapple in it that she served at holiday meals.  (My mom said that I ate more carrots then than normal).

I remember devouring that stuff.  If I could find the recipe, I'd actually make it again.

But Jello with something other than produce in it (my mom served it mixed with canned fruit cocktail) sounds nasty.  Definitely not with meat in it.

My mom still makes a congealed cranberry salad thing every Thanksgiving.  It's not bad but it's not my favorite.  I have a weird thing about Jello anyway. It's a texture thing with me.

The most I've ever done with Jello is use an antique fish-shaped Jello mold to make the classiest Jello shots ever.

I think Josh would have been perfectly happy married.

IF....

If he had been allowed to date.

If he had been allowed to go to high school or at least some kind of clown college.

If he had been allowed to have pre-marital sex.

If he had been able to choose his own wife.

If he was older when he was married.

With none of that having happened, Josh is so messed up, I doubt he will be able to leave.

And, as the other posted said "If he could use birth control

J/M "learned to Gothard" on Josh. He was never a teenager--that isn't allowed. He had to dress like a Gothard male, work like a man at manual labor when he should have been in school. He had the pressure to always be a good example to the others. He was the oldest so he often was left in charge--and, no I don't blame J/M on this it is normal to be the oldest in charge in parents' nights out and similar--they like all parents would not think "He might molest the girls."

He was put into an arranged engagement at something like 16.  Since we've never seen graduation photos (anyone find them?) he may have failed at ALERT.

If Josh had at least had the privacy of taking a shower ALONE with no one else using the bathroom at the same time (virtually impossible in their older houses) he could have found a minute or two for "normal" and survived.

If his father wasn't the horniest man alive, always showing off what he could do, Josh would have stood a much better chance at "regulating" his desires.

If Josh had been given the opportunity to question and explore ANYTHING except manual labor....

If Josh had been encouraged to do something hard--like JD's pilot training, he would have had a way to divert his "sinful feelings" and put his mind to use for a change.

I think Michelle really, sincerely, was devastated by Josh's actions, but I think JB was like that in his younger days--probably had Penthouse in the nightstand.

I think as a teen he was far too sexually frustrated. Had he been allowed to date--even heavily chaperoned dating, but with different girls, he could have dealt with it all very differently. Had he been allowed to watch normal PG13 RomComs--nothing too sleezy,--it would have helped him understand "normal."

Billions of people worldwide have waited until marriage for sex--I don't think there's anything odd about that. I just think sex was built up as the be-all, end-all, now you're a man thing. Sick, sick, sick.

I do not think Josh is sexually attracted to children. From what we've seen he does genuinely love his kids. I don't think they are in danger.

I do think that he was traumatized by his first exposures to porn--it was cognatative dissonance for him. He may, like my poor son, have stumbled on S/M thanks to someone else's joke or carelessness--if it WAS in a campaign office that he first looked at it, then there were no filters and things were much easier to get to back in that day. Imagine? Sheltered, sex only in marriage, only for procreation and then you see even mild porn? Trauma.

I think also he did the porn star to GET CAUGHT. The guilt must have been overwhelming--look at his weight during that time.

I don't feel sorry for him or defend him---I just think there's more to this.

As for poor Anna--I think her folks just married her off. Leave and Cleave, baby.

image.jpegI have some good news: the treehouse still stands! And one of the younger boys was working and mowing the property line  south of the road. Didn't see any Joshly Madison out and about tho.

(And for the worriers, the above is the only photo I took, and I didn't linger about)

I think you are onto something.

Here's another issue.  JB is a pervert period.  The guy thinks with his 'other head'.  Look at all the PDA he does with Michelle in front of his children (which sometimes he later rubs in their face that they can't do the same) as well as knocking her up 19 times (counting miscarriages).  The Putt-Putt should be a family friendly venue, not a place to dry-hump your wife :output_eeMbjt:  This is something he says he would not want his kids exposed to (because God forbid his boys see a woman at the beach/pool in a normal swimsuit) but he has no problem doing it in front of other people's kids.  I'd clutch my pearls more to see the dry-humping in public than someone wearing shorts and a tank top on a hot day.

Josh is a product of his own upbringing.  If they wanted to correct the behavior, they should have lead by example.  But it should surprise no one that a father who is a pervert raised a son who is one.  Truthfully I am surprised that none of the other Duggar men are as horny as JB and Josh.  (You don't see JD or Joseph, both older than Josh when he got married, rushing to the altar in order to get laid).

As for Anna-- well her father is not exactly known for picking decent husbands for his (still fundie) daughters.  He saw Josh Duggar as a way to elevate the Keller family to ATI royalty (face it, TFDW married Priscilla for access to the Duggars).  And one less mouth to feed.  I wish she wasn't so brainwashed and would listen to Daniel and Suze and accept their offers for help.  But she's marinating in Kool-Aid.

Further proof that it was built by professionals and not the Duggars.
