Hi, @Sicily, and a rather belated welcome to FJ.  Yes, we have information on the Servens and many other families.  There are also oodles of cat lovers here and quite a few people who have rejected religion.

Well, if you’re going to go with cat lovers who have rejected religion...

Coincidentally, we Just had a member asking if anyone had experience with pet bunnies, grumpy or otherwise.  Calling @EmainMacha, here's your chance.  :)

Welcome!  We are not too many degrees of separation from each other.  You are a PT.  I am an RN.  You have a pet rabbit and I have 2 guinea pigs.

Hi everybody!

I'm 23 years old, go to college part-time, work in retail full-time, and hope to become a grant writer someday. There's no significant other or children to speak of at this time, but I do have a very spoiled feline headship who thinks he is the boss of me (and is kind of right in that assumption).

I'd been lurking for the past 1 1/2 years and had wanted to join for awhile, but just took the time to register this weekend. I am definitely happy to finally be on here!

@TheLastFundiecorn, welcome to FJ! It's great that you took the time to de-lurk. You have way more self-control than I do to lurk for so long. (I can be kind of hard to shut up sometimes. :kitty-wink: )

Which discussions do you spend most of your FJ time reading? I came for the Duggars after 19 Kids and Counting imploded, but I like to read most areas of FJ. I haven't read in the Anderson forum much, but I did get lured in by the thread title that included "porn movie" awhile ago. :pb_lol:

Hello! I hope I'm doing this correctly! I've been lurking for....years and years. ? I don't remember what brought me here initially (it may have been when I stumbled upon Erika Shupe's old blog and was like wtf is this I must know more), but I finally decided today was the day to join.

You are doing it perfectly, and welcome!  Also welcome @TheLastFundiecorn. :)

I think most of us tend to focus on only a few families at a time because FJ is so big.  Have fun exploring the site now you have joined.  And please post away.

The Andersons are a good example of me running out of WTFs, but that porn movie thread got me too.  :D

We all have our favorite hate reads, but with some of these people you can only say WTF so many times.  I'm taking a self-imposed break from the Maxwells at the moment because I swear Steve has a bad effect on my blood pressure.

Hello, I'm another lurker who has finally registered :) I'm a 54yo woman, married to my husband for 30 years, with 4 children. I'm Orthodox Christian and a homeschooler but consider myself liberal/progressive (although due to being a homeschooler, I've certainly had a few experiences with fundies). In terms of pets, we currently have 3 cats: Murphy, Nigel and Harry. We had a bunny for 12 years, but he passed away earlier this year. And we have an elderly goldfish.

I mainly follow the Rods and the Duggars, and I've read some of the Gwen Shamblin threads. So yeah, hi, hello, that's me in a nutshell, nice to meet all of you!

Hello!

I'm an evil Catholic from Europe. I found the Duggars years ago when I was looking for "famous" people sharing a birthday with me and the winner was Johannah Duggar! I never really watched 19kac and Co but from time to time I just wanted to know what the Duggars were doing.

I think I came to FJ for the first time when I was pregnant and wanted to know which Duggar was pregnant with me (Joy, Kendra and Jinger were). Since then I became interested in other fundie families live the Rods, the Bateses and the Shraders.

I'm not a native speaker and I know that my English is far from perfect but I always want to improve. So feel free to correct me if I make any mistakes!

Hello Free Jinger!

I'm a long time lurker, and joined because y'all are fascinating!

I'm also hoping you brilliant people can help me out- I'm currently enrolled in a grad level history class called "Prophets, Sects, and Cults" and need to do a final paper on a topic pertaining to that. I'd love to do something about the Quiverfull movement, but I'm worried there isn't enough critical information and history available to adequately write the paper as a history; I'm know there's plenty of information about the topic in general, my main concern is that most of it would lead to a more sociological paper than a history paper, if I'm explaining myself well.

Is there an existent list of sources that I can peruse, or do you have suggestions for sources?

Also, do you know of another interesting topic that could fit the theme of the class that might be more viable? The paper has to be roughly 20 pages.

Thanks, and I'm glad to meet y'all!

Hello from another forever lurker who started reading here around the time of Jinger Duggar's wedding, was hooked by JRod and is now fascinated by the likes of John Schrader, Bro Gary and the unbelievable Gwen (Shamblin) Lara and her cult.

I'm an ebil Catholic (on paper) from Europe, 37, with two still growing (one currently below, one above 100cm) humans and one mid sized dog to take care of. Also not an English native, but I work hard on not letting people notice that too much.

If anyone given my previous reading wants to point me in the general direction of other fascinating rabbit holes to dive into, I shall be truly grateful..

Although I hate to admit it, things that happened in my lifetime now qualify as history.   My question would be whether Quiverfull qualified as a cult or sect in the terms of your history class.

I think the Quiverfull Movement was originally a woman-led backlash against the Feminist Movement and developed at around the same time the so-called Christian or Biblical Patriarchy Movement hit its stride.   Although QF and Biblical Patriarchy obviously overlap a lot.

