I laughed out loud at the thought of a Duggar son joining the real military!

Both Austria and Switzerland have a compulsory military service for men (it's voluntary for women), so I know a lot of people who were/are in the army (including my brother), and I've heard a lot of reports over the years from different people. If the US Army is anything like that, they are as wordly (nike!!) as it gets.

In the army, the Duggarlings would have to deal with a lot of different people from various backgrounds. Most of them would probably be the "wrong kind of" Christians, or have a different religion altogether, or even be ebil atheists. They could, oh the horror!, encounter women and would have to work with them without any chaperones present, and, even worse, those ebil gays don't have to hide in the closet anymore :pearlclutching:. In their free time, the soldiers like to listen to heathen music, talk about all kinds of things including girls and sex (nike!!) and also like to have a beer or two. Honestly, I'd feel sorry for a Duggar trapped in the army, they would be the butt of jokes.

My brother is in the armed services over here in the US and I would literally love to see him trying to work with the Duggars, or vice versa. My brother is a pretty chill guy but by every definition the Duggars use, he is as worldly as they come. And not the kind of person to keep his opinions to himself! A recipe for a corrupting influence.

But didn't he also get caught with porn (which is on this stupid form) when he was a teenager? Or was that just an assumption?

On the form they spelled it "pornograph'. :)

Maybe they were asking if anyone had used a phonograph to listen to some old- timey music with a backbeat.

Maybe going to Alert is like wealthy people sending their kids to expensive boarding schools. It is a point of pride and envy in the fundy community. Like a fundy Caste system, if you can't afford to go then your family is not one of the special families. $4k for a 9 or 10 week worthless program is ridiculous. Some private schools cost less than that for the whole school year. I wonder how most families pay for it. How do they decide which son gets to go? I can't imagine that families can afford to send every son to Alert. It is interesting that Joseph was allowed to go to Alert and go to Crown College for a year. Maybe Jim Bob has plans for him.

The ability to come up with funds for ALERT or JTTH is proof they they fundie better than the other fundies and God loves them best.

Or that they have a lot of teens they're too lazy/disinterested to actually parent.

Do these people have a functional definition of heart? I'm assuming they don't mean the big muscle group in their left ribcage cavity that has 4 chambers and pumps oxygenated blood to the body, and is the thing JB will require bypass on if he keeps eating tater tot casserole all the time.

So it's not a literal thing, but they talk as if it is. Is your heart "all of your feelings"? is it your thought life? is it an attachment to a person? WHAT is it??

I get the feeling from the way the girls talk that they've never actually considered it.  They've just learned the lines "giving away pieces of your heart" and "know your child's heart" or whatever, and don't pause to consider what they even mean by that. Sharing your feelings with someone doesn't make them go away, or gone, or not a part of you anymore.

They talk about "a love that multiplies" with more kids, but then act like they will lose actual pieces of themselves if they get attached in any way to someone outside the family.  The fear mongering is real in the duggar household.

To the bolded, I think this though process is you can't trust anyone unless you really know them, as family loves you and never betray you, except they did, and continue to. This is the ultimate in control, not allowing your children access to anyone or anything that isn't pre-approved and supervised.

$4,000 a trip?!??!?! And Josiah went how many times? What did he do for JB to shill out that kind of money?

Maybe they'd have to do a lot less of "buying used and saving the difference" if they cut back on pricey para-military brainwashing fundie camps.

You know, I just thought about this: I know that ATI/IBLP isn't going around blowing up buildings or sending people with bomb belts into parks full of innocent people, and I know that the answer is probably "cause it's OK when white people do it" but why is a paramilitary training camp in rural Texas that indoctrinates young men into a radical, puritanical form of Christianity any different from a paramilitary training camp in rural Pakistan that indoctrinates young men into a radical, puritanical form of Islam?

I was curious about that question too.  What business is it of theirs? Also, what do they consider beating? Do they discount the rod from their parents?  Where's the line? And wouldn't this require them to tell on their parents in some circumstances?

The thing that got be with the molestation question was "If yes, please explain" :SURLEQ:

How is this glorified summer camp worst $4,000? Holy shit.

