More fundie bride weirdness

Just came across this video of the Duggars on SYTTD. Note how Michelle won't let the woman help her dress cus she doesn't want to be touched. Also love how they call it 'modern modest' whilst wearing hairstyles from 1986. Scary how high her modesty bodice was as well!

Nice of JimBob to not even pay for his bride to get a wedding dress of her own first time round. I think this shows how interfering he is that he can't even stand back and let Michelle have an opinion on something so utterly feminine and unimportant overall.

OMG DEFRAUDING photo of Michelle in tight trousers at 7:38! I also love how they pose JimBob next to a strapless boob wedding dress for his mini-interview: what if he stumbles at the hint of boobage on the mannequin?

That whole episode was a disaster! It made me feel so bad for the people working there and the other people shopping there. If you've read my comments on other blogs, you know that I am extremely tolerant of kids doing annoying things in public, but this crosses a line even for me. This is a time when the little kids should not have been dragged along. I could also do without Anna's smug remark about a strapless wedding dress not even being a dress. We get it, she don't show your shoulders! She doesn't have to insult everyone who does.

That episode was just.....ugh.

The dress started out as very pretty but then they had to go and fuck it up for "modesty".

ETA: WHY are you getting a WHITE dress when your 500 kids are going to be there?!

I love how JB didn't like the first one because it wasn't white enough! Hate to break it to you, but she's pretty much lost the "purity" after 25 years and 18.5 kids.

Hey, that's totally modern compared to the 1886-style prairie dresses that the Bateses used to rock...

PICTURES. NOW. Do we need a LOLBates thread?

My mum didn't even wear a white dress to her original wedding as she thought it was inappropriate for a 31 year old woman. Michelle is 45!

How about video? This is not the worst bunch of dresses, though. They had some others at some point that were a very bright green/pink/purple combo and really drew the eye. I'm not bashing them too hard, because I'm pretty sure Michaela made them, and it's good sewing for a teenager. But I imagine it would be much easier for her if she could just make some cute skirts instead...

Oh, snap, it's the same episode. If you watch the second part, you can see the real prairie dresses.

Was it the Bateses or another fundie family that had all the girls wear prairie dresses that matched their buddy's? I think it was a family with a lot of girls, but the girls would wear matching colors (i.e., a pair in pink, a pair in purple, etc). Does that ring a bell for anyone?

Two things I love about the Bates video posted.

First, when the boys are skateboarding past Joy on the porch and wonders out loud "What is his name?"

The second thing is Michelle and Kelly seem truly happy to see each other. It does make me smile to know at least they got a lot of enjoyment out of being together.

I still had cable when Michelle and JimBoob renewed their vows. I know lots of people who renew their vows at 25 years but I've never known anyone to wear a wedding dress for it. I found that just too weird. And wasn't fairly close to when Josh and Anna were going to wed?

J&A were already married at the time. Anna was something like 7 months pregnant w/ Kynzie at the vow renewal.

I'm sure the wedding dress thing was only put together so that they could do a crossover w/ SYTTD. They may have even pushed the whole vow renewal ceremony for that purpose.

They couldn't find a more fitting modesty bodice? The rest of the dress is all gathered and beaded... then you have what looks like a cheapo white t-shirt from the bargain bin at Albertson's up on top.

I have a friend that was horrified when she got married and her husband's family expected her to wear a white dress to the wedding, because in her culture, white is a funerary color and it's bad luck to wear it to your wedding. She was going to wear a really lovely red cheongsam she brought with her from China, but her mother-in-law wouldn't have it. So they ended up compromising and she wore a pale pink dress. Not quite white, but light enough to satisfy mother-in-law.

Yes, but a well-tailored fichu, modesty bodice, or shrug wouldn't scream "WE'RE BEING MODEST, LOOKIT LOOKIT, SEE HOW SEPARATED WE ARE" to everyone watching.

The reason they give for Michelle wanting a white dress for their 25 year renewal was because she'd worn her mother-in-law's dress when they got married. What's wrong with wearing a borrowed dress? Lots of brides wear gowns that have been worn previously. Some families pass down dresses for all the brides in the family.

Do mother in laws really get that much say? I love my mother in law, but what I wear is my business, especially on a big day like that!

I've never met my friend's mother-in-law, but from what I understand, she can get extremely nasty if she doesn't get her way.

Was she Indian, by any chance?

I'm also more squicked out by how many times JB & Michelle had to smooch in front of the kids and the sales associates during the fitting. It was what? 8 times in a 9-minute video?

Chinese.

But I have Indian friends who have told me that it's pretty much the same in their culture- white is for funerals, anyone who would wear it to a wedding is crazy.

I don't know if they get that much say, but mine certainly acted as if she did. In fact she meddled so much in our wedding planning that my husband and I ended up eloping. Her own wedding was an early-70's hippy affair (she 8 months pregnant, wearing a pink muu-muu, groom had a brown Fortrell suit, 10 guests, homemade cake), and her daughter is 40 and showing no interest in getting married, so it was her only chance to "plan a proper wedding"... with my own minimum-wage-earned savings, of course!

Jim bob says to Michelle "Do you like this dress or do you want a whiter dress?" Instead of being passive aggressive and cagey, why doesn't he just say "I don't like this dress Michelle." You can *almost* see annoyance in Michelle's face when he says that. She's good at putting herself in check though.

Oh yes, I remember this episode. I'm surprised the duggars even filmed themselves in the bridal shop. I remember there was other girls around them with very "immodest" dresses on. I remember Anna snickering about it. The younger kids were completely out of control and bored, they should not have all been there. Michelle should of went with some of the older girls and Anna and left JimBob and the boys and younger kids back at the hotel. They were in New Yourk so i'm sure there was something they could of done like going to the park or something. The dress with all the extra fabric made an otherwise pretty dress really ugly.

Just to inject some reality, white wedding dresses have nothing to do with purity. They became popular as an ostentatious display of wealth for being so impractical that they could only be worn once.

      Stupid loneliness!
Kid 1 went back to college (yeah! But sad foe me, she stayed with me all summer. It was nice to start a new phase in our mother/daughter relationship)
Zero prospects on dates. (Not that I have tried online dating, scared of that but I have reached put to a new group at church, etc.
I asked a friend to go to dinner the other night so I wasn't eating alone, again. The friend had plans, all my friends always have plans. I see stuff on social media, I'm never invited. I'm single, I'm the 3rd or 5th wheel.
My one parent friend at kid 2's fall sport won't be there because their daughter made varsity (Yeah for her!!! Seriously happy for her. Sad for me for another sport I basically sit alone, did that majority of spring and summer sporting events.)
And now I'm crying as my mom told me 2 different funny stores that former teachers remembered about my twin. Both stories were about how they got a crack out of my twin's antics (my parents went to a funeral today and saw former colleagues). Teachers remember me (after all I was a twin and teachers' kid) but none would have memorable stories of me.
      I feel invisible.
Don't worry, this will pass,  it always does. I just need a pity party for a few days. I'm not in anyway going to harm myself. As lonely as I am, I have a very full life I (usually) love. I just needed to vent and cry for a moment.
If you are still reading this, thanks Fjer. 😊

Absolutely awful about the fires on Maui. In 2019, I stayed in Lahaina. I liked to sit on the sea wall, which is the only structure left now, and watch the water. People are receiving help, but many had to leave pets. Please donate to the Maui Humane Society, which is leading efforts to find, treat, and reunite pets.