I think your starting point is probably to read Quiverfull: Inside the Christian Patriarchy Movement by Kathryn Joyce, if you haven't already done so.  Then do more research on the backgrounds and development of vile Nancy Campbell of Above Rubies, and the equally vile Mary Pride.  .https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Pride.   I think there is plenty of material to fill up a 20 page paper just looking at the history of those two.  I'd better stop now because I want to write the paper for you.  Good luck and please let us know how it goes.

JRod, Shrader, Bro. Gary ... it looks as though you share my interest in fake missionaries. :) We have a couple of threads on Jody Hodnett who is trying to convert Scotland too.  Other rabbit holes could be the Maxwell family, probably worth exploring for their strangeness.  They are connected by marriage to the Bontragers who have a lot more fun.  Or the Robo-Botkins, we have a thread going on QoS about them at the moment but there is plenty in the archives.  Or the Arndt's man-boys, some approaching 40 and still living safe at home, are endlessly fascinating even though nothing ever changes.

I would never have guessed English was not your first language because your writing is perfect.

Indeed I do! Thanks for the recommendations, I'll put the Christianisation of Scotland on top of my reading list, that sounds just perfect :)

Hodnett is back in the archives and may not be easy to find.  Here's the first thread to save you time.  We discuss a few other missionaries to Europe there too.

Thanks so much for the information, I'll definitely look into those suggestions. As for fitting the topic, my professor said it's pretty loose, so I'm not too worried. One of the other students is doing incels, which isn't technically religious, but that doesn't necessarily have to be. This week we read about the Manson family, and while Charles Manson talked about Jesus, that's definitely not a religious cult.

Hello everyone!

I’m a 33 years old single gal from France. So… sorry if it’s hard for you to understand me, I struggle with verbal tense and I might (let’s be honest I will) use more past tense than necessary.

I felt down the fundie hole because some chanel broadcasted the first seasons of « Bringing Up Bates» last summer and I got hooked. I knew a bit of the Duggars but we hadn’t had shows to “spy” on them so the Bates’ show had me lurking through internet where I found Jrod, Zsu et al.

I’m an attorney with a bachelor’s in American studies. American religious sects has always been an interest of mine and study focus as well as religious fundamentalism in general.

Southern patriarchy and gender roles has also been an interest and study area.

I grew up in California in a very liberal, European family but as a child was fascinated with Pentecostal Christians and spent hours glued to tv watching various programs involving such groups. It scared my mother.

My spouse actually comes from one of these families and experienced serious religious abuse as a result.  She has PTSD from her experiences and is quite distant from her family as a result. That has shown me a real life and personal example of the dangers of these sects, especially to someone intelligent, individualistic, artistic, or Queer.

Her focus of study as an academic (with which I’m too familiar now as her editor and sounding board) is gender, sexuality and religion.

Hi, everyone! I'm not new to FJ really. I've been here for a few years now.

I'm currently a 21 year old community college student majoring in music business and I plan to transfer to a 4-year college/university next fall. Not sure which college I will transfer to, but I'll probably going to stay in-state even though I want to go to school in Tennesse (near Nashville would be nice). I have a part time job working as a tutor at my cc's writing center and I hope to work at my transfer college's writing center once I transfer next year.

I grew up being both homeschooled and public schooled. We started out homeschooling and then my sister wanted to go to public school for high school. After she graduated high school I started public school. I started public school at age 11 and was in the 4th grade. I was supposed to be in 6th grade, but because my parents didn't check what our homeschool textbooks were teaching us (we used the same textbooks that the Duggars and the Bates used. Switched on Schoolhouse and Abeka. Despite my grandmother being a teacher and having degrees in teaching/education and was a curriculum specialist. My parents didn't want her help I guess). I was in public school from 4th grade to the first semester of 8th grade. In 8th grade, I had undiagnosed depression and just stopped caring about most things and wanted to be taken out of school so I went back to being homeschooled, but luckily this time I was able to choose the homeschool program and I choose an online secular high school. Go me! I graduated in 2017 and took a gap year in between my last year of high school and my first year of college. I'm currently a sophomore in college.  Growing up our family was what I call fundie-adjunct. We weren't really fundie/evangelical but the community we were around all the time was since we were apart of a homeschooling community.  My parents were more strict before I was born, but after I was born they weren't strick at all. I've personally never believed in a God or Gods. I've always considered myself an atheist. I am also a trans guy. I'm queer and very liberal. My relationship status is... complicated? I kinda have a boyfriend, but not really? We're best friends but we met only 3 years ago and have never met in person. But that's going to change when I go visit him during spring break next semester! After that hopefully my relationship status will say that I am in a relationship :) I'm really into Taylor Swift, Star Wars, and Hamilton. My Hogwarts house is Gryffindor and I am a leo. Double lion for the win!!

I joined on October 23rd when I could no longer read about the train wreck that is Jill Rodrigues.

I have been married for over ¼ century to my high school sweetheart. I did not court him or save my first kiss for our wedding. I am currently an elementary school teacher. I am a mom to two adult sons that I am so very proud of. I also am a mom to my three adorable doggies. My hobbies include sewing, decorating, and going to Chicago Blackhawk games.