I think Josiah was working there some of the time. Maybe he got paid, or at least was not charged. I think he spent about a year there.

Maybe they make the kids, doing whatever jobs they can, save up their money and pay their own way into the camps.

I went on an awesome study abroad trip for less than USD$4k. What a rip off this ALERT nonsense is.

That would be so shitty! Truly the lowest of the low would make their kids spend 4k to be further brainwashed!

Or maybe he was just that desperate to get out of the TTH. I know that if I had to deal with JB and Michelle that much, plus the antics of that many siblings, I would want to get out by any means necessary. He may have even believed that the stuff that goes on at ALERT would be good for him. We don't know how steeped he is in the cult aside from snippets on THs.

I am actually surprised that this "organization" has not been infiltrated in the past. My son recently graduated from college and is applying to grad school. I could probably bribe him into doing it for a case or two of beer. He enjoys a challenge. Of course he won't last long and being the product of divorce may disqualify him out of the gate. But it'd be super fun to get a true perspective on this.

I've considered doing it. I'm in the right age range, hell of an actor, and women are valuable commodities in their circle. Haven't excluded the possibility, just haven't had the time to do it.

Being a child of divorce won't disqualify him, but Jesus will probably lay it on his heart to stop talking to you.

The thing is that the most religious individuals are not necessarily the ones who become conservative religious activists or the ones who become religious terrorists. For example, we can probably think of many people in our own lives who are against abortion in some way, but are not anti-abortion activists. They may feel extremely strongly about the issue, but they aren't spending their Saturdays protesting in front of PP or lobbying the government for TRAP laws. Many of the young people who join ISIS aren't particularly devout, which is why their friends go on TV after the fact to voice their surprise that so and so didn't pray or go to the mosque, so how did s/he end up joining ISIS? Many of them are confused and marginalized youth who are easy prey for recruiters on social media. It shouldn't come as a surprise that many ISIS fighters were involved in petty crime, since prison is a great place to find Yahweh or Allah, as well as people with chips on their shoulders wanting revenge on the societies that put them there. I'm actually surprised that American prisons don't spawn more Islamic radicals like European prisons, but that could just be because the Christian fundies have a lock on prison ministries.

Gothardism is a bit different, since it's a total lifestyle that you have to be 100% committed to, but I would say that both the Duggars and the Bateses (that is, JB and Michelle and Gil and Kelly) both seem to have been recruited into ATI at vulnerable point in their lives, which is consistent with the literature on people who become anti-abortion activists and the literature of people who join extremist groups in general. However, in spite of all the brainwashing camps, Gothardism has not been successful in keeping second and third generation members in the fold, which is why his organizations are leaking money, perhaps because that total lifestyle is difficult to maintain over a long period of time.

The 2nd generation is hard because you need money to keep the organization afloat, and more importantly, growing. Think of the Duggars, beside JD, what skills, knowledge, experiences or money do any of the other second generation Duggars possess? How can they help support or grow Gothardism besides birthing an Army?

The 2nd generation Bateses do have more to offer.

Not allowing your adult kids to get educated or work, really puts an unfavorable wrinkle on things.

The Bates pray at the altar of Gothard.

The Duggars worship at the altar of Jim Bob.

I don't think I ever really would! Just a passing fancy. I'm too much of a loud mouth, in all honesty.

ETA: Also, cults are quite a monetary investment! I'm not about that. I've just always thought I have the right qualities (young, female, decent at pretending I agree with people about stuff to make it easy) to do it if I ever really wanted to.

Thanks. :) We've had people do shady stuff in the name of FJ before, so I just wanted to remind people about the guidelines.

No I got you, I definitely see why you felt the need to throw that out there just in case, but if I ever wanted to infiltrate a cult I probably wouldn't bandy about it on the internet first. I do think it would be super interesting, but I'm probably about as close to fundie culture as I ever want to get sitting here on my couch snarking with y'all about it!

Don't they sort of love the Duggars? Might have better luck with In Touch or the Inquisitor.
